Shorter Bret Bielema: of all the former assistant coaches who have worked for me, Jim Chaney and Sam Pittman are certainly two of them.

“And Georgia fans, don’t be turds. Enjoy this. Soak it up. It’s awesome. If you don’t win this year, it’s still not a failure. It’s a heck of a run. Back-to-back in the Playoff era hasn’t been done. So, to ask for a third I feel like it’s gluttonous. I feel like it’s not OK. But we’ll be in the mix.”-- David Pollack, On3.com, 5/9/23
There’s parts of me that want to be really optimistic about Chaney.
Then you read things like “When I interviewed those two guys, it was really a no-brainer to hire them,” said Smart, whose Alabama defense never allowed more than 13 points in six games against a Chaney offense.
Never scored more than 13 points against Bama in 6 games? I know Bama is Bama, but what exactly impressed Kirby so much? I hope Kirby is right, and Chaney wasn’t just a situation of “well, he was the best we could get at the time”.
I’m optimistic, but on a very reserved level.

Very reserved here as well.

At least Bert didn’t claim to teach them everything they know.

The fact it still sticks in Bielema’s craw gives me hope about the hires.

But he is supposed to be a genius.

Hiring Chaney was the key to getting Pittman — I thought we figured this out a while back.
