R & B

Kudos to Patrick Garbin for digging up this picture.

No word on whether Herschel joined them on stage for this:

  1. That’s pretty awesome. Yes, Herschel was the male version of a brick house. #GOAT

  2. Man up to this moment, I always thought brick house was sung by Rick James. Now someone find a picture of Herschel and James…that would be amazing.

Herschel almost always wore those sleek, black Adidas walking around campus. One rainy day in ’81 I was trudging uphill to North Campus with my head down and smacked right into somebody coming downhill who I really didn’t see. Pissed me off and as I looked up…yep, Herschel. Big smile and “you OK?”. I mumbled an apology and watched him stroll off. Was like walking into a wall…pure solid mass of human.

I was at that show. One of the best I’ve ever seen. I don’t recall Herschel coming on stage, but I do remember Lionel Richie saying “How ’bout them Dawgs!” and the crowd going nuts.

I was in school at that time, yet I have zero memory of this. Of course, I lost a lot of brain cells back then.

I guess the Student Union got tired of James Brown not showing up (except during halftime shows – which were epic).

Herschel gained over 200 yards against Vandy as a freshman. On one run, he ran over 8 or 9 defenders on his way to a long TD. Almost thought he was going to swing back around to drill the 2 or 3 guys he’d missed. One guy in particular tried to take him head on, but HW one hand threw him down like a used kleenex.

That’s a pretty good picture, to
