Kirby Smart got his first win as the Georgia head coach thanks to Nick Chubb and a great performance from his defense against North Carolina. He’s one of the brightest minds in the game, and he appears to be a keeper for the program. With that said, he should be on the hot seat – at least – if Chubb gets even one carry against a miserable Nicholls State team.
If Chubb played and were to get hurt, even Kirby Smart would hate to be Kirby Smart. But… Heisman?

This is so dumb. Please ask this guy to go look up the Vikings QB, pretty sure he blew his knee out in a no-contact situation in practice. Injuries happen. Now clearly, if Chubb is out there in the 3rd and 4th quarter, then we can start getting into arguments about CKS making some bad decisions about using Chubb.

Agreed. I don’t have statistics to back me up, but I think him sitting out an entire game has more potential to do more harm to both his physique and psyche than him playing. I think 15 carries or so through the first half and then sitting him sounds about right (assuming we’re leading by at least 20 at that point).

Pretty easy for me: Either he’s healthy or he’s not. Remember he’s probably still trying to get back into game shape and game experience. He had 220 yards you say? I say it could have been 420!
Also consider if Eason is going to eventually be the guy, would be nice to get them meshing more and more.
Seriously, I would let him start and play first 1.5 quarters or so, maybe 2. At least until it’s reasonably out of reach and you feel like he’s gotten some good work in. Maybe 10-14 carries.

I voted no, although it wouldn’t surprise me to see him out there. But if he gets more than 10 carries, I think it’s a mistake. We should have more than enough RB depth to handle Nicholls State without relying on Chubb.

I hope he gets a buck, buck 25 in 10-12 carries and then calls it a day. I know its dumb, but I dig the 100 yrd/gm streak. Putting the cart before the horse, every Heisman candidate pads their stats at some point. And that kind of thing plays on ESPN, which never hurts recruiting.

This isn’t even a question up for debate. Nichols will be taken seriously and Chubb will play and play a lot until Smart is comfortable we’ve got Nichols under control. Period. That might be less than a quarter, or into the third or more, but Chubb is going to play, and any coach in the country will tell you he should play, until the game is under control.

Definitely should/will start, but agree with the 10 carry estimates referenced above. I would imagine we will be passing a bit more in this game to work out the kinks there so they may like having Chubb in there for blocking purposes, as well. I would say if he tallies 100 yds on 10 carries and comes out for the young guys to get plenty of practice with picking up blitzes and getting their feet wet running in live action, that is perfect.

I agree with the “until 100 yards” group but would cap that around 12-15 carries because 1) he is healthy so playing is OK, 2) he needs to keep his number of hits down, and 3) we need to see the pups play in our yard. Now Sony is the one I don’t want to see play again until Mizzou.

Chubb needs to prove to himself that he can go in every game. I’m sure he is feeling good about himself but you just have to do it in every game. He does not have to tote the rock 30 times but he needs to gain yards. If he gains 150 yards in 4 carries, then I look for him to be sidelined.

Just like in any game, starters should play until you are up by 4 or 5 TDs. Don’t know why we would treat a regular season game any differently. How does a team get in to a rhythm without treating all regular season games the same. Do you really think Kirby wants Chubb going in to a game again Mizzou without Chubb having seen game action in two weeks?

Didn’t Sony break his collarbone against the likes of North Texas in 2014? Not worth it, for anyone, especially Chubb, to run that risk. Holyfield and Herrien would love the chance and need the reps. Nobody wins the Heisman in Sept. against Nicholls.

This is true regarding the Heisman. No one wins the Heisman in September. True, you have to play well for most of the season in general. But no one cares what you did in week one or two. The most important thing is that you perform consistently very well, having notable performances (like 222yds and 2TDs) peppered throughout the season against good opponents and you must cap off your season with an amazing/ungodly/other-worldly performance in your last and/or second-to-last game of the season.

The idea to not play Nick is a ridiculous sentiment. There is such a thing as ‘football shape,’ and you only get in it by playing. There’s a rhythm the body needs to play every week. Moreover, there’s a lot to be said about gaining consistency in playing with a new o-line and QB and the timing. The snaps he plays Saturday will be crucial in that development. He will sit early, but were he not to play would send a bad message to the team, fans and Nick. He needs work to keep getting stronger. You don’t keep him in for the whole game, but get his 10-15 carries in the first half working with Eason, hopefully get his 100 yds and call it a day.

I agree. One of the most frustrating things about the previous coach is how his teams would play down to the level of competition and squeak out wins against teams such as UAB. To not play Chubb would undermine everything Smart has tried to accomplish toward the goal of having his team play to high standards regardless of the competition. That said, I say get Chubb out as soon as the game is under control (~3 TD lead).

He should definitely play in my opinion. I’m hoping Saturday is similar to the spring game where we threw it around a lot. To me, this is more of a time to evaluate Eason and Lambert in an actual game…I think we are all believers that Chubb is back. I just hope Kirby doesn’t show up in shorts (looking at you Dan Mullen!) 😉

Given only the yes/no option, I voted no. Realistically, he needs to play a little, maybe 10-15 carries regardless of yards. Players need to play to keep in the rhythm of the game. I’d be upset if I saw Kirby pull a Meyer and leave him in for the entire game to pad his stats.

I voted “no”. But because I know the folks who have been “in the arena” think differently about these things than I do, I understand he will play. Given that, I’m just hoping to limit the damage. I don’t give a rat’s ass about his 100 yard game streak. I care about him being healthy for the conference schedule. Having said all of that, I would hope that he gets less than ten carries and never leaves the sideline in the second half.

As a corollary to my comment above, I would really hope Chaney uses this game to work on the passing game. He won’t get a better opportunity to loosen the reins on Eason and see how he performs in a relatively low-risk game environment. I hope this happens for the benefit of the QBs, and receivers, and to polish of the OL’s pass-blocking skills.

Agree with everyone voting yes, because I did that, too. He still needs practice, and some reps. I bet he wants both.
That said, he needs to get his 100+ and then more or less sit. I could see bringing him in on an intended pass play as a way of opening up the secondary and letting him work a little on his blocking.

Nevermind the additional practice, getting back into game shape, padding his numbers for the Heisman, etc. Nick should start just for the accolades he’ll receive from the home crowd. Sure, that was pretty much a home crowd last week but the city of Athens hasn’t gotten a chance to show its love on a Saturday between the hedges yet.

Playing scared doesn’t get you anywhere. A guy can suffer a season or career ending injury in practice, or even on a beach in Hawaii playing volleyball.
As for coaches who should be on the hot seat for letting star RBs run against weak opponents (or in the last opponent, for massive # of carries when a game is over), here’s the last 4 cupcakes and last year’s SEC title game for Nick Saban/Derrick Henry:
Derrick Henry vs. Western Carolina Catamounts: 12 carries for 92 yards and 2 TDs.
Derrick Henry vs. Middle Tennessee State: 18 carries for 96 yards and 3 TDs.

I’m going to say again. If nick wants to be in contention for the heisman he will need to play and post up more than 100 yards. Of all people, the players ought to know that the heisman is bullshit nowadays, and the way to win is superficial image maintenance. Most important thing is to “look” like a heisman candidate.
