A short history of Jay Jacobs and Auburn’s head coaches

Per Jon Solomon:

There are votes of confidence worth taking to heart. And then there are votes of confidence from Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs, who this offseason gave Malzahn high praise and a one-year contract extension through 2020. Consider Jacobs’ track record.

“I don’t see anything changing. I’m looking forward to Tommy [Tuberville] being the coach at Auburn for a long, long time.” — Jacobs in November 2007, one year before Tuberville was forced out

“We will continue to provide Coach (Gene) Chizik and our football program the resources needed to build a strong foundation so that we can consistently compete for championships in the future. We look forward to Coach Chizik being our coach at Auburn for a long, long time.” — Jacobs in June 2011, one year before Chizik was fired

“[Gus Malzahn’s] our coach. He’s a brilliant offensive mind, took us to two national championships: once as a coordinator, once as a head coach. There’s a bunch of schools in this league that would love to be in our position with a guy like him.” — Jacobs in June 2016

If patience is a virtue, then Jay Jacobs is that gold-digger you heard about who’s on her third husband for the money and doesn’t really care what’s in the prenup.

Best thing Gus has going for him right now is that Bobby Lowder’s been forced out of the picture.

If Auburn comes out of September 2-2 with an ugly loss to either Clemson or LSU, knives will begin to be sharpened.

And the private jet will be dispatched in the dark of night to . . . Louisville?

If they don’t hire Briles and whoever handles title 9 compliance for ut I will be disappointed. Mike Price should be hired as Player Development Manager.

Auburn’s pattern is to do much better when not much is expected of them. They seem to be particularly good the year AFTER they get hype and fall flat. Without going back to look, I want to say that Coach Richt’s teams only got embarrassed by Auburn one time and they were obviously 10-5 against Auburn overall. I really hope that Coach Smart can keep the momentum going in the Auburn series, because it’s one of the two that mean the most to me. Playing them this season with a new coaching staff and Malzahn’s back against the wall makes me nervous.

  5. There are now more bagmen in Aubum than ever.

Malzahn clearly has at least one more year in him – no “long, long time” endorsement yet from Jacobs

I wouldn’t be so sure and think the runway is much shorter. If he doesn’t meet or exceed expectations in 2016, I think they’ll have a new HC in 2017 especially if they lose to UGA and Bama. The fact they restructured Gus’s contract to give him an additional year, but NO additional money is very unusual and I can’t recall the last time that happened. It allows him to tell recruits that he’s signed thru 2021, but didn’t pay him anymore $$$. The previous coaching buyouts either have or will end shortly, so they’ll be flush with cash again.

    “Jay Jacobs is that gold-digger”

Because it’s got a good beat and he can dance to it
