Is the Gus Bus still under warranty?

This may be the most passive-aggressive vote of confidence I’ve ever seen an AD give his football coach.

I guess he could have said “had better” instead of “can”.

UPDATE:  If this is true, I’m not sure Malzahn’s getting the message.

Recycling Ted Roof?  Seriously?

Apropos that the guy tweeting this has a last name that sounds like ‘Creepy’. That’s Auburn all over…

  2. My God, what planet does this guy live on? We’re talking about Auburn, not Notre Dame or Alabama. The Plains spent an eternity going 6-6 and getting excited for their Music City Bowl match ups. Win a national title with a fair bit of luck and them folks in the Plains got all uppity and think they’re college football’s aristocrats.

Glass houses, man. They’re upset about a 6 win season, while we just fired a coach averaging 10 wins a season for his career, and before that coach got here Auburn owned the all time series against us by 5 games. They were the marginally superior program before Mark Richt, and there is little reason to think that won’t resume now that he’s gone.

I have the feeling I could be blogging five years into the career of Kirby Smart’s successor and half you guys would still be duking it out over Richt’s legacy.

If he had owned UF like he owned Auburn he would still be our HC.

There’s some real truth there; beating up on the program you know you’re better than is one thing. Not beating up on the program you were hired to beat up on is another thing entirely.

I wish we could just let Richt go, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

Net net… the regulars have slowed their posting down, which is a shame. On the other hand the irregulars have slowed their bitching down. Which is a relief. When we have a warm, wet winter the mosquitos come out heavy in the summer and fall. Disrupting your enjoyment of a good tailgate. Pests are pests. Wherever you find them.

So! The Senator doesn’t think Kirby’s going to last long…already planning on 5 years after he’s left!!!! AJC Headline coming soon (from the Senator’s pen pal Shultz of course), “Kirby predicted to be short-timer by UGA insiders”

I took it the other way.
After Smart’s career and retirement and into the 5th year of his replacement…

          • I’ll bet my beloved pet’s life, the Senator will hear about these comparisons for the rest of GTP existence. Some fans still compare the legacy of Dooley, Donnan and Goff, what more Richt, LOL.

I really am a bit sorry, Senator, but I continue to read your blog, and continue to get annoyed by comments that seem delusional. I’m a bad fan. If you want to IP ban me from commenting I would honestly not blame you one bit (and am happy to provide my home static IP).

Holy moly. In a rivalry that’s been going for over 120 years, five games is not that much. But I’m glad you think that Richt avenged us for all those losses in the 1910’s.

Sigh, my only point was that we have been historically comparable despite Richt owning them, and that it was difficult to manage surprise at Aurburn axing a 6 game winner after we just axed a consistant 10 game winner.

I hate Auburn, too, but come on. 6-6 can’t be acceptable there. With the commitment to football and all of the investment they put in it over there, 6-6 is a joke. And while we’re 8-2 over them in the last decade, let’s not forget that they’ve been where we want to go. We fired Mark Richt because he couldn’t do what Chizik and Malzahn have both done: at least play for the big one.

Roof’s 2010 defense was not elite but it was better than many considered it. They’re 4th Quarter stats were great, especially when you consider it was a hurry up offense that lived on big plays not giving the D rest. I’m a little surprised Auburn didn’t make a run at Pruitt,

That 2010 D was an OK rush defense and a great d-line. That was it. The secondary was a dumpster fire on par with Grantham’s 2013 D.

  4. I wouldn’t be surprised if Roof was still on the payroll, part of AU’s ‘coaching reserve bench’.

  5. It seems like the Auburn DC position is considered toxic in coaching circles. Nobody will take the job, despite it being the highest paid coordinator position in the country. Muschamp begged his way into the USCe HC position one year into his stint there. It’s like he knew if he stayed any longer the good feels would wear off and his career arc would nosedive on the Plain.

They aren’t loaded with elite players on D, they play opposite the hurry-up-and-punt offense that is entirely predicated on having the right QB for the system… which they apparently do not have, and the Auburn power brokers are notoriously impatient and short-sighted. Auburn’s DC’s from 2008-present:

    Paul Rhoads – 2008
    Ted Roof – 2009-2011
    Brian VanGorder – 2012
    Ellis Johnson – 2013-2014
    Will Muschamp – 2015
    ???? – 2016

Auburn’s conference defensive ranks from 2008-2015:
    Yards per game: 7th (317.8), 11th (374.4), 9th (368.4), 11th (408), 13th (420.5), 12th (420.7), 9th (398.8), 13th (421.8).
    Scoring: 4th (18.0), 12th (27.5), 8th (24.1), 11th (28.9), 10th (28.3), 9th (24.7), 10th (26.7), 11th (27.3)

Incidentally, the 2008 stats… by far the best defensive stats Auburn has had over the past eight seasons was the year before Gus Malzahn showed up as OC. As long as their philosophy is HUNH and as long as the Gus Bus is running, the defense at Auburn will be in the bottom tier of the SEC. It’s really not surprising they are considering recycling Roof, is it?

Absolutely right. If you are going to be a DC at the barn you need to have a really good conditioning program. That offensive scheme is either score quickly or turn the ball over or go 3 and out quickly. Regardless, the defense is going to be on the field A LOT. I am not a stats, but I bet the AU defensive stats in the second half is much worse than the first. They just get worn down.

Auburn is free to enjoy its heights, but I’m sure as heck going to enjoy its depths. Here’s to more 6-6s!
