  1. Only 6 more years? That’s one of the things that has me nervous about Kirby. We end up as the OJT, he wins something (an SEC), then Bama backs up a Brinks truck in front of his house when Saban retires.

    • Yeah but surely he’s seen what almost always happens when you follow a legend. You know what they say, you don’t want to be the guy that follows a legend, you want to be the guy that follows the guy that followed the legend.

Of course, we’re putting the cart pretty far ahead of the course, assuming Kirby will do so well at UGA that Bama will want him. 🙂

That should be the least of our concerns. If Kirby is so successful that Bama thinks he is the candidate worth that type of offer, then Kirby will have been considered a Grand Slam hire for UGA. As it stands, all we have is an unproven coordinator who, as you indicate, will be learning on the job. I would be ecstatic if we were concerned about Kirby replacing Saban in six years.

UGA is Kirby’s dream job. He’s not leaving for Bama, and if he’s got us rolling such that Bama would consider, there’d be no reason for him to leave.

      • I hope you are correct, RSC. I tend to think so as well, but Bama will spend $$$ that we won’t. The question will be whether they can use Benjamins to lure him if that day comes.

This we won’t spend money narrative doesn’t hold as much water as it once did. We greatly increased our spending this past year, including hiring much more in the support staff area, and Coach Smart negotiated the full support as part of his hiring.

          • That’s true, but I’m talking about Smart’s salary. If Bama offered him close to Saban/Miles money, I just don’t see us matching that.

We increased our spending, finally, up to that of an average SEC program. Do you see a fleet of athletic support staff being hired? I don’t. The IPF is still on the drawing board. Get back to me when ADGM actually starts cutting checks, building things, and hiring people. Lip service doesn’t get my motor running.

Similarly, IF Kirby gets our team winning championships then UGA will have the money to pay him $10mil if it’s needed to keep him home. From what we are led to believe about the state of the athletic dept. financials, f they had to they could double his salary right now and be fine.

          • I think it’s about principle. Yes, Il Duce isn’t around anymore, but I would think the faculty and staff at UGA would be in full rebellion if something like that happened (and, yes, I understand that most of Kirby’s salary is beyond what he will make as a state employee). Morehead would have to make the call on whether Saban/Miles/Calipari type of money is a place the institution is willing to go to pay its football coach.

Right. The Georgia Way isn’t dead. It isn’t even past. It MIGHT be modified.

These are conjured up scenarios that fit a narrative, nothing more, nothing less.

If Kirby is doing well enough to have UGA at a program where Bama is offering him Nick Saban money, then UGA isn’t going to let that go away, because that means UGA is enjoying all of the benefits Bama has enjoyed from the success Saban has brought them.

              • All I can is that I hope you’re right in that (1) Kirby has Georgia winning championships, (2) Bama decides because of his performance to make a play for him, and, most importantly, (3) the UGA administration makes the commitment for him to stay. I would rather just have #1 and #3, so we don’t have to worry about the suits in Athens having to make the decision on #2 under pressure from Jimmy Sexton.

Nice, this is better stated than I’ve seen in a while. When UGA board of regents folks sit back and dream, they imagine Alabama::Football, Georgia::Not Alabama. I believe the money would be there, so it could be done, not that they would.

    • Rugby, I’m not sure Dabo fits the bill for what the Bammers want. They want a Bryant, Stallings, Saban type of coach who is obsessive about nothing but Alabama football. I’m not sure Swinney fits that bill (and his teams haven’t consistently proven they’re physically and emotionally tough). I would be happy to see Swinney in T-town. I don’t think he’s a very good coach – he happens to have a really good QB right now that Chad Morris recruited before he left.

I wonder if you could present a point by point analysis of how the program is “falling apart?”

I suspect you couldn’t, and even if you tried, each point would be summarily refuted.

And, in the end, it would be obvious your “falling apart” assessment was nothing more than emotional overreaction born out of feelings that have nothing to do with the job Coach Smart is doing early in his tenure.

I just hope that CKS is successful enough over the next six years that Bama would want him. What are the odds that a new head coach with no head coaching experience make it six years in that first job?

Every time a coaching legend gets close to retirement age, think about how their recruiting drops off – Bowden, Spurrier, Beamer… Now Saban is different animal and I am sure somewhere in his ‘process’ bible their is a jedi mind trick just waiting for this scenario.
I agree with everyone and hope Kirby is so successful that those rednecks will want him back. My gut tells me that Kirby won’t leave if we are rolling. My wet Princess Leia dream is that Kirby curb stomps bama for mutliple sec championship games and Saban decides its time to hang up the process and Greene Co gets another multi-millionaire retiree.

  9. If we win out this year, I could see him heading back to the NFL. I don’t think he’s dying to leave or anything. I do, however, think some team will throw $10M at him and he still has that itch left to scratch (I guess).

Potential successors? Well, I think it depends on when. January ’16 or December ’16 or December ’21?

January ’16 – Kiffin, McElwain (though it doesn’t make sense), or Dabo
December ’16 – Kiffin, Smart or Dabo
    December ’21 – who knows?

In the long-term, I just don’t see Smart of McElwain leaving their respective schools. I guess I’m old school, but it just doesn’t make sense to me.

Have a good day and Merry Christmas,

I agree that Saban will probably leave Bama for another run at the NFL, and not retire at Bama. It is the only mountain he hasn’t proven he could climb and plant the flag, but the offer will not only have to be large but come with control of all football personnel decisions (drafts, trades, etc.) Some owners would never allow that but a few would to get the fan base excited and to turn around a stagnant franchise. Some incentives giving him a small piece of the ownership would be attractive to him as well.

I don’t know if it requires another Bama title, or not. If he doesn’t win the MNC again this year, he will have to put up with the portion of the fan base that wonders if he is still hungry enough and that will tick him off. I would bet he leaves Tuscaloosa with, or without, another title before he hangs up those coaching shoes with lifts.

      • Mac, I agree that it’s still the mountain Saban has yet to climb successfully. He barely left Base Camp the last time he tried it before he decided to head back down. The challenge he has is that the franchises that would give him everything he would want pretty much suck (and, generally, always have) or have dysfunctional ownership. While the potential for a Lombardi Trophy may be enticing, it would be an enormous risk for a guy who has built an enormous legacy (and ego) from his time at Alabama. Think about those franchises:
Miami – been there, done that, and couldn’t wait to get the hell out of there
TB – dysfunctional ownership and a small market for a big ego
JAX – terrible market for an NFL team (TB on steroids)
Washington – the most dysfunctional owner in American sports in Snyder
NYJ – if Saban doesn’t have time for the s___ at Bama, can you imagine him with the NY media?
Detroit – may be the place he could get what he wants
Cleveland – calling the Browns a dumpster fire is an insult to dumpster fires
Tennessee – another place that could be appealing (but also could be Miami 2.0)
St. Louis – Saban would love him some Todd Gurley
Oakland / LA – another place for a maybe but the LA media (see Jets, NY)
San Diego / LA – maybe but I don’t see Saban as a west coast guy

The three that could be intriguing:
Indy – his name has been linked multiple times with the Colts (he would have a QB)
New Orleans – Saban returns to Louisiana to finish his career after Sean Payton gets fired (who wouldn’t love to see the Corn Dogs wrap their brains around loving him, hating him, and loving him again?)
Atlanta – would Blank run Dan Quinn off if he knew he could get Saban to open his new building?

Daydream of the day…. Christmas, 2020….Get This Picture. “With two SEC championships, two playoff births and one national championship in his time at Georgia, Kirby Smart is the obvious choice to take Nick Saban’s place at the Capstone.”

“Some Alabama fans, however, are not sure. “Smart’s a good coach, but he’s only got one national championship,” said the ghost of Shorty Price, “I think Bama can do better than Kirby Smart.”
