This is the second player Smart has had to dismiss since he arrived. The other was defensive lineman Chauncey Rivers, a rising sophomore whose dismissal was basically automatic (per UGA policy) after a third marijuana-related arrest.
This is also the seventh arrest of a Georgia player since Smart’s arrival, although in one case (Jonathan Ledbetter on alcohol-related charges) the charges have been dismissed.
I wish the season were starting tomorrow. But probably not as much as Kirby Smart does this morning.

D-1 College athletes get in trouble. To me, it’s all about how the school handles it and that’s where UGA continues to stand near the top. This ain’t Tuscaloosa or Urban’s Gainesville where there weren’t many consequences. While it’s probably a headache right now I imagine Kirby and staff are not naive and take it as part of the job. They seem have a plan to discipline and did the right thing. We all know there was a traffic violations under CMR every year. This staff pinpointed everyone without a License and addressed it. There’s probably a no-drive list and if you’re on it you better not drive unless you really like mornings with Coach Rocker.

Just so I’m straight on this…a kid called the cops because someone ganked his ear buds and the cops arrested someone over a pair of earbuds…he had to post $1500 bond and will now have to appear on charges…over a $30 pair of earbuds. So taxpayers are out probably in the range of $10,000+ in expenses once all is said and done, kid gets kicked out of school, and he’s out $$ for a defense attorney. And on top of that, you have morons who come onto this site talking about poorly educated, hip hop kids because a kid lifted a pair of earbuds.
The world has completely lost all common sense. As a taxpayer, I’m furious that this is the kind of petty garbage we are paying the police to do because they have zero common sense…and the worst part is that they will use the ‘stats’ to ask for more money the next year.

$10k in taxpayer money is a gross overestimation. The truth is that the city is likely to generate a profit here. Governments make a fortune off of petty crime. Between court costs, fines, probation/supervision fees, drug testing and deferred prosecution programs designed to “rehabilitate” the coffers of the government, crime is big business for local government. Serious crime is costly but necessary. Policing petty crime is a booming business.

Man. If stealing something worth 30 bucks is worth a $1500 bond and shooting a BB gun is a felony I guess I should have been in jail since I was nine. Not that I advocate stealing or have ever really done it but the value of the item should have an impact on the charges.

Spent 30 years in the Army. There is very little that is more disgusting than a barracks thief. He didn’t steal from a fellow player but he stole from a fellow student. Sorry, he needs to go and I could give a damn about the “value” of the item.

Unbelievably stupid on his part. It’s hard to believe he would have stolen something (and so trivial!) so soon after being arrested for the BB gun incident. I hope this will serve as a wake up call to him and get his life together. It’s a real mystery to me how a young man can have a chance to start for a program like Georgia and throw it away — and not because of drugs but because he’s just doing stupid childish stuff. Crazy.

Hate to see another kid throw away his opportunity but glad to see UGA addressing character issues and not hiding them. While neither of these offenses are of the dangerous/violent variety, two incidents within six months of being on campus puts Clay way off the radar. You really didn’t realize you were on probation and headed for a fall after your stupid actions a couple of months ago? Seems he was one of those “rules don’t apply” folks that needed (another) wake up call. Perhaps ending up at a lesser program will help put him on a better path.
Good on Smart for not allowing a distraction to continue at this point, and also good to make sure players understand while the sheriff may be new, their is still a sheriff in town.

Idiots like this are why programs need to over sign. A coach can count on losing two or three thugs every offseason to stupidity and arrest. The majority of players on football scholarships, if not for their ability to run fast, catch or throw a ball or tackle someone else with a ball would be nowhere near the University of Georgia campus. They would be qualified for positions in the construction, auto detailing and food service industries or they would be full time thieves or drug dealers.

Me too, actually about 13 if you count my Summer jobs. I’m saying they would not be students at Georgia with the opportunity to earn a college degree if they were not good athletes because their academic standing is not exactly top of the line and their career choices would be very limited.

I mean…come on…I had two friends in college who took someone’s credit card and charged a bunch of purchases at Structure and Britches Great Outdoors… On the other hand, there were plenty who engaged in certain petty thefts like collecting the place setting at Waffle House, filling two liters with Coca-Cola from the fountain dispenser in the dining hall, etc.
None of those things are ‘good’, but we are talking about earbuds that come free with the phone that can be replaced for $9 with better earbuds from Amazon. Who calls the cops over that? And what cop thinks the kid should be arrested instead of just being told…give him his earbuds back and don’t let it happen again.

Sounds like your friends with the credit card should have gone to prison. The dining hall coke was paid for as long as the students were on the meal plan so I don’t really consider that stealing. Stealing silverware from a restaurant is stealing, no matter how you try and spin it. How much do you have to steal before you are a thief? That is sort of like; how many lies do you have to tell before you are a liar?
As to the value, that really doesn’t matter. If they are so inconsequential, why didn’t he go buy his own and not steal someone else’s? We don’t know all the details on why the cops were called. Maybe he got caught and when he was confronted he thugged up and got belligerent and the other student had to call the cops?

Well that was fast. Arrived in January, gone in June. Maybe it’s just plain bad luck for the kid. Some people have a knack for getting caught – no matter how trivial. Not too late to sign on with Ga Military.
With our ‘2 strikes and you’re out’ policy, it’s a surprise attrition isn’t a heckuva lot worse. Glad Kirby pounds the recruiting and PWO pavement so hard. Getting the minimum 25 recruits a year seems like its never going to be enough to keep our roster full.

It teaches you not to be so stupid while breaking the football team rules like walking right by your HC at 5AM when he is out to get his Sunday morn AJC paper downtown early and you are just going to the dorm – or riding your bike over the top of Stegeman – or visiting the Army/Navy Goat Club Friday nite before the game. And legally steal some other guy’s babe.
