QB foreshadowing?

This does not sound like a ringing endorsement of Eason’s chances to start.

Then again, it may not mean a damn thing.

No it doesn’t but it does show that he is not sacrificing a season.

More interesting, Smart made a possible Freudian slip when talking about UNC, something to the effect of “we’ll both be starting new quarterbacks.” He didn’t say new offenses. Hard to interpret that other than a slip of the lip about his intentions. Some close to the team say Eason’s already the guy. Who knows?

I bet he spent many an hour coming up with lines to send us fans into confusion, i know i would.

  3. Even if he’s made up his mind that Eason will start ( and I doubt he has), the last thing he wants to do is send a message to freshman QB that he doesn’t have to keep working hard.

    • How does “the best player will start” send a message that the QB doesn’t have to keep working hard?

Honestly, if that message hasn’t already gotten across to all three of them, Kirby’s worse at coaching than we think.

Agreed, Smart seems to want to push every player to earn every snap. Obviously QB is a little less fluid than some other positions but the concept is there. You wouldn’t want to announce a starter for a multitude of reasons. Beside you never know how a QB will react until the game. It would not surprise me to see multiple QBs play in the first few games.

Consider a scenario (probably not factual) where Eason believes that he has thrown the ball substantially better in practice and scrimmages than the other QBs. But he is a little more limited in terms of managing the game, giving good handoffs/ball fakes, and understanding the strategy. This would be a clear statement to Eason that he needs to concentrate on the little things or risk losing the job to a better game manager.

As I said, probably not factual, but it’s colorable and exciting.

On the flipside (also probably not factual), maybe the offense has looked awful and none of the QBs are doing well. Eason may not even be the best of the bad, but CKS doesn’t think the team can hang in the big games without a field stretching/high variance player. That’s depressing.

As a third option, CKS is simply engaging in coach speak. This is not an attempt to send a message to a player or expound on an important strategic decision. He is just filling up interview time with meaningless words so the media can’t ask him more questions he doesn’t want to answer.

Which one of these three sounds most like the Process (RT) to you?

I’m betting this is somewhere between “doesn’t mean a damn thing” and “keeping his freshman hotshot QB grounded” – probably closer to the former.

The objective is to win. There is no style points rating on the scoreboard. Therefore, isn’t the best player always the player who gives us the best chance to win?
Message to me is, “I measure QBs by the offense’s production, not by how far a guy can fling it.”

His comments are no big deal.

As much of a point you have on there being style points, which there are in terms of a tenured Coach keeping hid job or possibly making a playoff. 1st game for a new coach, multiple injuries/suspensions against a ACC division winner, a W is a W.

It won’t matter if the winning point comes from the UNC punter letting the ball go over his head or the UGA punter running for a 1st down from deep in his own territory on a read rather than a call from the coaches.

In my mind the “best player that gives us a chance to win” is the best player. Especially when the skill sets among a group of players is not that close

Don’t like it. Just answer by saying the mundane – something like ‘the players are competing for playing time every day’.

Maybe if he said, “most talented player” instead of “best player”, it would be less remarkable.

I read it as simple hedging. He knows the fans and media are all on the Eason hype train, and if I were him I’d want to mitigate the inevitable backlash that will come if Lambert ends up being the starter week 1.

I don’t think Cleveland played it most talented qb last year for a variety of obvious reasons. If we’re playing just the most talented guy, there’s no competition. That was the mistake Donnan made with Quincy. He was too enamored with his talents w/o recognizing that that’s just one, albeit significant, piece.

Donna was trying to keep QC away from those long clean chalk sidelines. Better to have him near the scrum where it’s all obscured.

  16. Mr. Kirby is just having fun keeping media and fans with a heightened interest on the QB question. Nothing like having UGA in the headlines and talking heads on those shows. Good for recruiting.

    • Fromm looked really good at The Opening in the 7 on 7 (by the way, so did Davis Mills). Both of them have really good arms. I’ve seen a lot of Mills (kids go to GAC) but little of Fromm. Jake definitely surprised me with how good he looked. While Lawrence is important, I’m not sure he’s as vital as I thought. The position will be in good hands with Fromm.

Goodness this is going to be a long preseason. Can we just accept the old story of the 300 lb gorilla playing golf, he could drive the ball 400 yards but when he putted he putted 400 yards. Kirby seems to be saying that the starting QB has to be the one that knows what to do and when to do it. We know Lambert’s faults, because we have seen him under fire. Likewise we know that Ramsey is capable of being a hot mess as far as turnovers are concerned. We know what about Eason? He can really spin it. He looked good in the G-Day game against our 2nd and 3rd team defense. Well guess what, he still has to demonstrate to the coaches that he knows what plays to check off to, when to just throw it away, and when to eat it. I thought the SEC channel guy McElroy said it best about the G-Day game and Eason’s performance. He had his team down close 3 times and scored once. The other 2 times he held on to the ball and got sacked taking the team out of FG range. Love him or hate him Richt always said sometimes the best thing to do is throw the ball into the stands.

Kirby knows better than any of us that he has zero excuses with this team. If he starts Eason and Eason handles it well then he wins, whether the team does or not. If he starts Lambert the fans are going to be pissed win or lose. If he starts Ramsey he might at least not have everybody pissed. That’s why he makes the big bucks.

  19. Kirby made it clear that he is coaching to win now and not when he has the team he wants. He isn’t talking about taking a step back to take a two steps forward. To me, that means either #11 or #12 will take the 1st snap in the Dome. While #10 may throw the best ball, he doesn’t seem to have the full grasp of the offense. The game after we lose a 2nd conference game is the time to build for the future … that’s when Eason starts and not a moment before unless he beats the other 2 out.

First, I think we should have choices here as to who will start. Poll the readership now and just before game day. That would be interesting since I’m curious as to who is pragmatic about this and who is picking a horse early without consideration of what the coach will consider; then there’s the W-A-Guessers.

Will green-horn talent win the day? Or will the most experienced QB with 10 wins last year and who best adjusts for field situations and who can get each player into the correct position (if need be) be chosen? Or will our annual Roller-Coaster Kid take over? Stay tuned for the all-important pick of our QB, warts and all, chosen to start the NC Game. Will he let this audience decide among themselves whether some know the minds of our coaches or will they go down in ignominious defeat by changing their picks or by letting it ride? Stay tuned or untuned as the case may be.

      • I’m a W-A-Guesser, but I think at the end of the day, it’s going to be Lambert. Whether he can keep the job throughout the season is a completely different question. I think Ramsey is just as talented as Eason. If he decides to get his head in the game, he could be the wild card in all of this.

I assume that Smart and Chaney will factor August practice performance into the “who starts September 3rd” equation. If so, none of the 3 scholarshipped QBs have played themselves out of the running for the starting job.

I find it hard to believe that Smart has decided to start Lambert and that decision is so fixed that it would not be affected by the August practice evidence.

Sometimes, you start a catcher behind the plate who is good at working with a specific pitcher even though he’s a uniformly worse player in every other way than the regular catcher. I think Smart is saying here that we want someone who will manage the clock, hand the ball off cleanly, run snap count cleanly, avoid taking very stupid sacks, etc. and that may or may not be the same guy who can hit a target in stride downfield. This goes double if Chubb is healthy and we feel we can win by running 70% of the time.

Who knows? In a radio interview he said something to the affect that UNC and UGA will both be starting new QBs. He may have meant to say could, but he didn’t.
