There’s always something.
- Kirby Smart thinks Georgia’s receivers are going to have to contribute by committee, which is code for saying he doesn’t have a real go-to guy in the bunch.
- The Seilers are looking at taking steps to strengthen the Uga breed.
- Of all the things mentioned in this piece about how to beat Alabama, Step 5 seems the most relevant.
- USA Today looks at some metrics to rank the conferences.
- Gus picks Sean White to start at quarterback.
- Tim Beckman, North Carolina hardly knew ‘ye… which I think is the school chancellor’s point.
- Bill Connelly ranks all D-1 teams by returning production. For all the offseason talk about North Carolina returning a bunch of starters and Georgia having significant holes in its roster, the Dawgs rank significantly higher than do the Heels.
Something people don’t know about the Seilers commitment to UGA. They don’t receive a penny. All costs are their own. They get a hotel room at games but pay their own travel. Truly a labor of love. Go Dogs.

They don’t make any money off of dog photos, appearences, etc?

Im sure it’s a labor of love, and a labor most any UGA alum, booster or fan would love to have. Make no mistake, the Seilers have enjoyed enormous benefits, perks, and prestige as owners of the Uga line. But I don’t see where it’s their birthright to provide the schools mascot. Eventually, I think it should be handed over to the Vet school to ensure healthy breeding practices. A club made up of Vet students could be the primary caretakers. I’m sure there would be no shortage of volunteers or money from donors for this kind of setup.

I’ve asked why UGA sticks with the Seilers if they refuse to be good stewards of the bulldog breed, and I have to say that I’m thrilled that they’re taking steps to make the line, and maybe the breed, healthier overall.
Good for them and good for us.

Somewhere amongst the evidence and innuendo lies the truth but when a man is down (Beckmann) don’t expect academia to come to his rescue. And who in hell could replace the Seilers?

Agree. Academia has successfully skated (so far) on the academic fraud issue since 1992.
They have no interest in being associated with someone who will bring in more media scrutiny.

I think we should use the American Bulldog. Yes they look less lovable in that cute way but they are taller, have a longer nose, they can actually run fast without dying and they generally look like they could take on anything. A friend of my has one that is almost solid white and has a clipped tail. He is the dog version of Nick Chubb. Very impressive dog. Very friendly but intimidating as hell.

You’re right. I used to breed American bulldogs. They can eat an English without getting a scratch on them. They are like a pit bull on steroids with an under bite.

I’m thinking something between an American and English. Use Americans to give the breed a little more length and breed out the health issues of the English. Call it the Georgia Bulldog and register with the UKC. Screw those elitists at the AKC! /

I had come here to post the Beckman thing at UNC and saw the Senator was already on the case. As a resident of the Triangle who is REALLY looking forward to that first game, I am amused. Not that Beckman is objectively a tool — nothing amusing about that — but that UNC just can’t seem to keep shitting and falling back in it when it comes to stuff.

Read the signs, guys. We don’t have a go-to receiver. None of our QB’s has stood out in preseason practice. We’re not sure how Chubb will do, in game action. Our defensive front seven has lots of question marks.
No way should we expect any kind of blowout against NC. I’m hoping we stay in the game–may need a couple of turnovers–then wear them down in the 4th quarter with our O-line, and by rotating fresh backs.

While we are a walking question mark going into an opening game with so many unresolved issues, I think we have better talent Not everything is going to go wrong for us so I see us winning the game but I think fans should be happy with any W we can get. The usual habit of Dawg fans being unhappy with wins needs to end, no school rolls over all opponents, especially in an opener with a new staff and players that are fighting for spots. Ugly would be OK in this case, just get past this hurdle and build on it before we hit the conference hurdles. I can see ways we could win by 2 TDs, or lose by 2, I will take a FG at the buzzer because this game can determine a decent season from a so-so one when we get to December. As a national spotlight game, it can also help with recruiting and media perception. 9-3, or 8-4, this will likely be one of our most watched games of the year for outsiders.

One should also allow for the possibility that Kirby has learned from a pair of masters in Vince Dooley from his alma mater and Nick Saban from the bulk of his coaching career. The guy doesn’t strike me as a coach who is going to heap praise on his own players, and certainly not in the preseason. No, while I don’t expect to blow UNC out either given some of our deficits, I also don’t expect things to be quite as dire as the picture Kirby is painting in press conferences.

How did Kirby Smart learn from Dooley? He played for Donnan.

Well, you did get away with the most systemic and far reaching case of academic fraud in recent history. For a school with the reputation of UNC that’s saying something. In a very real sense, they never actually fell in it to begin with.

I’m a little surprised that I’m the first person here to celebrate the news of Auburn’s quarterback competition going to Sean White. After seeing him facing Georgia last year on the Plains, I have to say that I’m excited to see more of his work. Gus’ offense works best when he’s got a running quarterback and White certainly doesn’t seem to be that. After seeing the less-than-flattering portrayal of John Franklin’s attitude and abilities in “Last Chance U” on Netflix, though, I can’t say that I’m too surprised by the decision. And, I must admit that I’m a bit relieved. While he seemed to be an interception waiting to happen in the documentary, he’s got some wheels. I was a little worried about what he might become under Malzahn’s tutelage. Guess he hasn’t been picking things up too fast.

RE: How to beat Alabama. Interesting there was no mention of how to play defense against them. If you don’t have a stud, running QB and big play receiver, seems there is no hope. Don’t see how LSU possesses any of the qualities mentioned.

Smart believes UGA receivers will work this season ‘by committee’.
Well this confirms it. Terry Godwin is your starting quarterback. 😉

On Uga: I say we slowly start introducing pitbull, boxer, or american bulldog genes into the pool. They’re all more imposing breeds when compared to the english bulldog, plus they have less health issues. If the changes are gradual enough I doubt anyone would notice enough to raise a fuss.
On Auburn: Sean White was pretty bad last year from what I can recall.
On receivers: Godwin is probably the best we have, but one thing that worries me about him is he seems to have trouble creating separation with db’s. At 5’11 that could be an issue. Great hands though. I wonder if Chaney would consider using him in the slot in a Wes Welker type role. Much easier to shake free from a safety or OLB.
