Black is back?

Just putting this out there.

I have to admit it’s interesting they’re using the black jerseys as a recruiting tool.

Seeing it in the new Jersey style seems to confirm it. I wonder if they’re going to wear these in the opener at the Dome instead of some crazy pro combat uni like 2011?

    • They’ve been making them for sale since the font change over. These pictures indicate that they’re coming back on the field. I would love for us to blackout the Dome. The last time we blacked out an indoor stadium we crushed Hawaii.

Last year’s team had the same jerseys, they just never wore them.

I’m not sure about that. Kirby had recruits wearing the old style Jersey in black.. the kind without the new number font and without the wider collar. No one said so, but it seemed like those were from farther back. Why wouldn’t he put them in the newer design? This was the first time we’ve seen that new design in black. Not saying you’re wrong, but what we’ve seen seems to point to the fact that these are new for this season.

I saw them with my own eyes, at Butts-Mehre (long story).

I’m not sure what happened to them — maybe Schottenheimer stole them; maybe Pruitt burned them in front of the team, decrying the notion of “fake juice” — but the team did have them, with the new font, at the beginning of the 2015 season.

          • I thought we were going to see them against Kentucky when they asked everyone to wear black. At that point, the Richt haters would have called wearing the black jersey desperation. I think the staff probably vetoed the decision.

Somewhere on Twitter this week I saw a post that UNC received their Kick-Off Classic patches and showed them sewn on their jerseys, which were the “home” powder blue. I would imagine, then, that we are the “away” team and have to wear white (unless there was some agreement that both teams could wear home jerseys, as happens sometimes, since the colors would be pretty distinctive if we wore black).

Huh. I was thinking the opposite. As much as I love the silver britches and red hats, I think the black jersey (as much as I tend to like it) is too overpowering of those other colors. That may be because I’m just not used to it, though.

I just don’t want the all black look. Having the red and silver in there still makes us look like UGA. I went to the Senior Gala in 2007 and Kiante Tripp was at our table. The players, at the time were pushing for all black. After seeing the black pants, white jersey and black helmets combo against Florida a couple of years later.. it just didn’t look like UGA to me… and I think the critical part to me is you’ve gotta have something noticeably red in there (not just the accents), But that’s just my two cents.

I concur 100% about the all black, but feel just as strongly against the all red. I don’t like any teams with a mono chromatic uni, except those teams with an all white (OU, Texas, Bama, etc.). I love the black jerseys with the red helmets and silver britches, but would limit them to once a year. Black is a primary color for UGA, nothing fake about it. I agree with the love for our “usual” red jersey uniform, and that is why I would like to keep it as our traditional “home” look for a high percentage of the time.

Never understood the outcry against them, or our abandoning them since 2008. I would prefer we just wear them occasionally and not attempt to color coordinate with the fans, just don’t make them something special and get the fake juice rep. ND does something similar and doesn’t get the “fake” label. Damned good look for us, and the players seem to want it also. I would prefer we just have one “alternate”uniform, and this would be my vote for the one to use.

I agree.. I like the black jersey a lot and thought they should have done something to remove the stigma. Jersey color has nothing to do with why we lost to Alabama. The hype machine that was behind it had a role in the team’s psyche but it also wasn’t THE reason we got beat. I don’t want all red either. I thought we looked like NC state or something in 2011.

All red, orange, blue, green, gold, maroon, etc,, look like softball uniforms from the 70s. All things being equal, a game I am watching and don’t have vested interest in who wins, I pull against the team in the monochromatic uni for hurting my eyes.

The bigger problem with mo on the 2008 Bama game was the announcement of it early in the week, and asking fans to wear black to show unity. We need to wear some specific color to be unified? All it did was give Alabama a chance to hype their players to spoil our fashion show, and hav our team thinking about their threads and not their assignment. Use the black jersey often enough to not make it such a big deal, and don’t tell the fans a damn thing about it. One thing about, we will win best dressed becasue I haven’t seen a college uniformlook any better than that. I almost like the Falcons when they wear the black jersey now, doesn’t look as good as UGA wearing them but it looks pretty good.

You’re 100% correct mac. Remember reading how Bamas S&C coach was telling all their players we were wearing black, and we were disrespecting them by doing so. They used it to their advantage and hyped them up with the phrase” UGAs wearing black to their on funeral “. So if Kirby is going to do it. DON;T TELL A FUCKING SOUL ABOUT IT. Till right before kickoff.

They really do. And I’m not saying some other combination couldn’t work.. but I just want us to still be recognizable as Georgia, and once you get away from having Red helmets, it really does start to change how we look. Black helmets and red jerseys might work.. but All red or all black would not.

      (1) It IS one of our school colors.
      (2) Nike doesn’t “force” any team to wear anything. They don’t dictate to head coaches, equipment managers, etc., what their teams will wear. They make things available, they make offers, and it is at each team’s discretion whether they accept those offers or not.

Why else would UNC, Duke, Florida and FSU put black into their color scheme unless Nike was twisting their arm to market yet another jersey? My point is why shouldn’t we wear black occasionally since it is one of our colors, just don’t make it such a focus that we make fools of ourselves. I’m sorry I was too brief to make myself clear.

Cool. I agree that we shouldn’t make it such a focus. That’s half of the reason why I think we should wear it more often…so that it is just a regular part of our uniform and not a “special occasion”.

The other half of why I think we should wear it more often is b/c it just looks good.

But absolutely, it can’t be fake juice at this point and I think he’s aware of that. But it’s already public… there are pictures of recruits wearing those Jerseys out there so he’s not keeping it under wraps.

Funny, Kirby was in the stadium for our last night game with black jerseys, only he was in the opposing locker room reveling with his team in how they beat the shit out of that voodoo-fucking-black jersey-everyone-was-wearing gimmick and that it was done by halftime.

The jerseys are especially dressy with the bright top-cherry red looking helmet in relief, but the memories crash into it and not in a good way. Healing from this malady will improve rapidly if they don the black jersey-with-the-cherry-on-top look and proceeded to kick the hell out of someone important enough to get excited about our new look and team. We can try to get excited about the Coach later.

There’s a great deal of mis-info and mis-remembering when it came to unis, and I’m a bit of a uni nerd, so I’ll throw it out there.

-the 1942 National champs had black jerseys, but never wore them in a game according to records. Sinkwich’s Heisman portrait is in the black jersey and he was also on the cover of a sports magazine.
-During that same era, with Trippi, we wore white jerseys with red numbers in the Oil Bowl.
    -Silver hats and britches.
-Dooley ditched the silver britches in 1964 and introduced the red helmet.
-The ’78 Wonder Dogs were prone to wear red pants on the road.
-Dooley brought back the silver britches, adding the now iconic asymmetrical stripe in 1980. The rest is history. Dooley wanted to intro them at home, so they wore the red pants in Knoxville to open the season. It was the only time Herschel wore anything other than silver britches.
-In ’85, the team went back to red pants periodically, wearing them at Clemson and even in the Sun Bowl vs. Arizona.
-In ’87, we lost at Clemson in the red pants and Dooley ditched them. The were same ones we had worn since ’78.
-In ’88, we got new red pants to more closely match the silver britches, shiny fabric, G on left hip, and thicker black stripes. We wore them in Starkville, but lost in Columbia in them. Dooley shipped them to Lincoln County.
-Goff was very hesitant to change unis. In the ’91 Indy Bow, we added a black stripe, black facemask and had red number outlines on our white jerseys. The number outlines stuck around the next year and remain.
-Donnan added the black stripe from the Indy Bowl as a permanent look. We also added drop shadows to the numbers in ’96 with Donnan.
-Donnan brought in black pants for the 1998 Outback Bowl (’97 season) vs. Wisconsin with white jerseys. It looked pretty awesome.
-We wore the black pants with red jerseys in Jacksonville in ’98 and looked like a rec team.
-In ’99, we added solid white pants with no stripe and a G on the hip. We wore them at home vs. LSU and on the road at UT. I thought they looked sharp with the white jerseys. We wore them again in the infamous loss at home to Tech in 2000.
-Richt brought the white stripe back to the helmet. After Richt’s first year, we dropped the shadow and went back to an outline, but we moved the numbers to the shoulders, which was a weird look for a few years. We’ve always had numbers on the sleeve vs. the shoulder like some other teams.
-In 2005, we introduced a new jersey style that moved the numbers back to the sleeve and added a black collar to the red jersey. Personally, still not a fan of the black collar.
-2007 saw black jerseys vs. Auburn and Hawaii.
-2008 saw black jerseys vs. Bama.
-2009 saw the atrocious black helmets and pants vs. UF. The pants were so uncreative. They had the same stripe as the silver britches, red-white-black, so you could only see the red and white which was odd looking. red-white-red with a matching stripe on the helmet and a white or black facemask would have made that uni look much better and a little more like UGA.
-That soiled Richt for a few years. We wore the power ranger unis in the 2011 kickoff vs. Boise. It’s a shame we lost, because I was hoping to see those pants w/ the normal road unis at least once.

That’s more than you wanted to know, but it’s really not that many variations over the years. Much less than a South Carolina and even Florida. Much more than an Alabama or Texas. The last 3 experiences vs. Bama, Florida and Boise is probably what has left a bad taste in our mouths.

Thanks sUGArdaddy. Excellent post. I am usually a traditionalist when it comes to CFB, uniforms and such, but have come to believe nothing wrong with being flexible. If different unis will help with recruiting the 4 and 5 stars I’m ok with it. Oregon is seen as being in touch with the HS kids and have been very successful. Unis not the only reason but is a factor. I suspect CKS will look at some changes and I’m ok with it. Don’t think jersey color has anything to do with wins or losses.
Just win baby, and look good doing it, even if the win is so-called “ugly.”

The players and recruits dig uni changes these days. The added flare from time to time is not altogether awful. I would like to see one game a season with the black jersey, red helmet and silver pants and one road game a season with red pants, white jersey and red helmet. Let the seniors and/or coaches decide prior to the season which games it will be and announce it to the fans. Players will dig it, the university can sell additional red or black gear for the selected games and it will be a win win.

Why wouldn’t you want to use the home combo away? Didn’t Dooley help change that rule about away color choice for LSU and didn’t the SEC adopt it as well? I know LSU honored Dooley for that some years ago at halftime when we played at LSU.

While your #3, all white with red helmet would probably look pretty sharp (with white shoes and red accents), there are too many teams already sporting a good looking all white look.
