I do not care how many championships we would win with him, I do not want Meyer anywhere near Athens, Georgia.

No surprise in any of that. You would think that a smart, accomplished coach like Meyer be able to ascertain how good of a player someone is without using his other offers as a crutch, or as a determination of whether he’s worth of a scholly offer…but obviously I’m mistaken. We’ve seen this in previous years with various 3 star, under the radar type athletes that we would offer, in which literally a day or two later other schools would suddenly jump all over as well with their own offers. AU and UT in particular would do this quite a bit.

While i agree that it calls into question the thoroughness of a school’s scouting efforts it’s just human nature being displayed. The ugly truth is that life is in many ways a popularity contest. As anyone who’s gone through a job search or bought/ sold a house (or business) can attest nothing increases desirability like multiple offers.

I certainly agree, however in this case you’re going from one extreme to the other (you suck/aren’t good enough to — hey, we’d love to have you on our team!). All of this based simply on what recent schollys they’ve received. Using your house example, that would be akin to viewing a home for sale, hating it, then hearing from the realtor that they have 2 offers on the table. So you decide, what the hell, and put a bid in as well.

With that said, you touching on corporate America is very true, as often the company you work for and/or title alone can make all the difference in the world. I’ve seen mediocre at best sales professionals from well known companies offered a position over a much better sales executive (who also interviewed far better to boot) from a lesser known firm. The general reasoning for this is basically, “well, he works at (fill in the blank of well respected company), so he just has to be better than the other guy.” Insane.

Oh i don’t disagree with anything you’ve said. Your first paragraph is what exactly why I’m scratching my head. If you’re Urban Meyer why are you going to be a prick to a kid you just offered. Either you want the guy or you don’t. Especially when there a million much more palatable excuses for why you offered him later than the other schools.

All he had to say was “We saw others were offering you, thought maybe we missed something before, took a second look. You’re great and we should have noticed earlier”–but that would have been acknowledging a mistake and I bet Urb is not the type who does that willingly.

Oscar Meyer is and always will be a prick. Biggest douche bag in the game. While I think Harbaugh is an assclown, I hope he and Dantonio beat his brains out forever!

Oh, I would like to see UM and OSU go 50/50 while Meyer and Harbaugh are there. Neither base would be happy and it just might knock each team out of national contention.

To be fair (far be it for me to want to defend Meyer), the vast majority of the best CFB coaches, historically or present, were total aholes. Even the guys you might think were good guys were total pricks behind the scene.

The surprising thing from that article is that Auburn doesn’t negatively recruit.

I respect what Urban has done on the field but I don’t like him too much otherwise…he can recruit like nobody else (he got Percy Harvin out of Virginia when the whole planet was after the kid)…one year when he beat the Dawgs in Jax, he gator chomped with the Florida fans in the stadium…that didn’t sit well with me even though he was playing to the Bull Gators…

IMHO, he could use a year or two of charm school to get some manners…

I never would have thought that the OSU/Michigan match up could out asshole the Woody Hayes/Bo Schembechler versions, but Jim and Urban are certainly trying.

For those of you too young to be familiar Woody ended his career punching a Clemson LB in the throat and physically attacking his own QB. This was after numerous tirades that Bob Knight probably found disproportionate. For his part Bo, during a commercial break prior to an OSU attempt at a winning FG, stood on the field at about the hash marks screaming at the OSU kicker calling him everything he could think of. Those two have always been a classy bunch.
