Mr. Saban, when you’ve lost LSU on roster management…

… can America be far behind?  (Or at least the SEC.)

UPDATE:  Relax, Nick.  Bert’s got your back.

Arkansas coach Bret Bielema said Wednesday that he is opposed to players transferring from one SEC school to another, and clarified that his opinion applies to graduate transfers.

His rationale is… well, a little paranoid.

Bielema said one reason he’s opposed to transfers within the SEC is that there are some things you don’t want other conference schools to know about the inner-workings of your program.

His opinion extends to graduate transfers, he said, because these days, those players are graduating with two years of eligibility left.

I guess that explains his love for non-compete clauses in his assistants’ contracts.

Of course, the ironic thing here is that in Maurice Smith’s case, Georgia’s coaches probably know more about the inner workings of Alabama’s program than Smith does.

Wow, this really is starting to take on life. Can’t see us getting this kid, but little Nicky is going to get hit on the recruiting trail for sure with this one.

Unfortunately for him, this kid will not benefit any team this year. He would be too far behind his future teammates who have been working all summer with only one year to play. His best option at this point might well be to sit out a year.

But yeah, this will not be forgotten in recruiting.

Why is it that kids who aren’t good enough to play know nothing about the program? It would seem that kids who aren’t very good would know everything there is to know, yet they are exceedingly expendable by these same coaches. If you think Bert isn’t going to let his scholarship 4th string RS Junior go ANYWHERE to free up a scholly you’re nuts.

    • Cojones

Plus, what about players that are dismissed by Bert and would hold a grudge? Think they wouldn’t rat out his big “secrets”?

Bert’s full of shit and , unfortunately for him, the world knows it – pretty much like that guy who is the GOP flagbearer.

If you are a coach on the way out [see Vandy vs PSU], and you decide to flip some recruits … just wonder what Bielema would say about that. More than likely he would be all for it, especially if he going back to the Big 10.
After all there is no honor in that conference.
Players under a LOI do not have a buy-out clause. Should they honor their commitment. I think so while they are an undergraduate. After that, I think they have earned the right or privilege to move to another school.
Nick, let the young man go. His mama wants him to go. Even The Bear respected his mama, “mama called”.

College Football administration…where hypocrisy abounds. That which is right today…may not be right tomorrow. Depends on where you sit at the time.

  4. Good thing Russell Wilson transferred from NC State rather than Iowa State or Bert would’ve been forced to turn him away from Wisconsin out of principle.

      Michigan state*

they are in the Big 10, right? Who knows, who really cares?

Good point. But Bert isn’t that bright, Little Nicky fumbling this one is what is so surprising. Fat pitch down the middle and he totally whiffed initially, and continued to look like he is in a stupor. No wonder Bert is so attracted, may be another wife hanging around the corner of Dumb and Dumber.

  5. Brandon

I bet our coaches know a lot more about the inner workings of ole Bert’s program than any potential graduate transfer would too.

  6. Cousin Eddie

If Coach Karma is on your side you really need to re-think your stance.

  7. sectionzalum

surely ol’ bert also supports a rule to prevent coaches from going from one SEC school to another? love to hear that porky beast make that distinction.

  8. AthensHomerDawg

    Let ’em go SEC.

Smith should transfer to Georgia and sit a year at this point. If for no other reason than to show Saban he won’t let him control his future.

Also, what would happen if Smith simply didn’t play football or go to school anywhere this season? Could he save his year of eligibility if he worked a year and enrolled at Georgia for grad school next year?

    • Apparently, he didn’t redshirt since he graduated after 3 years and has 1 remaining. If true, he could pay his own way and take a redshirt while sitting out. After that, he could accept a scholarship for his last year of eligibility. I think one of the issues with the transfer is to receive an athletic scholarship, the student-athlete must have received clearance from his prior school.

  10. ASEF

Or he could play at Alabama and move on to the NFL.

Nick’s not budging. They planned around Maurice, and they will get around to claiming that letting him walk out at that point would be hurting his teammates.

If you’re a starter in the spring game and then want to bail over the summer, it opens uo the quitting on your teammates, too. We’ll hear that one once this drama hits the final curtain.

All, I am betting, over a momma who thinks her son should be on the field more. Seriously, I don’t have time for this shit.

    • If it was his mother and playing time, why would she want him to go play for the 2 coaches that weren’t giving him the playing time she desired? Kirby and Tucker were making the game time playing decisions and filling out the depth chart.

  11. AthensHomerDawg

Does anyone know what degree this young man earned while at Bama?

  12. Red Cup

Saban surrendered. Has to be the recruiting hit M Smith’s brother alluded to

    • Will (The Other One)

Yep, less than 24 hours after the Houston recruits started talking about how bad it looked for Bama and Saban changes his mind.

  13. Go Dawgs!

What the heck is Bret doing that he’s so worried about the rest of us finding out about?!
