Game day thoughts, Georgia-South Carolina edition

I bet you saw the first three words and thought I was going to discuss the Falcons. Okay, I keed, I keed.

Anyway, who the hell really knows what to expect today?  Do we get the Nicholls version of Georgia, or the North Carolina one?  Is there an accumulated hangover from the losses to Ole Miss and Tennessee?  Does Nick Chubb get more than one carry?  Does Blankenship get to try an attempt outside the 20-yard line?  Do Boom and Roper recreate the magic that carried them to an unexpected, lopsided win at the 2014 Cocktail Party?

And that’s all before you even get to the game being played a day later than anyone expected just a week ago.  Or whether the wind might have an impact today.

Advanced stats would suggest Georgia is worth the consideration of being more than a touchdown favorite this afternoon. S&P+ has the Dawgs at 58th and the ‘Cocks at 88th, with the matchups being what you’d expect:

  • Georgia offense (60th) vs. South Carolina defense (32nd)
  • Georgia defense (41st) vs. South Carolina offense (121st)

As for the other part of the game…

  • Georgia special teams:  125th
  • South Carolina special teams:  51st

If I have my hopes today, they’re that (1) Eason and the other true freshmen continue to grow; (2) Chaney continues to be open-minded with the offensive game plan; (3) the defense shows that its problems through the first third of the season were due in large part to the quality of the offenses it’s faced; and (4) special teams don’t soil themselves.

I feel okay about the first two, maybe not so much about the third and totally despondent about the fourth, so if you put a gun to my head, I’d say Georgia wins, but doesn’t cover.

Feel free to respond in the comments.

I think we win if we don’t give up non offense touchdowns. This is going to be a battle of two pretty bad teams.

  2. Hardcoredawg 93

If a lot of people touch the ball on offense like last week we win by 2 touchdowns.

If the plan is to continually run up the middle with Chubb it’s anyone’s game.

  3. Russ

Channeling my inner Munson, I have a bad feeling about this.

  4. Uglydawg

We’re all in the Twilight Zone.

  5. Noonan

    Forget it, Jake. It’s Columbia.

  6. I feel a little worried that the gut punch from last week will linger. I am not over that yet, so how can they be? We need Chubb to take this game over early and Michel to provide the spark that he can do better than most.

  7. What Fresh Hell is This?

Lord have mercy, Doucheberger and Palmer calling the game…

  8. Dawgflan

Go Dawgs! Nice start Chubb. God I hate that Swedish techno crap the chickens play.

  9. I feel like I shouldnt drink as it is Sunday. Then I hear Brent and Jesse’s voices, and suddenly I want to inject heroin in my eyeballs to make the pain go away faster.

  10. Russ

    Well that was nice.

  11. North State Dawg

    Sacarolina’s got nothing.

  12. North State Dawg

    what did Walker do?

  13. Carolina is just bad.

But then again so is our O line

  14. D as in Dawg

Today we decided our passing game and blocking would be atrocious. Good grief. Nice to be winning, though.

  15. North State Dawg

However, we ma have the worst kicking game anywhere. Below average even for a high school team.

  16. Russ

Why not try the field goal? Perfect time to.

  17. North State Dawg

We took a delay-of-game penalty so we didn’t have to try a mid-range field goal. Embarrassing.

  18. Russ

Thankfully Sackerlina sucks more than we do. Sloppy.

  19. playmakers in space

Kirby doesn’t have a fucking CLUE how to manage a clock. Those last 3 minutes of game time may have been the ugliest football I’ve ever seen.

  20. playmakers in space

Good thing we kept those two time outs in our back pocket into the half.

  21. Dawgflan

Little on the job training for our QB and HC. And Chaney is being too predictable. Even when the run works we need to mix it up a bit more. Either we loosen up and blow the game wipe open, or we let the hang around and potentially blow it. History says…

  22. 69Dawg

We are wasting turn overs again. Hope it doesn’t bite us in second half.

  23. Digitalis

This is a day when it looked like we could overpowering another team. So why did we start chucking bombs into the wind?

  24. Dave

Two weeks in a row clock management is an issue. Someone needs to fix that quickly.

  25. Apparently being pushed into the other teams bench and then being piled up on and not allowed to get up is grounds for being flagged for unsportsmanlike now….

  26. Digitalis

    This is Nick Chubb’s game.

  27. playmakers in space

Chubb & Sony are unstoppable so we…. hand it to iMac and throw a quick slant once we’re in the red zone. What. The. Fuck.

  28. D as in Dawg

I’m trying really hard not to jump on the Chaney’s an idiot bandwagon, but damn, dude, help me out. Do what works and stop out thinking yourself.

  29. D as in Dawg

Yeah, you morons, like the early hit on the interception and the stiff arm offensive pass interference on the throw to Samuel. Shut your idiot mouths.

  30. Digitalis

This is the worst team we’ve played all season and we’ve let them back into the game. Something stinks, and you can smell it all the way to Denmark.

  31. Uglydawg

Cocks just scored..Douchberger needs a tissue to clean up with.

  32. Russ

Good thing we have a defensive genius as our head coach.

Oh yeah that’s right. Our 4 and 5 stars on defense aren’t as good as the offensive juggernaut that is Sackerlina.

  33. sniffer

This is for someone who should know. Shouldn’t Eason be “better” by now? What is he still learning? I don’t mean he should be all conference by now, but, damn.

  34. Uglydawg

Boom has been uncharacteristically calm this whole game.

  35. D as in Dawg

Musberger is a damn fool. I’m sorry. What a tool for any team not named Georgia.

  36. Digitalis

Boy, did Musberger want Imac’s TD overturned.

  37. Uglydawg

We lack offesive imagination inside the 10..
Muschamp needs to be put in a small boat and set adrift in the middle of the sea. What a friggin’ idiot he’s making out of himself. He’s actually made me enjoy JP because JP has had to bail his biased ass out about a dozen times during the game. He just insisted IMac was out of bounds on that TD catch and run. He thinks his will somehow trumps reality.
He really isn’t worth this much I’m not so bright either I suppose.

  38. Dawgflan

Whew. Needed that TD. Note to Chaney – If you don’t want 11 defenders keying on the TV maybe you throw once in a blue moon out of all the jumbo packages you heart so much. Or maybe keep running out of the 3 wr sets that are working.

  39. Uglydawg

Man….where would we be without Smith…now I see why Saban wanted to keep him in Tuskertown.. He’s been making key plays all season.

  40. Russ

Good Lord, I get running the ball but we’re not even trying to disguise anything. If the RB is on the left of the QB, the play is going right and vice versa. Even Sackerlina can figure that out.

  41. Russ

Our saving grace is just how bad Sackerlina is.

  42. Russ

And yet again we don’t challenge an obvious blown call. We had the INT.

    • Raleighwood Dawg

Well, it appears that we’ll win this game. Man, was this a lackadaisical effort, though. Seems like the hurricane took all the fire out of our play.

    • Mayor

^This. I thought the SEC instituted this review system by guys in B’ham to take this kind of BS out of the equation. Player intercepts, falls to the ground and while laying on the ground the receiver rips the ball out of his hands–and the refs on site call that a completion? What a crock!! Then the TV ref does nothing!! I get that Kirby doesn’t want to lose a TO which might become very valuable in a tight game but there is NO excuse for the TV refs……

  43. Uglydawg

Did we just get *#X%ed ? That was an interception I think. Shouldn’t it have been reviewed?

  44. Mary Kate Danaher

Brent clearly has money on Carolina +7.

  45. Turd Ferguson

We’re bad enough as it is. We don’t need the officials to screw us over as much as they have these past couple games. Seemed pretty clear that was an INT. And if it wasn’t, it was an incomplete pass, since the ball hit the ground as he was ripping it out of Mauger’s hands.

  46. Uglydawg

If Carolina pulls off a miracle finish here, that no-call on the interception will be one of the biggest of many big screw jobs Georgia has had.
    Don’t think it can’t happen.

  47. 69Dawg

    Kirby should have challenged.

    • Uglydawg

Absolutely he should have. That was the game if it’s overturned. Where are these fools that are supposed to review every play? It never seems to work for us…only against us.

  48. Uglydawg

Douchberger is about to need another tissue.

  49. Derek Smart

Someone please explain to me how Kirby fails to challenge a call or call a TO 2 weeks in a row on an obvious missed pic or reception.

    • mwo

Our defender catches the ball, lands on his torso, and they give the ball to the other team. We get screwed every week by the officials, I am beyond sick of it. Something HAS to be done.

      • Mayor

The SEC needs to investigate what is going on with the refs about Georgia. This has been going on for YEARS and the TV refs are in on it, too.

    • Because timeouts are to win the game, not to speculate whether officials will correct themselves. Second half timeouts are coupons for 40 seconds of additional game time. Kirby clearly is from that school of thought.

  50. Uglydawg

    Douchberger just went limp.

  51. D as in Dawg

Somebody in the Process needs to tell CKS about the interception. He still thinks his defender was beat.

  52. Nashville West

Godwin messed up. If he goes down at the 5 we’re in victory formation and running out the clock. Turned out ok but not good football. BTW, USC, the real one, had a receiver take a knee on the 11 yesterday rather than score so they could run out the clock against Colorado. That is good game management.

  53. Dolly Llama

Listening on internet radio from Raleigh in the car as I charge the phone, on day 2 without power. I love everybody. And I liked Quincy’s last name when it rhymes with “auger.”

  54. Scorpio Jones, III

    We gave Will a hairlip.

  55. Bulldog Joe

For those who recorded the game, check out Rico McGraw after the Kick Six.

I bet you will laugh when you figure it out.

  56. Back away from the ledge. Better teams than this (2000, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2014) have shit the bed offensively in Columbia. Eason is 18 and is missing a shit ton of reads. Awful day for him. But the OL is playing much better, and the backs are legit. I would have loved a more comfortable win, but I’ll take it.

    To hell with the poultry.

  57. Eason is just out of sync today. He had his real first Freshman type of a game. More eggs and muffins to eat.

  58. Spike

What was the deal with that Snot Rocket on Boom’s mug?

  59. 3rdandGrantham

As someone who has been a sunshine pumper for CKS since he was hired, I have to say that he has a long, long way to go before he’s considered a solid SEC coach. Simply too many amateur mistakes and moments in general where it just looks like he’s over his skis.

I really hope he can improve in a hurry; otherwise we’re going to have loaded teams yearly talent wise that manage to disappoint and basically drive all of us batty.

    • Digitalis

I’ve been rooting hard for Kirby and really expected a lot, maybe too much. I don’t care about the talent differential; we obvious won’t and can’t win them all. But we should look prepared and disciplined. A leader must give the impression that he (or she) is in control. Did we get a hot new head coach or a talented DC? Hope it’s the former.

  60. Biggus Rickus

Damn, there are some really ridiculous comments in this thread. They came out emotionally ready on a weird day a week after an emotionally draining loss. Smart needs to work on some things, but I’ve certainly witnessed worse performances than this against shitty South Carolina teams.

    • Athens Townie

The team was ready to play and would have totally dominated if our true freshman QB didn’t have a true freshman day.

      Take a breath, guys.

      • W Cobb Dawg

Not just freshman Eason. Nice contributions from Herrien and Nauta, and at least a few on the DL like Rochester, Marshall & Clark.

        • RandallPinkFloyd

I read these boards and think to myself: ‘Georgia fans are the worst.’

We just won…in Columbia…with a true freshmen looking like Jonathan Moxon after a night at the titty bar in west Texas. Columbia is a place where we have seen MUCH more talented teams than this one completely shit the bed to undermanned USCe squads. Enjoy the win. Kirby has his bad moments, but I don’t see these as reasons to jump off the bridge.

Ditto what W Cobb Dawg said. Lot of freshmen out there making plays. This team has some young talent and it is going to be a fun ride the next 2-3 years.

          • Mayor

The teams the Dawgs lost to in Columbia like that were coached by HCs that were WAAAY better than Boom, though. Boom is our secret weapon. I hope they keep him for many years.

  61. Biggus Rickus

Also, in addition to blowing the interception call, the officials also gave South Carolina a pass interference and a roughing the passer in the red zone, both of which were terrible calls.

    • Debby Balcer

And did not call pass interference when the Cocks did it.

      • Uglydawg

I thought the refs were pretty bad both ways. They let pass interference go and let it go and let it go and then call it. Both teams got away with lot of it. The blown interception was really bad, though, and could have cost us the game.
There doesn’t seem to be a solution. I mentioned a few years back that coaches should be able to ban one ref (or crew ) from doing their games for a year. If two different coaches ban the same ref, he get’s a year off. If three ban him, he’s fired for good.
The problem is we’ve been told the auto-review would fix the mistakes..and it hasn’t. It has been used to screw some teams (see review of Dobbs spiking the ball..which was really a flimsy excuse for an ex post facto call on Georgia for not getting a man off the field fast enough), (see the non-interception in today’s game), (see the Tennessee touchdown that the ball was out of bounds at the pylon on), (see the unnecessary flag on Georgia for one guy having his helmet off celebration), and ask yourself where the reviewers were and who the reviewers were. Today? I think they were watching the NFL…
I sure hope they aren’t collecting a pay check for today’s “work”.

        • Mayor

Ug, you see these review screw-ups as benign. I see them as something more insidious–fixing games. If you believe, as I do, that the reviewers have an agenda then those screw-ups start looking a lot different.

  62. Cojones

SC cocks score half as much as Dawgs’. Sounds about right. Heard it for years.

    • Uglydawg

Game wasn’t as close as the score.
Eason had a little trouble with the wind, and being a little over-hyped..but the running game more than compensated and I think the only pic he threw was on a tipped ball…Had one TD pass.
There was a weird feel to the whole game..I think a lot of that is because Willie B. stadium is just a weird place..the stupid spaceship landing music, the copy cat towel waving, the copy cat semi-Seminole chant and that stupid bird crowing like it’s got a sandspur stuck in it’s ass…Sunday afternoon, and the aftermath of Matthew all combined for a dreamy, boring feel.

  63. BWD

Did UGA win today? I just read through the comments on this thread, and I’m pretty sure we must have lost.

  64. Uglydawg

Dawgs 4 and 2 and were very close to being 5 and 1.

    • Have you read the comments??? We have LIGHT YEARS to go before we can even think about being a factor in the east.😉

    • Athens Townie

Agreed. I’m satisfied with where we stand right now at 4-2. We were very nearly 5-1 and in control of the East. (On the other hand, we could easily be 2-4.)

But, right now, I just want to see development and improvement this season. And most importantly — a strong signing day in February.

To get where we want to go, Kirby needs to recruit better than Richt did. Richt didn’t recruit as well as many of us think he did, especially considering his roster management (undersigning, low retention, poor development, and so on).

  65. WF Dawg

I’ve never heard a commentator be as consistently wrong about what he was seeing as Musberger was today. He either needs new glasses or to be put out to pasture.

Eason missed high most of the day and just never made a correction to his release point.

But the OL has really turned a corner these last two games.

    • Russ

Agree on the OL. Chaney is using them the right way now.

      • Dylan Dreyer's Booty

What? You don’t agree with what he said about Musberger? He was horrible today. He even made Jesse Palmer look good, and that takes some doing. It wasn’t so much that he was a SC fan – okay, yeah, he was – but it was much more that he was just flat wrong on so many calls. He wasn’t just wrong, he was adamantly wrong. I was embarrassed for him. He needs to be glad ESPN has so many games to televise that they pretty much have tom keep him.

  66. Digitalis

Well, I just hope all Dawgs are safe and soon will have their power on, and that we all will be celebrating another SEC title within a relatively short period of time.Selah.

  67. Will Trane

When your rushing game is going you park your passing with a young QB playjng his 6th game and on the road.
SC was not goin to give up the deep ball
But a short one to goaline is good
Thought Dawgs were in control from beginning.
Did some good things on both sidesof ball
When you can score you score and build the lead.
Did good considering the past couple of days circumstances
    Both teams

  68. rchris

Until they removed the rest of the letters from the sign over the press box, it told South Carolina to ame(sic) at Coach Kirby Smart (cks).

  69. Soiled Sheets

    That’s right, W Cobb.

Totally green team from top to bottom. Everyone is learning on the job, including Kirby.

I’m very happy with Sunday’s win, especially considering what usually happens when we travel to South Carolina.
