I’m surprised he didn’t call out the death toll in Haiti for more leverage, then went to Vitter’s site and saw that he referenced Haiti earlier. He was building up to the earthshaking warning to the Gov and is keeping it in his back pocket if the Gov doesn’t do his bidding. From such a warning from a big sugar state as Louisiana, I’m surprised the sugar cartel of Gov Scott backing isn’t wading into the fray.
Meanwhile, environmentalist friends in Fl are praying for a big rain to flush some of Scott’s Big Sugar pollution out of the Everglades and eastern state rivers. They say that he has destroyed east and west coast tourism and fishing for some time to come.

The Republicans are running the Legislature down there and the Gov is teamed up with them and Big Sugar. Plenty of evidence of that statement and no innuendos necessary. If you didn’t see photos of the fish kills for the last two months and read the reports of their citizens, you would never see the pollution they have caused. It is huge and lasting. It is not a a smallish local issue anymore since it impacts the entire southern part of that state. Billions that were set aside earlier to fight Okeechobee pollution has been raided and spent on other political pork of the Republicans as controlled by their Gov and Legislature. Yep, it sure does have a Republican label on it, near-past or older-past. Take a look.
Georgia avoided those pollution pitfalls beginning back in Carter’s tenure (and before if you want to see what an informed Legislature did back then in stopping phosphate mining in the marshes; exactly where most east coast shrimp hatch). I was always proud of my state Legislature for their understanding of ecology and for the work that UGA’s Dr Eugene Odum (known in biological circles as “The Father of Ecology” and wrote the first textbook of Ecology) did in educating them of the pollution problems that they successfully stopped.

Actually, Cojones is stating facts. Back when Carol Browner was head of the Florida DEP, a lot more was being done to protect the environment in Florida. Since then it’s been going downhill steadily. Rick Scott never hid the fact that he was a pro business and pro development guy. Scott would rather side with industry and jobs over the environment and the environment will suffer. It doesn’t really matter what party he belongs to because he laid his cards on the table before he was elected, and he’s who the people of Florida elected. Greed supersedes party affiliation.

Hey, I agree with you. Since Republicans are in charge, I’m willing to stand with you and insist that these problems didn’t take decades to develop. Democrats are environmental saints and Republicans are environmental devils. Also, 6x more phosphorous is NOT entering Lake Okeechobee from residential and residential land to the north than sugar land to the south. That idea is just racist. Just look at the pictures instead.
Hopefully, Florida citizens will come to their senses, elect Democrats, and outlaw sugar farms, orange groves, cattle farms, and residential neighborhoods from the Okeechobee watershed. Peace be upon them.

The sugar lobby bribes both sides in Florida. They create the pollution and Florida taxpayers are on the hook for the damage. Phosphate pollution is causing a lot of harm to other industries in Florida along with the environmental problems. Trying to turn this into an R vs D problem is just stupid. Less than 5% of politicians give half of a shit about fixing anything. That is why this lobbying is so effective. They are all empty suits looking to get re-elected.
The truth is we should not even grow sugar cane in this country. It is much cheaper to import sugar from Brazil than to grow it here or to use HFCS (yay, diabetes!). We have a federal tariff quota limit on sugar and sugar beets specifically to prop up inefficient and polluting sugar farms in South Florida and Louisiana. If we eliminated the tariffs and the other sugar programs designed to prop up the industry, the price of sugar, corn, beef, pork, chicken, etc. would go down. Type-2 diabetes rates would go down along with the associated health care costs. The fishing and shrimping industries would be improved without the fishkills. Alge bloom problems in south Florida would go away. The environment would be cleaner.

His record is similar to the catastrophes of other cities under the long term watch of Dims. Dim “leaders” are only brighter than their rabid followers/puppets, and that is all they have to be. While they are certainly the easier target for blame, the truth is both parties should be blown up as our system is hopelessly broken and corrupt. Katrina was officially a Cat 4 at landfall, but the thing people missed in the obsessive focus on Cat-this or Cat-that was just how damned big Katrina was. The storm surge was unreal.
Charley in Charlotte Harbor was much smaller, but it was incredibly intense within the storm itself, almost like a giant tornado.
And some storms just lumber along, dumping enough rainfall to cause massive flooding.
They change directions unexpectedly. They spin up tornadoes. They knock out power and close roads with flooding and debris.
You never know with these things. Each storm is its own story.
Side note: if this thing wraps around like they project it too, a lot of areas are going to get tropical storm rainfall twice in a week. Which would have next weekend’s games dealing with record flooding.

I can see both side of this argument, though I’m on the sides of the AD’s of both UF and SCU here. IMO they are doing the right thing, and waiting as long as possible to see where this storm is tracking before making a final decision. If the roles were revered and ADGM had to make a similar decision due to some natural event impacting Athens, he would be skewered to no end for making a decision to move the game on, say, Tuesday, only to see the threat continuing to dissipate closer to game time.
This storm is tracking further east, and as of now won’t come all that close to making landfall in S.C. And by then it will be a weak cat 2 storm at best; most likely a cat 1. Its also a very compact hurricane, with peak winds >25 miles east of the western wall only being in the 20-30 mph range; basically the equivalent to a strong cold front we start seeing this time of year.
As it stands now, the weather in Gainesville is looking just fine –cloudy with 10% chance of rain and 15mph winds on Saturday. Columbia is looking windier and wetter, but I strongly suspect this forecast will change for the better as well. In the end, I’ll be shocked if either game is moved from its current time/location.

Delaying the decision on the game isn’t the issue, it is not having researched and developed a Plan B, and C. No one blames them for holding out hope, until you eventually have to access the situation and meet a decision deadline. Unlike tornados, hurricanes provide enough time to make, and implement plans to avoid a catastrophe, unless you are Ray Ray Nagin, of course. I doubt either Columbia or, especially, Gainesville will have enough weather problems to make the field of play a major issue; it is all about the surrounding factors that the SC people are definitely missing out on. Gainesville has a touch of those factors to consider and think about, but SC has about a 2% chance of pulling off the Hail Mary with Mother Nature. The Blimp Shots should be fine, unless tent cities pop up all around, and in, the parking lots surrounding the stadium.

I’m from Louisiana, and when I was in college in the mid-70s we were told that one day a hurricane would hit east of New Orleans and push water into the city and flood it. This was a known risk for more than 40 years and nothing was done to try to reduce it. Nagin is another slime ball politician, but you can’t pin the effects of Katrina on him (unless you want to ignore the facts).

They just interviewed people in Columbia SC on TV…Grocery stores empty and traffic gridlocked…gas stations closing down. Someone on here said the USCe has dismissed it’s student’s to go home…and canceled all events except the friggin football game. Boom must REALLY believe that the Lord churned up and sent this hurricane so his team would have an even chance on Saturday.

Honestly, continuing forward with the game Saturday night is a big benefit for us. The latest forecast for Columbia Saturday night is a 20% chance of showers and 25-30 mph winds. That’s it. And honestly, as I stated above I think these numbers continue to scale downward (I’m thinking no rain and 10-15 mph winds.)
Yet, I’d guess that the stadium will only be 60-70% full and fairly listless by their standards compared to most years over there. Let’s face it, playing at SCU has always been a nightmare for us, but this year they won’t have near the home field advantage as typical.
Oh yea…Eason has a cannon of an arm. The only thing I’m worrying about passing the ball is he throwing into a downwind and puncturing a hole in a WR’s chest.

I am sure the fans in Florida and South Carolina have nothing better to do than travel to a football game after they have been evacuated – stop off at the big game before returning to their flooded/damaged homes. Check the latest track — the hurricane won’t pass anywhere close to Gainesville or Columbia. As mentioned, the hurricane itself won’t even make landfall with the SC coast, and given its unreal compactness, I suspect SC sees minimal damage. Heck Columbia will only get an inch or so of rain out of it any maybe 20mph winds. Yet you’re attempting to make it seem like the hurricane will ‘pass through town’ of each locale. Nice.
I just spoke to a friend of mine in the Winter Park (Orlando) area, which is a big evacuation zone for all those east of them which is supposed to take a direct hit. He said that, aside from the typical grocery store buzz and such, everything is quite normal.

FYI…the issue in Columbia isn’t that they will get a lot of rain. The problem is that the governor already ordered the evacuation of the coast and the evacuees are largely in Columbia (and on up into the upstate area). So imagine gameday traffic and the strain on the infrastructure times 2. And then add in gameday traffic on top of that. Haley said that if you want to have the game, you will have no support from the state. That means no state troopers directing traffic or SLED working security.

As somebody who went through Charley you never know what will happen with a hurricane until it happens. Charley was going to Tampa until it turned right into Charlotte Harbor for a run across the state. I’m sitting in The Villages right now hoping that this storm stays out at sea and actually turns north instead of northwest but unlike all those hurricanes you went through this one is going to go the length of the states east coast. Foley said the UF LSU game was cancelled because you can’t hold a sporting event without there being any first responders and the city and county and state said there would be none. So yea we can send our team into Columbia and pray that the hurricane keeps to it’s course, until it doesn’t, then it will be too late.

Why politicize this? When Rachel Carson wrote Silent Spring in 1962, Democrats were in control and held power for many more years. Both parties are to blame for the Everglades problems, and plenty of Democrats have shirked their environmental responsibilities. However, Rick Scott, has drastically cut funding for the Florida DEP and water management districts, he’s put developers on boards that decide environmental issues, and has been a horrible steward of the environment. I don’t care if he’s a Republican, but his tenure has been truly disastrous from an environmental perspective.

Hell, I just looked at a couple of SEC schedules and it took me about 3 minutes to come up with a plan to play all these games without playing this weekend. Just involves taking advantage of already scheduled bye weeks. Feel free to pass this on to the geniuses running things in Birmingham, Baton Rouge, Gainesville, etc.
