A case of mistaken identity?

I gotta tell you, this is one of the weirder Georgia recruiting stories I’ve seen lately.  The Dawgs just got a commitment out of Matt Landers, a lanky receiver out of Florida.  That’s not the weird part.  This is.

Landers is the son of the former UGA basketball player Tony Cole. Cole had some very bright moments on the hardwood during his three seasons in Athens.

“He said when he was there playing basketball he had a fun time going to school on that campus,” Landers said. “He said I will love it there.”

Landers has thought about wearing No. 1 or No. 21 at UGA. That would be his father’s old number from the hardwood.

“I’ve thought about that,” Landers said. “That would be cool.”

Please tell me there was more than one Georgia basketball player named Tony Cole.  Because if not, that means Landers is the son of this Tony Cole and I’m hardpressed to remember any bright moments on the hardwood for him.  (I also can’t imagine that Tony Cole telling his son he’d love it at Georgia.)

Then again, I don’t remember that Tony Cole being around for more than one season.  Anybody know the answer to this?

So is the kid expecting to use Kirby’s personal credit card after he enrolls?

Yeah, shocked to read that also. He had a troubled history there. Whatever happened to the rape allegations?? History below:

One of the greatest signs ever to appear on a CBS Sports telecast:

I was working at Steverino’s at the time, we changed our signboard to ‘TONY COLE NEVER ATE HERE.’ I think it made the cover of the Flagpole.

Steverino’s is my all-time favorite sub shop! When I was at UGA in the mid-1980’s I would order deliveries like crazy from there and Sons of Italy. Really miss Stevos – when did it go out of business?

It was certainly there through the 90’s and into the early 00’s.

I spent many warm afternoons on the deck at “steve’s and son’s”. You bought the big cup for $5.00 (I think) and refills of draft were $2.00 each (again, memory?).

I don’t think it went out of business so much as the owner got tired of running a restaurant… but, yeah, for a while there that marinated steak and cheese was the best sandwich going for us idiots on a shoestring budget.

Wonder if anyone told him that number 21 is retired.

  6. His mother, I think, is Jan Kemp. She praised the academics at uga and was seen on campus last week wearing a “Kirby Empire” shirt.

  7. Hey, Landers could wear 21 to honor Sean Taylor! He is from the state of Florida and Taylor was the best football player I’d ever seen. My heart still hurts a little every time I hear his story. Just my .02…and GO DAWGS!!!

Whew. I was thinking the same thing, Senator. I do remember Tony Mack – he was a beast. I even seem to remember them talking about him trying out as a safety on the football team.

  9. Stories like this always make me wonder what % of news and information I get from the media is this stunningly wrong. How can any of us make informed decisions if we are starting off with misinformation. to quote “The Big Short”,
“It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.”
One more of a thousand different cuts killing the AJC and newspapers in general..
Get this kid in the weight room ….I always liked b-ball players at wide receiver , when in doubt throw it up high and let’em go get the rebound

There is a lot of wisdom in The Big Short. Everyone should read it.

Media companies (including book publishers, not just newspapers) have cut most copy editing and fact checking positions. I believe the AJC did so before most other major dailies (or maybe the copy editors and fact checkers it used to have were singularly bad at their jobs). In any case, it hasn’t been a positive development. It’s bad enough to read poorly expressed ideas and it’s even worse if they contain glaring grammatical, stylistic, and factual errors.

Hey, let’s have a thread about those nasty liberals blackballing Hershel for endorsing Herr Stump.

I hadn’t heard about that, but I was waiting for it. At least Herschel has some relationship to the man. All I can ascribe Vince’s endorsement to is senility, willful ignorance, or a mix of both. Bless Vince’s heart. Senile, ignorant and married to that woman is a pretty undignified way to go out.

I knew it had to be a typo when it said “he had a fun time going to school on that campus.” I don’t think Tony Cole went to school.

Other than for basketball, the only time he would appear on campus was to pick up his paycheck from the Herrick gang.

  12. Please… Let’s just all step back and stop hurling the invective! Cole was here! Harrick was here! Hillary wasan’t here, but will swear she was for your vote! Tony Cole, may or may not have been here! Whether he wears #1 or #21, he is interested in being a Dawg baller(football or basketball, do we ,really want to drag his father’s name thru the red clay so the prospect can see it? Let’s start thinking w/our human brains and stop using our Dawg brains on this one! And we wonder why we are losing in state recruits! All people like Mickey Conn has to do ,is read this Blog for highly motivated recruits who would love to kick our asses! That’s right , its all history!!! The kids don’t know it, and if we don’t open ouir mouths, sometimes they won’t My hat is off to Tony Cole for his initial comments!
