I don’t think that has anything to do with it. You can give to state schools as easily. The UGA Foundation counts on it. Paying coaches privately is a different ball of wax.
I will say this: UM surely needs an indoor facility as opposed to some schools, including UGA, that are just trying to keep up. Besides the heat and humidity, massive rains with lightning and high winds can occur in minutes without a lot of warning, and more or less on a weekly basis.

I would imagine that Nick’s approach is more popular among the coaching fraternity. I can only imagine what would happen if the press started confronting coaches about CMR’s donation. “Hey Urban, why don’t you buy OSU something nice like CMR did for Miami? And btw, you’ve made lot more than CMR, so what about 2 million?”

Can y’all point out the comments that you’re interpreting as being petty? The only one I see that can possibly be interpreted that way is the one by georgiasportsblog above. However, if you’re familiar with the movie A Christmas Story, you get the joke.
My personal interpretation is that some of y’all are so butthurt over Richt getting fired that it’s caused you to become hypersensitive regarding everything that is said about the guy. And this comment thread is a good example of that.

None have happened in this thread. You need to go back and read some of the old threads though if you want to know what we’re talking about. There are more than a few people that have explicitly stated that he didn’t earn any of his pay the last 10 years. LULZ at being “butthurt” over the firing. The proper term is being annoyed by segments of the fanbase that made it fucking miserable to be a Georgia fan for the last three seasons and still won’t let it go after the guy is gone.

The people who would defend Richt no matter what made it equally as miserable the last few years and many of them won’t let it go either. I’m glad most people have moved on.

As a guy that just wanted to talk about games and stuff and was pretty unattached to Richt’s fate one way or the other, I found the blind supporters to be much less insufferable than the people that turned every single conversation (at this here blog and others) over the last three seasons into a Richt-ferendum. There was one group of people that would inevitably devolve every blog topic into that by hammering you over the head with it and it wasn’t the blind supporters of Richt. YMMV, of course.

If nothing else, that will certainly endear him to the Miami faithful even more than his return home already has. Honeymoons end after the first loss regardless, but hopefully the good feelings will be strong enough to carry Richt through the next couple of years until he can build a winner down there. I wish him the best.

It seems to me that the one thing Richt learned from Pruitt is that you are far more powerful than you think.
If Richt had flirted with other schools in 2002 or 2005 or 2007, he could have gotten that damn IPF. He wasn’t a-hole enough to force the issue completely. A lesson hard learned most likely.
I truly do wish him the best. He’s going to be a better coach for all this, I have no doubt, but getting canned was necessary to stiffen his spine up.

No big deal, that’s only 1/4 of what he stole from Georgia by throwing the Florida game last year to make sure he got fired. I guess giving away some of his ill gotten gains helps with his feelings of guilt.

I fell for it hard for the first 7 or 8 years, 2008 opened my eyes. I don’t hate him but I don’t understand the love some folks have for him. He played a long con on Georgia fans and some still have stars in their eyes for him like battered housewives who can’t let go of the husband who beats the crap out of them.

Sorry, but I don’t buy the analogy. I agree that he let go of the reins there for awhile after van gorder, but I thought once willie was out that the ship really got righted on a lot of levels, and that but for horrendously bad luck that my mental state will not allow me to repeat, he’d still be here. In short, I agree that he let the thing go on auto-pilot as urban and nick took over. Then I thought he turned things around probably better than anybody we’ve ever seen. Usually once things go bad, they really go bad and you can’t get it back. He did.
I also think that whether it’s being totally uninterested in other jobs or the Paul Oliver network or the Devon gales situation, the guy represented the University of Georgia in a way that made me very proud as an alumnus. I wished that one day he’d win the big one here and we could say that, unlike some others, we really did it the right way.
How anybody could resent him or his tenure is just beyond me. That said, I’m looking forward to what’s next for us.

I’m optimistic about the future too. I really think his wife’s cancer changed him and I can’t blame him for that. My biggest issue is that he continued to take the millions after he stopped putting his heart and soul into the job. If he was a high school coach making $75,000 a year as a coach and history teacher and he wasn’t 100% focused and driven, I’d give him a pass. A man making multiple millions of dollars a year to coach a big time college football team needs to eat, sleep and breathe football and focus completely on winning at the highest level. When he made the comment that he took some time in the off season to “learn about football”, or something to that affect, I was dumbfounded. What was he being paid millions to be head football coach for if he needed to “learn about football”.

Continuing education is an important part of any field, especially something that changes as quickly as football. So while that may not have been the smartest sounding thing, it’s certainly not inaccurate or indicative of lack of knowledge.
I really have a problem with how you act like Richt just sat around smoking cigars from 2009-2015 and cashing checks from the university. Even if the results on the field weren’t what you (or I) wanted, it’s impossible to not acknowledge the fight Richt put up to turn things around. It wasn’t completely successful, but acting like you got robbed personally is disingenuous and honestly self-centered. The dude did his job. He didn’t do it well enough. So he got fired. He didn’t steal. He didn’t plunder the BM coffers. He was making far less than other (less successful) coaches in the conference. Grow up and quit acting like he stole your lunch money.

He has never been a money guy, as in leveraging a higher salary with offers to go to other schools. He never publicly bitched about it either. The fact that he is donating money to his current program should not surprise anyone who has followed his career. The bullshit put out by some of the posters above speaks volumes about their character. I have no doubts about Mark Richt’s character.

He’s also the winningest coach by percentage of any coach in UGA history, so to respect the guy’s accomplishments and character isn’t “blind hero worship.” I appreciate what he did for 15 years (by the way, no one keeps a high profile job like this if he/she isn’t good at it). Ray Goff was a good guy but a terrible football coach. Jim Donnan was a decent football coach but a public pain in the @$$. After Richt retires and comes back to Athens for a reunion of any of his teams, 90,000+ should give him the respect he’s due.
