In a little bit of a surprise, Nick Chubb met with the media yesterday.
Then again, at this point, I’m not sure anything Chubb does should come as a surprise. And I don’t think it’s unrealistic at all now to be optimistic about Chubb’s chances to contribute in the opener, as it’s hard for me to think Kirby Smart would let him interview if it were still a very unlikely possibility.
To watch Chubb on Georgia’s practice field is to say the qualifiers “maybe” and “hopefully” can be removed. Beating all reasonable expectations set last October, when Chubb suffered the gruesome knee injury, he’s been running, cutting and carrying the ball without limitation this week at Georgia’s practices.
The only thing he hasn’t done is absorb hits. That’s the next, and potentially final, test. But Chubb’s availability for the season opener against North Carolina – once considered a long-shot – is now approaching a certainty.
“I am who I am,” Chubb said after Wednesday’s practice. “I feel good. I have my teammates with me. So just emotionally and mentally the support is there. I feel good.”
Chubb admitted that some of the things he’s been able to do – squatting and running, for instance – have surprised him.
“But I’m doing everything I used to do,” Chubb said.
Emerson goes on to say that Chubb starting against North Carolina is “an increasingly likely scenario”. If so, what a story. And I can only imagine the crowd reaction in the Dome if that turns out to be the case.

Dawg bless young Mr. Chubb. He seems like a great kid, and we know he’s a great player. I hope his recovery is complete, and that his season is first and foremost a healthy one!

Defensive meeting room…..
Um coach is Chubb really ready for full contact? Doesnt he need a couple more months? I mean there is no need to try and tackle him to the ground, right? We can just go thud with him, right? Shouldn’t we all have no contact jerseys if Chubb is good to go? What about our health?

I know I will be watching that game cringing every time he gets tackled low or looks at all awkward going down. Really pulling for that kid, I can only imagine how much work he’s put in to get to this point.

My thoughts exactly. As if I’m not emotionally invested in a game enough, now I’ll be worried every time he gets touched. If he could just break loose on wide toss sweeps all season, that would be great!

While I’m going to cheer like crazy if Nick gets announced as the starter, I would love to hear the reaction of the crowd when he steps on the field the first time if he’s not announced as the starter. If I were Kirby, I may have the Dome PA announce Brendan Douglas during pre-game as the starter, but then when we get the ball the first time, #27 goes on the field instead.

I hope our new coaches are a little smarter than the old ones and have the team practicing for crowd noise unlike the last time we were in the CFA game and Boise fans interfered with our communication. Our fans know what they’re supposed to do on offense, but I’m sorry… I don’t think I’ll be able to contain myself when #27 runs out there the first time. I don’t think I’m alone in that, either.

There weren’t enough Boise fans there to interfere with our communications (maybe 7,000). We had an offensive line that got their butts beaten by smaller, athletic defensive linemen at every turn. It was as quiet as a Sanford home game when we got the ball the first time, and one of the tackles jumped offsides on the first play.

Not sure our fans yet understand that Boise was the better team at the start of that season. We were holding our own with an experienced team until Roundtree went down at ILB. Folks shouldn’t make excuses, makes us sound more like SC and TN. Not going to win them all, we had a decent shot to beat them but were the underdog, to me, in that Boise game.

The return of Chubbanator will provide the team a psychological boost that was drained from them when he went down. The importance of Chubb’s contributions cannot be overstated.

Great news! But for my own selfish revenge moves, I kinda hope Kirby keeps him at like 70% until the tennessee game and then unleashes the beast for a major ass kicking

Excuse me, Mr. Chubb does not “absorb’ hits. He administers them upon others! Hope he takes it easy on our D players in practice.

I know that it’s not truly absorbing hits, but he said he’d be doing Tae Kwon Do since March, doing leg kicks into pads….at least that’s something?
