    So, 7 games in, should we have former NFL returners making vines about how piss poor our coverage is?

      Well Bfinn was no returner, but he was an nfl player. And a good WR for we don’t know where it is going, but it is going to get there in a hurry Vick throws.

        He had 10 kick/punt returns over his career. That means he was practicing as the backup for the Falcons. So he certainly knows what returners do and what to look for.

        Although it doesn’t take a genius to just run away from all the red jerseys.

          True, now he was a Special teams player. Some of those returns could have been onside kicks and such. But yes, he knows how to look at the film. But even an idiot can see that UGA did not have the lanes filled and lets be honest. That kick off return ultimately beat UGA this last weekend.

    But lets all meet at the right hash mark.
    Now if you are a college player, D1, your ass should be embarrassed by that, even if you had no special teams coach.
    I’ve seen better coverage than that with 7th grade teams.
    Every high school football player in Georgia understands kickoff coverage!!
    Would you call that lack of discipline or just plain dumb as hell.

    The thing about that video by Finnegan that depresses me so much is that I think if I was giving a test on football, the players would all know the answer to what they should do. I thought this was an area where attention to detail was going to be a partial solution. I have posted earlier in the season about how CKS and his support staff and the resulting attention to detail was going to be a good thing for the team. Where was it Saturday? I wish I knew the answer. It’s one thing to get beat by a better team with better athletes, or even to get beat by a weaker team when some flukey thing happens, but this is the kind of game that got CMR fired. Sigh. I don’t know how no to be a Dawg fan, though.

    My best aspirations have been riddled and my reasonable expectations are in danger of serious damage. My sense is that we have a lot of athletes, but not that many teammates, iykwim. C’mon guys, loosen up and play together.

      I think part of it is depth related. If you don’t have the quality depth to where you can bench the people that aren’t doing it right, then it’s hard to get their attention.

        That kind of kick coverage ain’t a depth thing, friend. It’s a coaching and focus thing, and it shouldn’t be happening this far into the season of a new regime that’s trying to instill a new way of being.

        If you’re going to lose, lose tough. This was lose dumb and Ole Miss was lose ugly.

    You guys act like this is all poor coaching.

    None of you even take into account this was on a short week with less time for preparation. CKS and Beamer have this kick covered with a full week’s prep.

    I’m surprised more people haven’t picked up on this perfectly reasonable explaination.

    What if – just a hypothetical – the kicker was asked to directionally kick off and the coverage team setup to defend against a directional kick that didn’t go where it was supposed to go? There’s a whole host of things happening on these plays that you guys simply don’t know. Can we at least admit that?

      If it was schemed this way, that almost makes it worse.

      If – hypothetically – we are game-planning around pinpoint accurate kicks (after all the kick did wind up in the appropriate quadrant) that pin the opponent to the sideline with this batch of Nuke Laloosh kickers, we are in worse shape than I thought.

      You might find this of interest.

      Darrius Sims returned the opening kickoff 95 yards. He said special teams coordinator Jeff Genyk utilized a counter kick return to create a wide cutback lane. Sims didn’t provide too many details, but he said Georgia’s coverage team was fooled by what initially looked like the return scheme the Commodores had used all season.

      “Everybody had seen the same return every week, so (Genyk) tried to switch it up,” Sims said. “So it was a little counter, and there was some great blocking by people on the kick return team. Everybody did a good job on the blocking scheme. It was easy for me.”

        Well, his last sentence was obvious. He wasn’t touched (or even close to being touched) until Reggie ran him down at the 5. I was thinking it was a Kenneth Towns moment until we got flagged twice. I guess Kirby was paying attention to the details of running repeated between the tackles.

            I’m curious to know what all these highly paid back office quality control anylist assistants do and what they’ve been reporting to the on field staff. There’s a lot of us fans “why do we keep forcing the man ball when we just have a roster built for chase me ball”.

            Let’s do a FOI request for the list of job titles and job descriptions on the football staff.

              Good luck, but doubt you find out very much after the 6 month FOIA waiting period other than we have a lot of guys being paid well over $100,000 with very vague job titles and responsibilities. These are the types of jobs you or I would’ve probably volunteered to do for free just to be around the team when we were younger.

      I literally asked BFinn that on Twitter, and he said that it doesn’t matter, nobody is in their lanes. I tend to agree with him, and if we don’t have a kicker that can put it in a particular spot and the guys were where they were supposed to be, stop sending them to one side.

    I get angry every time I think about this kick-off coverage. If I can teach 8 year old girls in soccer to stay in their lanes and do their jobs when the ball comes their way, what’s going on with this coaching staff and players? Pitifully out-coached and out-played.

      I know it has become fashionable on this blog (and by CKS) to blame the players but for crying out loud these are 18,19, 20 and 21 year old kids. They will play up to the level they are coached. When it happens all the time it isn’t the players. I sincerely believe this is the worst coaching staff I have ever seen at Georgia going back to when I first started watching Georgia football in 1964–and that is all on Kirby.

        Mayor please forgive my typing if it appears I’m calling out the players. I always leave it to them for self-reflection on what they did and did not do. We were indeed out coached last Saturday. Time will tell if this staff can improve quickly enough. Based upon the stubborn play calling strategy throughout this season so far, I’m beginning to wonder who will (or maybe already has) quit on who: the coaches on the players or the players on the coaches?

        I could care less about the “lanes.” I want to see a solid first touch and their eyes up to pass quick on my u-10 team. They are getting it…watching them string together 7 or 8 passes is super fun to watch. Don’t stifle their creativity demanding they stay in their lane. Its called the beautiful game for a reason.

        That said–good lord I wish the UGA Special teams didn’t show so much creativity.

    I hope beyond hope that Kirby starts learning( or seeks help) how to be a successful head coach and soon because his entire staff has dropped many balls all season long. The attention to detail that I’ve been beaten over the head with hasn’t been there. I thought attention to detail and micro-management, a la Saban, would be a problem but it seems like he isn’t involved enough. Whatever the cause, there have been way too many bad and costly mistakes and most are freaking basics

    And if dumping Chaney seems too Boom-like, I suggest ‘kicking him upstairs’ to a job with the quality control guys in the booth. Then hire a new OC. I really wish Kirby had landed his first offer at OC, Dan Enos.

    The first play of both halves gave Vandy momentum.Vandy basically was handed three points when we had to start at our 2-yard-line in the 2nd half. More kickoff team mistakes.

    It seems every blog poster and UGA fan in the world should have “expert football coach” or “offensive coordinator guru” on their resume. If you’ve ever played the game, it doesn’t take long to figure out its difficult to do pretty much anything without a capable O-line and a freshman QB. As for the comedy of brain farts in other areas of the game… who the hell knows.
