In case you were wondering how it was going in the Big 12 after the scandals at Baylor, here’s this thought from Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby at Big 12 media days:
… But let it suffice to say as it pertains to all of our institutions, we are very committed as a group of ten schools to eradicating sexual assault on our campuses. It almost goes without saying that when you combine alcohol and drugs and raging hormones and the experiences of 18-22 years old, it’s probably unrealistic to think that these kinds of things are never going to happen.
All that’s missing is sincere advice to victims everywhere to lie back and enjoy it if it should happen.
Raging hormones lead to rape? It’s rather staggering to hear someone say this. And in any event, it isn’t alcohol that causes sexual assault; it’s the one doing the assaulting who causes that.
So, yeah, this is sad and even a bit revolting. And if Bowlsby’s a dumbass for saying it, what do we call the school presidents who think he’s doing a bang up job as Big 12 commissioner?

Senator, this is just a typical response for this day and time. Individual responsibility is dead or dying in all phases of our Republic. It can’t be helped because, 1 he was drunk, 2 raging hormones, 3 too young to control himself etc. Carried to this logical conclusion we all should just use the old “the Devil made me do it” defense.
The justice system in this country has created this monster by the unequal application of “Justice”. People bitch that the Congress has exempted themselves from laws they pass for the masses. As a retired lawyer, I feel that the Supreme Court could have and should have held that any law that has an exemption for the Congress is Unconstitutional on it’s face under the Equal Protection Clause. The Supreme’s let it happened and we will never put that genie back in the bottle. The idea that we are a country of laws and not of men is now just a joke. Money not truth will set you free.

69Dawg, I agree with you that individual responsibility is dying out but I think there are more reasons than just the one you give. The sort of excuse given here is one I would expect to hear from a parent when their child does something wrong. It’s the willingness to excuse such behavior in people important to us because we want to hold onto the view that they are flawless. We want to spare them and us the shame of admitting to wrongdoing and character flaws. Carrying out justice equally for everyone is certainly a good thing, but the people in general have to become less hypocritical and condemn wrong acts regardless of who commits them.

I hate to be the guy to defend him but I think you are overly critical. All I see that he said was when you combine drugs, alcohol, and young kids (with hormones) then sexual assaults are inevitable. I think this is true no matter what precautionary measures are in place. I don’t have any idea what he has done to “eradicate sexual assault”…

Some people are bent that way and don’t need any assistance. It’s incumbent upon schools to recognize that.

“According to Baylor investigatory documents, a police report, and multiple interviews conducted by Outside the Lines, several students gathered at Baylor player Oakman’s apartment and began drinking vodka. Some smoked marijuana.
The alleged victim said the last thing she remembers is hanging out in a bedroom with a few other people at Oakman’s apartment.”
I don’t know if everyone was under the influence but I will bet drugs and alcohol were involved in almost every incident at Baylor. I am sure I could find all kinds of studies and police records showing that drugs and alcohol are big factors in sexual assault cases.

I have been drunk many more times than any of the people at Baylor (being much older, for one). I have never committed sexual assault nor violence against a woman (barely any against a man and I’ve never started a fight).

Sorry — I have to disagree with you here. Those combinations should not open the door to sexual violence of women. It is a violent act, period.
There is just as much drugs, alcohol and hormones compared to when I was in school. But these heinous acts occurred less frequently statistically. It has to do with culture, parenting and the influence of emotional instant communications on young people.

Perhaps these incidents were under reported when you were in school. I am 15 years removed from college and I don’t remember any big incidents at my school but I am sure they happened.

I concur that drugs and alcohol impair judgement and contribute to bad/horrible decisions and actions, but the raging hormones is a silly excuse to me. I am sure my hormones were as dumb as any in my 14-25 age frame, but rape is not sex driven, it is a power thing. As much as I have lusted after what I could not have, at no time, zero, did the idea of penetrating a woman who was passed out, resisting, or calling for help have any appeal to me. Who would have that as an idea of good sex? How satisfying is that to your lustful fantasy? It only screams LOSER to me. Find something else driving that urge. Looking at pictures in magazines would be far more satisfying than an experience like that, and not make you feel so bad afterwards, much less cost you years of your life…or worse.

Honest truth. When I got my hands on a Playboy way back when, the first place I turned was to the Centerfold. Nude pictures of someone I will never have sex with is a turnoff to me and I went to the centerfold for the great jokes on the back of the nude. Do they continue to print their jokes there?

Bluto, there are a great number of individuals like Bob who really don’t get it because they have always thought of the legalities first and how to make sure those legalities don’t impact their lives. They refuse to put themselves in a female’s place to experience the horror this must place into the lives of otherwise normal people when raped. Their insensitivity arises from CYA before human decency.
And I have news for the anti-pot people and that is that pot smoking is more liable to produce limpdick-syndrome before ever doing anything to up your hormone level. Yeah, it will break down your inhibitions and hers also, but it doesn’t enhance the hormone level for either and ends up in a struggle to put a wet noodle up a drunk wildcat’s butt. It ain’t conducive to sexual performance enhancement. I use pot to help me sleep – and to try and shock my UGA compatriot’s sensitivities to it’s usage.
