From one of those interminable ESPN pieces that fill every off season:
To me, though, the issue of personnel takes a back seat to philosophy. Jim Chaney is a familiar name in the SEC, but what style will he utilize? He has been a guy who likes to run the ball with power at Arkansas, and he has been a guy who is willing to open up the passing game at spots such as Tennessee, where he produced a 3,600-yard passer in Tyler Bray.
I think that gets things exactly backwards. Chaney was hired because his offensive philosophy is flexible, based on the tools he has available. Personnel is very likely to drive his approach this season. If Nick Chubb makes it back, given the quarterback situation and Pittman’s remaking of the offensive line, it’s close to a lock that Chaney embraces the same power running game he directed at Arkansas.
But what should we expect if Chubb’s recovery is stunted and the offensive line can’t run block to save its life? Remember that while Jacob Eason is a true freshman, he cut his teeth running a four-wide, shotgun passing attack in high school. That, too, is an offensive approach with which Chaney has familiarity.
Just as important as the approach Chaney takes is the question of timing. When does Chaney make that call? How far can you go into the regular season and make an effective switch while trying to compete for a division title? Sure, some of that may be dictated by how well the defense and special teams play, but in any event, Chaney’s going to be faced with tougher questions than any other coach on Georgia’s staff this season.
Chaney is prepared to go Beyond Crompton if he has to.

It doesn’t matter which Jim Chaney we get. Since 2009 every iteration of his flexible offense with the exception of 2012 Tennessee has sucked.

Overall I think Chaney will be fine, but what I don’t really hear anyone discussing is that we are breaking in a whole new offensive system. Do we not expect some sort of learning curve with that?

I think perhaps everyone thinks a learning curve would be an improvement over last year.

I think 2012 was the last time he had a really good QB at his disposal. Bray was a beast that year…they lost games in 2012 where they put up 44, 31, 35, and 48 points.
I’m cautiously optimistic that Kirby can pick em.

It’s snark but based in truth. Cheney is getting credit for last year’s Arkansas offense, despite not running it. Hence, my snarky comment about why we hired him.

I think they’ll try to run it until other teams start stopping us, regardless of whether Nick’s all the way back or not. There’s depth behind Chubb. If that doesn’t work, it could get interesting. Or ugly.

My concerns about Cheney stem from our game against him in Fayetteville 2 years ago where Cheney did exactly the opposite. They were running it down our throats, tried to pass, ended up in 4th and 50 or so and the rout was on. Getting 25 in the the first 20 minutes and then shut out the rest of the way vs. us on 1/1/00 is a cautionary tale too.

As I recall, Arkansas made it a lot closer in the second half. I was glad when what was a rout finally ended.

It was 6-0 arky and they had first down at about our 40. At that point every play had been a run and they were getting 5 or so a clip. Then they tried to pass, ended up 4th and 50 and it was 38-6 at the half. Considering how much we struggled in close games and struggled even more coming from behind, that was just bad decision making on their part.

What?!?!?
We got a big lead on TO’s and they couldn’t stop us. Their offense made a gave out D all they could handle in the second half and made somewhat of a comeback.

(7:40 – 1st) Jonathan Williams run for 9 yds to the Geo 1
2nd and Goal at UGA 1
(7:09 – 1st) Alex Collins run for 1 yd for a TD, (John Henson BLOCKED)
That’s 13 plays: 12 rushes and 1 pass for an opening td. The next time they got it (after a failed onside kick- it was 7-6 not 0-6 my bad) they passed on the first play from our 45 and got sacked. Second down: sacked. Then they were done. With that field position and having run it down our throats on their first drive why throw?
That’s what.

He called one pass play that lead to a sack and that put them behind the chains. So, he called a pass play that didn’t work out and it killed a drive. Every OC has done that.
After that drive Arkansas’s defense and special teams imploded. We had 21 points off of turn overs at the half.
Once behind by multiple TDs the Razorbacks had to come out throwing.

I’m just debating the 1st and 10 call from our 45. I think that wasn’t very smart of them. I’ve also noticed that no one wants to deal with 0 points in the last 40 minutes vs. us with Drew Brees at QB. I tend to think that our new OC has been on the short end of the talent stick almost everywhere he’s been and that’s about to change. I also tend to think talent is a bigger factor in winning football games than coaching decisions are. In the end I’m sold on our new OC from the prospective of being adaptable to the roster, but I do have some “in game” decision making concerns though based on things that have happened when we’ve played the guy.

Are you serious? Because he called a pass play on our 45?!?! Let me help you out, NOONE is going have every play they call be a success.

Really? What a profound observation! I had no idea.
So you’re saying that play calling can’t fairly be analyzed based upon an “in game situation” but only upon the frequency upon which any play call works? All this time I thought that CMR blew it when he ran Sanks up the gut vs. Auburn with no timeouts in 2001. Hell, CMR thought he blew it. Shit, the whole world thought he blew it. If we only had your “not every play works” wisdom. This gives me a whole new outlook on this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmEMW0L6kfg
My whole life I thought that they should have just taken a knee, but now I know its just a play that didn’t happen to work. Seriously!

So you’re basing your concern on one play, and not how he used the TEs in the passing game to roast Pruitt’s secondary for the second half and make a blowout back into a competitive game?

Here it is again since you missed it. With 10 minutes to play in the first half of the 2000 outback bowl our oc had a 25-0 lead. Over the next 40 minutes plus a possession in OT he generated 0 points with a senior qb named Drew Brees.
So again yes you are right it’s one play call that I have a concern with. Just one. Seriously….

How can you not be excited about the hire of Chaney? (Or Tucker, for that matter, but we’re talking offense right now.)
Almost anyone would be better than Schottenheimer.
Chaney has a solid history, but Chaney and Pittman together have a really good history.
And while I don’t think this was a major consideration for CKS, as a fan, I don’t think either one has their sights set on being a head coach somewhere, so if they are as successful as Bobo, there’s a good chance we’ll get to keep them.
I was never hoping for the next hot thing to be OC for a couple of years, and then hit the road for a HC job. I want solid, fundamental coaches that can get the most out of the talent we have, make that talent as successful as possible, and do it for as long they can.
As the Senator said: “Personnel is very likely to drive his approach this season.” That is exactly what we didn’t have last year.

Cheney has a good rep as a QB coach. I can think of some QBs that could use a little coaching up, and then there’s that freshman. Smart said he wanted Cheney because the man had run many different types of offenses.
