“I just saw green grass.”

So, you tell me:  is Kirby Smart going to make Terry Godwin run stadium steps for Georgia’s best special teams play of the season?  After all, “… there is a valuable lesson to learn from that.”

Muschamp allowing him to score was a stroke of genius.

Actually, coach probably needs to work on coaching decisions at the end of the half or at the end of the game. Then talk to me about Godwin’s play.

^This. If left to his own devices Kirby would have found a way to lose that game at the end.

^And then this. Mishandling the clock to end the first half. Not calling a TO on the Pic that wasn’t called. Ridiculous. Even in the presser he referred to that play as backing them up instead of us getting the ball back. Seems over his head.

Kirby needs to lighten up about stuff like this.

Kirby has a point–there is a lot of bad that can happen when a return is attempted. Just imagine what the conversation would be if he’d dropped the ball at the goal line or gotten the ball knocked out…we’d be yelling about why he didn’t just go down.

Thinking on “what might have been” is an exercise in futility. Every football player is taught to score not to consider the odds on what could happen. Smart continues to disappoint me in his decision-making AND in his commentary on players. Why no commentary on Easson? “The wind was a factor” was only comment on Easson’s miserable day. Orth seemed to find the control over the wind with 288 yards of passing??!! One high point to it all was the number of freshmen/sophomores who played and played well. Speaking of freshmen, where is the touted running back Holyfield?? Is he not showing up at practice? Fortunately, we have the star of the future in Herrien. Is Crowder still on the team?

  7. A kid like Godwin should be trusted to make the right decision on the field. I say good for Terry that he made the play.

It’s not the end of the world, but by scoring, you give them, say, a 2% chance to win. By just going down, they have about a .1% chance to win (fumbled snap when taking a knee or something).

Point is, why increase anybody’s chances there, especially after what happened against UT?

    Not a huge deal, though.

Score the damn ball! Falling down is playing not to lose.

Not really. Going down and taking knees is the surer thing in that situation. It’s not that big a deal, but Smart isn’t wrong.

SC still had a timeout, I think. So it’s possible we may not have been able to kneel it all the way down to zero. I believe Godwin’s play was surer path to victory than dealing with possible UM/MSU 2015 ending…

yep. Pretty sure that we would have given them back the ball with time on the clock and 7 point lead.

Not sure that is a better situation than giving them back the ball with a 14 point lead.

There was a minute and a half left. One timeout was not enough to get the ball back.

I’ll take a 14 point lead over 7 all day any day.

Kirby obviously had the under bet. I had the over 41 1/2 point total and realized early 4th Qtr. that I would come up at least7 points short. When SC scored my thoughts went to that KY/Miss St finish a few years ago when Miss State was rated #1 and pulled that very same stunt Godwin did. But I figured I couldn’t be that lucky or I would have bought a Lottery Ticket. Dang, then I had to sweat the XPT thinking the Old Lady Luck couldn’t be that kind.

Now KS is chewing my pal TG out publicly for saving UGA fans, wtf? Go worry about how we don’t score in obvious situations and stop putting barriers up for playmakers like Terry Godwin. And while your are at it, keep that challenge flag close by at all times. 🙂 (Terry, next round is on me pal, great decision!)

I wouldn’t say he has chewed anybody out publicly. This is getting way over-blown. All he said is that the smarter thing to do would have been to go down there, we take 3 knees and we’re out with the W. And he’s right. By scoring there, you give USCe a chance to score, get the onside and score again… however unlikely, after what we saw last week, I wanted to take the 7 point W and get the hell out of there without giving them the ball back too. All this is much ado about nothing.

Carolina owed us an onside kick recovery for a TD from last year 8-).
    Besides, it was awesome.
As soon as he hit the gas you could see it was a TD all the way, and we (well, my crew and the UGA fans around us) went nuts waaaay before he got to the end zone.

I think Kirby is just channeling his inter Saban. The difference is that Kirby has made as many mistakes in these first games as any of the players. He needs to go easy on the criticism of one of the few WR’s we have that can actually do his job. Kirby not being prepared to challenge that interception call was the worst coaching error he has made to date. You would almost think he either wasn’t paying attention or he didn’t remember he could challenge. After the way he let UT school him on the call last week you’d think he would have been ready. Coach needs to run some steps for those two screw ups. Not calling timeout at the end of the first half was just him not communicating with the official. Another rookie mistake. We are OJTing a staff and a team and we are 4-2 but with the exception of UNC we have not won against a team with a pulse (I seem to remeber hearing this a lot last year). The Vandy game may have a baseball score 3-2 or 7-6.

I doubt that Kirby was watching but the same type of play was called correctly in the Miami v FSU game.

Interception and the defender was “downed” first so he kept the ball. I believe the Offensive guy did eventually end up with the ball after the defender was downed. But it was called and reviewed correctly.

      Not so in our game.

CKS forgot to put Trent Thompson in on the hands team to tackle Godwin when he caught the onside kick. That’s the only reason he scored…

It’s not that scoring is bad, but it’s no necessarily the right play. I said it while he was running. I was screaming “get down” There was 1:40 on the clock at the kick. He scores with 1:34 left. They had 1 T.O.?

-What if they run the K.O. back and now get another onside chance with about 1:20-25 left?
-What if they go for a quick score in about a minute and get another onside chance with 0:30 for another couple of plays and a hail mary?

With 1 timeout left, the recovery won the game. The best play there is to fall down inside the 5. Take a knee – Timeout. Now there’s about 1:30 left. Take a slow knee on 2nd. Now there’s about :45 left. Slow knee on 3rd and you probably don’t have to snap it on 4th. If you do, the 4th down actually runs down the last 2-3 seconds.

Though we stoned them up 14, we put the ball back into their offenses hands, which is not the play here. We should be delighted we have a coach thinking about these things. Absolutely, utterly delighted.

We should be delighted that we have a coach mismanaging the clock and not challenging plays that could change the game.
