Behold the ambiguous wonder that is Georgia’s depth chart going into its opener:
That is amusing. By my count, that’s nine “OR”s for the starters on offense — including all three of the quarterbacks — and four for the defense. Makes you wonder if Kirby wants to play the opener without numbers on the jerseys and veils on the players’ helmets.
Seriously, I suppose I get some of this. The offensive line, for example, is a series of dominoes based on whether Catalina is ready to start at left tackle. The tie at wide receiver is probably their way of showing who plays in three-wide sets. And I understand what they’re trying to do at Mike and Will linebacker. But the coaches sure don’t want to tip their hands before Saturday on a lot of spots. How much of that is motivational, how much is bet hedging and how much is smoke being blown North Carolina’s way I’ll leave to you to allocate.
Of greater interest to me is that despite all the talk we were hearing about how many members of the 2016 class were cracking the two-deep, the depth charts aren’t showing it. There are only two true freshman, Eason and Ridley, among the offensive players and four on the defensive side, with three of those being on the d-line, where they really have little choice.
Given Smart’s comments previously, I’m not sure if that says more about the upperclassmen buying into the new coaching staff’s approach better than we thought, or this year’s signing class turning out to be not as precocious as we hoped.
Then again, if there’s one thing to be said about the charts, it’s that they’re not exactly etched in stone.

I’m expecting a big year from Thompson, but damn if that DL depth ain’t scary. Something about seeing it in writing makes it look even worse than I thought.

I bleed red & black, y’all. But I am not gonna lie, I’m getting tired of this bullshit game that Kirby’s playing. I had absolutely no problems personally with his hiring, as I believe he brings a new, more demanding way of coaching and a fresher, and much needed attitude change in Athens.
He will build a championship program here in time.
But…I admit it may take me a while to get used to this General Patton-like and yet VERY
Saban-esque way of seizing total control over everything and refusing to cede anything!
For Pete’s sake, Eason has been taking all the snaps with the 1’s…he’s the guy.
I’m willing to suffer some lumps to get him the experience he needs to ultimately become highly successful, because I truly believe his potential upside is tremendous and that we can build a champion around him and other youngsters on this team.
We ain’t really trying to fool anybody with withholding this “secret”, are we?
If one of our QB’s was a Deshaun Watson type, then maybe the Tarheels might have to game-plan a bit differently, but we don’t and they don’t…so…
Tell us who the starter is, Kirby!!!

But why, though? Why does he owe us that? Maybe he doesn’t want Jacob to get too comfortable or lose focus. Maybe he wants Greyson to stay engaged and not get his head down. Who knows? And who cares? Whomever the QB is on Saturday, I’m going to be pulling for him.

Dude, his job is to lead young men and win games. The press thought Richt was too nice, now Kirby is too mean. You can’t win with the press because they get the last word…so don’t give them a word. At the end of the day, you’re going to be judged on following the rules and winning games. And if you can’t do both simultaneously, you’re out.
Kirby is under no obligation to share any info with the media.

Why do people really care. As long as the Dawgs put 11 out on the field on offense, defense and special teams, I really don’t care if I know a head of time who they are. If they win on Saturday I will care even less which is about 1% to start with.
I am just glad we get to kick this season off Thursday night. The Cal/Hawaii didn’t count in my eyes.

Pray for the defensive line nightly. We have one viable upper classman. Freshman David Marshall was moved to the DL from the Oline. IF we have any injuries to these guys we are toast. Munson would have had a field day with this. How the hell are we even practicing we have like two walk-ons. We could find ourselves having to use linebackers on the interior line. Oh the humanity.

Marshall was never on the o-line if I remember correctly. He was recruited as a defensive lineman.

No, David Marshall is, and always has been a defensive lineman. He was recruited as a DT but has been getting snaps at DE during both the spring and fall camp. Right now he’s 2nd team DT with Hawkins-Muckle.

Don’t know what the problem is here. QBs: Lambert starts followed by either Ramsey or Eason and before it’s over with , all three will play. Otherwise they would have listed them in alphabetical order. Problem solved.
Oh, and Douglas will start with Chubb filling in.
