Rule #76: No excuses, play like a champion. No one had a problem before Spurrier arrived and its not like UGA always shines under the Georgia Dome lights anyway.
The players stay in a hotel either way, the preparation for the game should be the same, not to mention UGA has played in Jacksonville 2 more times than Florida going back to 2013 if you count the gator/tax slayer bowls. If we had any mental toughness over the last 25+ years, the trip to Jacksonville would add to the team’s focus going into the game rather than exacerbating the yips.
Whining about the neutrality of one of the last great annual neutral site games and traditions of college football is only for the Atlanta-centric part of the fanbase who are accustom to the 1 hour glide to Athens and back.

Modern day UF is not the UF of the 80s and earlier and likely isn’t coming back. Bottom line, playing there is a disadvantage every year and screws with UGA’s schedule in other ways too
I’ve been to the WLOCP dozens of times and have enjoyed myself but it’s getting harder and harder to justify it. But, October golf and industrial wasteland tailgating are somehow sacred to many UGA fans, so ain’t much changing.

“Rule #76: No excuses, play like a champion” is from a movie. It was used in that case not as a buzzword or buzzphrase(?), but to highlight the fact that playing in Jacksonville has somehow turned into an excuse for losing in Jacksonville.
Mental toughness is a thing, but has been absent from UGA so long its probably not recognizable anymore.
I’ll concede that this isn’t the 80s anymore but its not the UGA of the 90s either, we shouldn’t be scared to play a team in a stadium 5 hours away just because its in their state or closer to their school than it is to ours. Do you think LSU or Alabama has ever been concerned about playing a team from the East in Atlanta?
Playing Florida in Jacksonville is part of UGA traditon that predates Uga, Sanford Stadium, and even the nickname “Bulldogs”. Not to mention it is a traditional marquee game that results in either euphoria or soul crushing agony but never anything in between. That is the sacred part.

when I was a kid and would hear references to the WLOCP, I had visions of smartly attired ladies in cocktail dresses and dapper dressed men in the West Palm sttyle of clothes, sipping martinis.

Assuming you are correct that (insert West SEC team here) would not entertain such an arrangement, I would argue that the uga/fla game is different on the grounds that-
-Ticket holders-
A)Many UGA fans make arrangements years in advance to travel to the Coast for a fall vacation and have done so for years.
B)See previous statement in the comments about tradition of the rivalry in Jacksonville. Fans, especially the older stuffier fans with money, get real sketchy about deviating from tradition.
-Competitive Scheduling-
A) stick with me here because I know it’s a tough concept. 100% home field advantage every other year equates to a 50% advantage overall. This can be achieved by playing a game where the field is claimed by neither university and filled 50/50 between the fanbases split down the center. One could argue since you never know how your team will stack up against the opponent, a 50% neutral site is ideal most years.
B) A unique game with a lot of attention is great for recruiting. Why do you think LSU and Alabama often play marquee games to kickoff the season? They could schedule a 9th home game against directional state.
-Revenue-
A) Two Words- “reserve fund”
B)Considering all the evidence of greed presented over the years on this blog. If abandoning the game really meant increased revenue do you think they wouldn’t have already pulled the trigger?

I grew up in South Georgia, in Savannah, going to Jacksonville every year starting in 1992. I missed 94/95 when it was home and home (I was in 9th grade and had a XC meet for the 95 game in Athens). I went every year the game was in Jax from 1992-2006, including my time in Athens.
Haven’t been back since and have no desire to.
It get that to the generations older than me, that it is a tradition.
But to me (and a lot of people my age), it is stupid and it sucks. You get gouged for hotel/condos, the tailgating atmosphere sucks, and on Sunday, all those supposedly neutral people of Jacksonville put on their Gator gear and count our money.
To each their own, I’m just done and want home and home. I felt the exact same way when we won 3 in a row.

I don’t know about you, but what makes for great tailgating are the friends and fans I surround myself with. Jax is unique in that you’ve got a 50/50 mix of fans. I really enjoy that.
Tailgating in Athens hasn’t been the same since Adams got his hooks into it. And they know how to gouge visitors in Athens just as well as they do in Jacksonville. It’s the American Way.

I grew up in Savannah too, still live in the area.
I guess it’s just different strokes for different folks. I have season tickets and although I love Athens, I have always looked forward to Jacksonville because of the magnitude and uniqueness and of the game. I have lived in other parts of the country and have always been proud that Georgia is part of such a nationally recognized tradition.
I will concede that the area around the stadium is pretty crappy but it’s the equal and opposite hatred that makes the atmosphere, not the venue. I was born in 1987 so I mostly know heartache on I-95 but I can still appreciate the game for what it is and I just feel like a big part of that is where it is.
