Bewildered

So, we’ve reached the point where what was once a joking matter — Georgia being bowl ineligible for the first time in twenty years — is uncomfortably close to becoming a reality.  We’re being made to re-calibrate our expectations of what Georgia football is about.

I had no idea when Kirby came in to remake the culture of the program, it included me.  But after ten years of blogging, that’s where I find myself.

Ten years of this, and for the first time ever I’m not even angry over a(nother) disappointing loss.  Instead, I’m simply disinterested in how the rest of the 2016 season plays out.  I’m running on empty; player development and recruiting rankings are a poor substitute for the product on the field.  Go figure.

It’s too early for a postmortem about Kirby’s first season, so all that’s left is getting together with friends for a few more Saturdays to enjoy each other’s company.  Beyond that, I got nothin’.

Apologies in advance if I seem a bit detached for the next couple of months.

We can all dream about being a fly on the wall in McGoofys, Boneheads or the cathartic (athletic) associations offices hearing how they will spin our road to the 2018 National Championship. Perhaps Johnny Griffith is available to comment.

      It’s not working.

The only way this gets fixed is for the Athletic Board to throw Greg a retirement party and hire an AD who wil bring in his own experienced head coach.

Kirby Smart can then get hired by a non-P5 school and get the OJT necessary to become a successful head coach.

MD (Dawg fan for life), while the curiosity of watching your former HC was greater than watching your life long school/team, these observations must have been noticed in South Bend: deplorable OL, leads the nation in dropped passes & a defensive line/secondary that leak like a sive….ironic that those characteristics are common in both Coral Gables and Athens? I say no.

I agree, I wouldn’t call it ironic. While you could make a case to lay all of UGA’s woes at Richt’s feet, I don’t know that you could do the same with Miami given that he’s in his first year there. If anything, the common thread is coach Coley, who was OC/QB coach at Miami before being the WRs coach at UGA. Maybe the dropsies are an infectious disease, and Coley’s the carrier?

In any case, my disinterest in this year’s Georgia team stems from failure to achieve the goals I wanted them to. A criticism of Richt was that he had sufficient talent to win championships and underachieved with it, so I’d hoped to see Kirby at least maintain the same win-loss record. As of now, it’s mathematically impossible to reach 10 wins, and seems unlikely that we will reach 9. I would’ve liked to see us quit setting what I call “negative records”, such as giving a coach his first SEC road win (Derek Mason at Vanderbilt) or being held to the lowest total rushing yards against Florida since the 1930s. Apparently even that hope was too high.

This is so ridiculous. Richt’s Georgia receivers were not drop prone, neither were the defenses chronically bad. The OL have been a weakness, but mostly only the last few years, and even then our tailbacks were crushing it.

You can’t give CKS all the excuses for it being his first year with a new team and not extend them to Richt. Sheesh.

Senator, I reached that same point earlier this season after several years of ongoing disappointment and having more and more of my money sucked out by the Athletic Department with less and less enjoyment. During the Vandy game, my family and friends noted how calm I was after the loss and that in past years, I’d have been pissed for days. I’ve reached the point of indifference, which should be extremely scary for McGarity, etal.

Bad football is tough to watch. This team with some exceptions has gotten worse as the season has progressed. That’s not a good place to be if your job is to improve. People don’t pay the money and use their time to watch a rebuild that may or may not work out.

The program is not in a good place right now and hasn’t been for the last 24 months.

I’m with y’all. I used up my last bit of patience pulling for a coach I loved and wanted to see win at UGA more than anything, and while I accepted that it was time to move on after we did, I didn’t expect to be watching miserable, boring, losing football this season.

If the team was showing improvement or losing in exciting ways (Tennessee doesn’t count; they just lost to Carolina. Also, that beatdown in Oxford looks worse every week), I could live with it. This team isn’t exciting; they’re bad.

I’ve got two young kids and a busy weekends, and I’m not carving out any more time for this football team until the coaching staff starts getting some improvement out of them. At this point, though, I don’t think that’s happening. The most we can hope for is that Chubb and Michel both get out of here with no injuries and they go on and get paid in the NFL so we can hold up yet another bit of blown potential as part of The Georgia Way.

Look at the bright side. The program has not been in a good place for the last 5 years. Think Richt would be doing substantially better with this material? I doubt it. If things do not improve substantially next year, Smart will have to get rid of Cheney. He does not have the “Willy Martinez” factor in his favor. Next year Bobo will be canned and Smart can hire him. Every Dawg fan will be happy and that hiring may give Smart an extra year. Happy times are here again.

Agree about the apathy, but disagree with the lack of effort. I thought the players played hard for the entire game and many left it all on the field against a better team. The defense played well enough for us to win, but coaching and play calling/preparation again seemed to be lacking especially on offense.

  13. I’ll probably watch the game Saturday night only to see if the season falls into an abyss I thought I would never see again … 1990 (my last football season in Athens). I’ll go to Athens to watch the Auburn game to see if somehow we put together a 2006 type of game but am already prepared to for an epic beat down if Gus wants to do it. I’ve already given my tickets away to a friend for the last two games due to family commitments and now sort of glad I have.

This team desperately needs to get to 6 wins not just to keep the bowl streak alive but to get the extra practices for the underclassmen.

I don’t know if Kirby has lost the team. He certainly hasn’t seemed to have lost the defense. They went out there time and time again after 3 and outs and crappy punts to keep the game close. I think they have lost the team on offense. When you’re told consistently how badly you suck by your leadership, eventually, it wears on you. I saw Nick on the sidelines a couple of times on TV, and it looked like the young man was thinking, “I worked my @$$ off to come back for this?”

Well, I hate to draw too many comparisons.. but look what Muschamp did with less talent last night.

As for this year, my apathy is squarely in place, and I think this malaise extends from what we saw last couple of years.. so Kirby is the unfortunate recipient of a fanbase that has extended goodwill for a long time to the previous coach. We’re not patient any longer, and perhaps he deserves more time.. but it’s hard to give that when we see puzzling play on the field and suspect play calling. I’ll give Kirby this year, no matter how bad. But I have to say, it’s hard to see how we’re building toward a better team next year.

All good points, and I guess my frustration is, why are we not trying different things to accommodate it? People that know X’s and O’s a lot better than I do have been scratching their heads. Chaney is a good offensive mind, just based on his history alone. Is Kirby overriding him or is it really just not possible to create something with this O line. I tend to give coaches much more of the benefit of the doubt, because I don’t know what it’s like to do their job. It’s easy to say ‘why don’t you try this or that?”. Like I’ve said, I’ll give the team this year, but it’s hard to see how we’re making progress toward getting this team to gel for next year.

UF’s o-line last year was so bad they had to cancel the spring game due to not having enough lineman. I think 60% of his lineman on the fall roster were true freshman. At least our LT has 3-4 yrs of college football experience. The big difference was Muschamp left him a ton of talent on defense and McLewain was an OC, so he and Nusbaum tried to scheme around their problems. That will only get you so far as they found out down the stretch, but he got the most out of the players on hand.

Yep. Three of the five Florida starters last year were true freshman. And another was a transfer from a 1-AA school. Shoot, McElwain lost his starting QB and had to start one that makes Luke Del Rio look like Tom Brady. Yet he won the SEC East. That is an accomplishment, even as poor as the division was last year. This year it is also a bit of a dumpster fire. But some team has to win it.

I have been thinking a lot about this question of why my excitement level is lower. Part of it is whether you liked his coaching or not, CMR and to some degree CMB were like well-worn shoes, and if they were not expensive shoes they were comfortable and our favorite pair.

I was invested in the success of the program as always but I was also rooting for these nice guys and the mostly decent kids they seemed to surround themselves with. Part of it was access to the kids via interviews, feature stories, etc. I got a bit more invested in them because I knew their stories.

With Kirby basically doing his best to tell everyone he couldn’t care less what they think, the mood around the program has changed. They have a bunker mentality, “the process”, etc, and we’re surprised we don’t care more – well, it’s pretty corporate – and not much fun rooting for a corporation going to war vs your school playing football games.

In fairness, last year was joyless in its own way, even before the change. But don’t think it would have stayed that way.

There was a picture in the paper a few years back of Brandon Boykin leaping impossubly high into the air before a game like a frog. CMR was smiling nearby, iirc. They were both simply happy to be out there.

That spirit has been missing from the program for a couple years. I don’t feel quite as invested in these kids or coaches as I did in previous years, regardless of the w-l record, and I think it’s gotten worse under CKS.

    Rational or not.

No doubt, we’d be doing better with Richt right now than we’ve done so far, but the big question is are we taking a step back to move farther forward? That’s the difficult question. There is nothing about this ‘process’ so far that makes me feel like we’re building anything on the field. As for the ‘feels’ Winning will cure all ills, and restore joy. I just hope that’s where we’re headed and I just can’t see it.

Against a decent defensive front 7, they can neither run nor pass block. Until that problem is resolved (2 or more years?), the Dawgs won’t compete against the big boys. He’s working on it, and I think he will field strong teams in the near future. The other concern I have is his stance on not giving scholarships to kickers. The punting is very poor, and the placekicking highly questionable. He needs to revisit that thought process in my opinion.

Richt was terrible over the past several years against any team with a pulse. I believe the record was 5-17 in his last 22 games against SEC teams with an above .500 record in conference. It was time for him to go. That said, it was just plain stupid not to do an extensive search and just hire a guy who has been a lifetime assistant just because he’s a Georgia boy and he worked for Saban. This article summarizes it well: http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/story/georgias-loss-to-florida-is-more-evidence-of-regression-under-kirby-smart-102916

Say what you will about our roster deficiencies in certain areas, but that doesn’t excuse the poor job Kirby and his staff have done utiliziing the talent we do have, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Chaney’s play calling has been awful – two runs up the middle and then make Eason a sitting duck in obvious 3rd down passing situations. Our formations give away what we are doing most of the time.

Bainbridge Bubba has shown that he’s good at one thing to this point – excuse making. If it doesn’t get a whole better over the next couple of years, McGarity can take the train out of town with him.

Yeah, Richt had a less than desirable record against ranked teams his last 4 years, but he had great recruiting classes and had us playing in the SECCG during a 3rd of his tenure and in contention for SECCG in many others. I would take that over a do-over of the Goff/Donnan era any day. I agree, if it was really time to say good bye to CMR, then an extension search for a proven head coach should have ensued. I think UGA should have interviewed Herman and Fedora before settling on Smart. I don’t think it was a good hire and this season, with loads of talent, being pushed down the drain is the perfect example as to why.

I said it above, I’m find giving Kirby this year, no matter how bad it gets, including losing out and no bowl. But next year is a whole different story. My biggest question – is Eason really getting better? Will he be able to hit the field on opening day and be a legitimate weapon.

I think Eason is improving — I was certain he’d throw at least one terrible pick vs UF’s secondary, and it didn’t happen. Hell, the TD drive was all him improvising really. The problem is the play calling has not improved with him, and I have no idea what Colely does with the WRs but they’ve not improved either.

We hired the best O-line coach in the country; where’s the improvement? Chaney’s big fat ass is only concerned with vanilla plays. I don’t know what Tucker actually does, if anything. Even Chubb has a screw-it attitude. Only the place kicking seems to be getting better. Receivers can’t catch, and Eason is fighting for his life in every game. I’ll give Kirby his rookie season, but a coordinator and asst. coaching shakeup is needed.

Perhaps I could be described as Georgia Bulldog’s “ride or die” “bottom bitch.” 15-0 or 0-12, I’ll be there. I’ll watch the opening kickoff and the final play. I’ve seen “this one is forever” and home losses to Vandy. I’ve never wavered and will never waver. Bulldog born, bulldog bred and when I die I’ll be bulldog dead. I may get frustrated and I may get disgusted, but to become indifferent? Not gonna happen.

I used to let the losses ruin my life. Now I enjoy the wins and the losses almost never make it to Monday.

I don’t know whether we have a decent future with the current staff or not. It seems to me that we’re getting worse as the year progresses. That could be a result of good coaching taking advantage of a flawed team. Who knows?

I thought firing CMR was short-sighted and risky, but I have no interest in being proved right. I want to be proven badly wrong.

We’ve got a game in Lexington in 6 days. Let’s dust ourselves off and get win number 5.

The most surprising thing to me about this season isn’t the W-L record. It’s the fact that so many fans are apparently surprised by how bad we are. Our starting LT is a transfer from fucking Rhode Island. I’ll say that again: we’ve got a transfer from Rhode Island starting at LT in the SEC. And he’s the one responsible for protecting the blind side of a true freshman QB … in the SEC.

I’m not gonna sit here and say that I knew we’d struggle against Nicholls, or that we’d lose to Vanderbilt, etc. But I figured it was going to be rough this year. The writing was on the wall before the season began. With a true freshman QB leading the offense, we all knew everything was going to depend upon the OL (a) opening up holes for our talented RBs and (b) giving Eason time to see the field. But the Catalina transfer should’ve let us all know exactly how capable the new coaches thought our linemen were of doing those things. I just feel bad for Chubb and Michel.

At this point, the next couple seasons of Georgia football depend almost entirely upon (a) Kirby and Co’s ability to evaluate and recruit OL, and (b) Pittman’s ability to coach the young guys up. In the meantime, I’m just happy to have legitimate connections to other universities, so I’ve still got interesting games to watch.

If the O line was a known liability from August, does an average to good coach scheme around that? Again if it is a known fact why are 60% of the run calls relying on a known weakness? 6 will not block 8/9, yet here we are beyond week 7 n the season and we are still doing the same things and are saying we have a bad O line. Does not appears the current staff WANTS to gameplan around that, and are perfectly fine with using it for a repeated excuse. No formations to take numbers out of the box. Line play regressing. If you believe Pittman is an upgrade from Sales (I do) hard to believe he has not been able to develope one offensive line during the season to supplant a current starter.

      Like

      • Turd Ferguson

I don’t disagree with anything you say here. But I do think it’s important to distinguish Pittman’s role from Chaney’s. I’ve been critical of Chaney since day one, even after our win against UNC. I think the guy’s play-calling has been beyond awful for most of the season. Yes, there are ways to scheme around a shitty OL, to some degree. And for some dumb reason, he seems not to want to explore them for any more than a play or two per game. My guess is that, once the OL play improves, and Eason’s able to shine, Chaney’s going to look like a genius. But I’ll still think he’s an overrated hack whose inadequacies are being masked by a talented QB.

Pittman, on the other hand … I just keep telling myself that the hype around this man has got to be real, and that he really is one of the very best at his position in the business. Unlike Chaney, there seems to be no questioning Pittman’s track record. So, as long as his reputation is legit, then (a) our OL talent must be even worse than people like myself feared going into the season, and (b) he’ll need some time to build this thing essentially from scratch. The current crop of OL recruits looks pretty good. Hopefully, he can whip them into shape relatively quickly.

Pittman and McGee (based mostly on how good Herrien has looked) are really the only all-offense coaches who I’d want back. If Chaney and Coley sought other opportunities, I think that’d be best, even with a new learning curve.

Agree but Chaney and Pittman have worked together before so I do not understand the disconnection between them when it comes to an offensive game plan. Doesn’t at least 1 coach speak up and say, between the tackles has not worked for 7 weeks, let’s try something else.

I can only judge what happens on Saturday’s this season so Pittman must be using vacation time and/or has been allowed to throw n the towel because improvement is not apparent and 3 months of practice time has not resulted in a redshirt or true freshman to develope to the point he can overtake a current starter. You can talk no talent, but that give a coach a chance to prove their worth. There is not a P5 team (minus Bama) that starts all 4 or 5 star offensive lines. They all need coaching up.

What is surprising is that we returned 4 guys that started most of last year on OL minus John Theus, who was average at best and supposedly hired the best OL coach in football and the line has regressed? Maybe Pittman can only coach 6′ 6″ 350 pound guys that run 5.0 fortys. Just not sold on Chaney and doubtful about Pittman.

  27. The audacity of firing the UGA coach with the highest winning percentage at that stage in his career (thank you CMR Victory Watch) only makes sense in the context of a substantial upgrade. It is unfathomable that we would roll the dice on an untested coach without clear, compelling insider football knowledge that this was a strong step in the right direction. Therefore, I have to believe in the process: I didn’t realise the price-tag would be this high; apparently, re-wiring a culture, re-building a program, clearing out the cluttered mess left from the last regime takes time. But obviously it was necessary, and without doubt it is difficult. That’s why we’re so lucky to have CKS on board. 2019 will be the year!

If I’m honest, however, the cognitive dissonance thrust in my face by what I see on the field and watch on the television gives me pause. Surely we should have seen at least some marginal, measurable improvements eight games in? But alas: that is to doubt the process and the brain trust, and I simply cannot exist with that degree of pessimism. The thought that this is a journey to nowhere? Inconceivable! CKS is working on behind the scenes, internal, culture and concept stuff that will eventually manifest in improved play on the field and wins on the scoreboard. We have to take the long view. We’ll get there. Carthage wasn’t razed in a day!

I can’t make up my mind whether this team has quit on its coaches or if it even matters at this point. The offense is so woeful IMO there’s not a play caller or scheme out there that can fix it. It’s not an SEC caliber unit. Panic or knee-jerk will not help the program. All we can do is see how coaches respond to current adversity and how they’ll begin to weed the non-hackers out of the program.

I was bewildered last year. We had the worst ten-win team I’ve ever seen and the coaching staff was a dysfunctional mess. The Dawgs were really, really bad in their losses and barely squeaked by mediocre teams in many of their wins. But, I admit to being deluded by the W-L record. I assumed Smart & Co. would be able to duplicate last year’s win total while hopefully improving the things in the program that needed improving. But, this season has made it clear that this team has severe talent deficiencies. Particularly on OL, we’re now bad enough that we can’t eke out the wins we could last year. I don’t think there’s a lack of player effort or buy-in, and I’ll give the coaching staff time before I deem them incompetent, but this team just isn’t very good.

None of this has made me indifferent. I’m still paying attention and almost certainly always will. However, a few years ago (I’m pretty sure after the pathetic loss to Colorado) I decided that I just couldn’t invest myself emotionally in a dozen kids running into each other on a grassy field the way I had been. I don’t scream and holler at the TV anymore and I’ve done a pretty good job not letting losses (or ugly wins) ruin the rest of my weekend. It still bothers me when we lose, but I’m trying to keep things – my life in general, the fact football is just a form of entertainment, etc. – in perspective. That perspective will be a happier one when the Dawgs become a championship contender again, but I’m not going to let the results – good or bad – rule my existence.

Kirby’s first mistake was allowing Saban to use him to get another national title. That put him behind in recruiting. He is still behind. Can he get ahead?
Yes. But he needs to project better. First his wife needs to clean up her man. He looks like a coach on grade school. Plus he is a very poor communicator to the public. Listen to that interview with Chuck Dowdle post game. But then Dowdle is another north Georgia geek. Kirby is not Saban. Saban has that persona and can recruit. Saban does not piss around. He looks like leadership.
Close the open door recruiting by other programs into Georgia. Build a damn fire wall. Bing Dukes at Auburn. Jarrad Davis at Florida. Davis crushed the oline all day. He is from Georgia. He wanted to come to UGA.
Look at the current roster. I have posted about the center position prior and during this season. They list a center who is under 275 pounds. Look down that oline position list. There are some young players there with size. Where is the development of these players by the offensive staff and Pittman in particular. You see other programs playing freshman. What has been going on with this staff for 10 months?
The oline is a huge problem. It should be and must be the top recruiting position. And I am not talking about 3 or 4 I mean 7 or 8. Get them in and prevent other schools from having them. Then in a game you can sub more often and get physical in games.
Evaluate if the coaching abilities of the entire offensive staff. The interior line and tight ends can not get into position quick enough and can not sustain blocks well. The running backs are very poor in blocking. They do not want to. Think back to Isiah Crowell. His high school coach is the running back coach. Again the Saban hold on Smart from December thru January hurt Smart in fully evaluating his staff and them being put on contract. Do not hesitate to cut ties now and at end of season.
Chaney is a poor OC. He has that history. Get out of this old days offense.
You can control a game via the score board if your offense is built to put up the points and your defense can bend but not break.
The history of the Georgia defense. How can you shut someone down on first and second downs and then let them wiggle off on third down. This happened under Richt and now Smart. One thing Vandy and Florida did was make third down plays efficiently. Even if the defense is put in short field, opponents 40 to 50. Shut them down and force bad punts. Where is Beamer and Tucker? There is no speed in pass rush and rushing kicks.
Other than depth and size Georgia is a slow team thru out the roster. It is not quick and it is not fast. I do not think these guys run enough in their conditioning and off season.
Give up going to Jacksonville. It only benefits the state of Florida and UF. Keep that money in Georgia and Athens and UGA.
Uniforms. Same cloth for half a century. Dooley made a change when he came in. Find a damn designer and get some changes. While at it does some work on Chaney and Smart.
4-4. Well, Smart we think it is worst than that looking down the road. You have some players and assets. But man you are wasting them. I would get rid of your football operations head, Mike Cavan.

I think Ben, and Cosmic, above most closely reflect where I am. I understood the sentiment that after 15 years you sometimes need fresh thinking and re-energizing in a business/program. I mostly hated the divisiveness and bitterness that many brought to that desire for change, and I really hated the way it was handled and the lies we were told (decision riding home from ATL, and search committee). But change was coming either way. I found the hire especially risky when there were superior options available but everyone loves a coming home story and hey, the last coordinator hire worked damned well for us.

So I supported Kirby and took some comfort in the new energy, especially in recruiting, and the opportunity to be proven wrong about his selection. And I still hope it turns out well, but UGA was not a dumpster fire/reclamation project, so I didn’t expect this level of fall off before progress is seen. Yesterday was unsettling because I truly expected to see what changes would be brought to an offense that was in serious need of a makeover. It was pretty shocking to see almost the exact same thing we saw earlier in the season on offense. We have Nick fricking Chubb and Sony Michel, along with other offensive talent and we have 93 combined rushing yards on 56 carries in the last two games combined. And yesterday we had no first downs via the rush, none, That may be mathematically possible, but on the field of play I don’t think it can ever be duplicated.

So yes, I am in that apathetic group until there is some reason to be re-engaged. I will watch the games, but will flip back and forth to better alternatives and not record the UGA game for “further review”. The passionate fans on this blog will do something similar, at least most will. We cannot just drop this love of our life and not stay in touch. But I do think there is a real concern that some will reduce their involvement for a while, but will never return to the level we have been at in terms of emotional commitment. As someone said above, it is very dangerous to allow your supporters to find out there are other things to do with your time and money. That is what BM should be worrying about, you never get all the children back in the fold once they have gotten a taste of other life style opportunities.

I was also told that our new coach would import the “the process” end we would be on our way. Did the entire program need to be blown up to get there? If Georgia had a kicking game and a defense that can stop teams on third down they could have stopped UF yesterday.
Florida is an average team on offense. The defense wanted to stop the running game, and they did at times. But they allowed the QB make plays in the passing game. This team can not rush a passer. And the secondary is not a consistent shut down one.
Currently this Florida team is not the passing teams under Spurrier, but yesterday they looked like it at times.
Young defense. But it needs to get up some more speed.
It coupled with the kicking game is not good in game situations.
No doubt the oline and kicking game have hurt this team all year. It will not get better by year end.
    That is very troubling.

UGA would end up @ #42 in ranking overall.

What’s interesting is UGA ranks in ESPN FPI:
    Off #72, Def #23 Sp Team #125

    UF ranks:
    Off #69, Def #3, Sp Team #76

If the def becomes a top 5 defense in 2017, and sp teams improve to @ #75,
even if the offense stays around #69, looking at a top 10 team.

UF has been @70 ranked offense for 2 years, average to below average special teams,
but the defense has been top 11 in 2015, and top 3 in 2016.

That is the most realistic blueprint for Kirby, focus on defense, improve special teams.

FPI is much higher on us than S&P+ which has close losses to NATS and UK..and not even cracking 40 points in the win over ULL.

TonyQBR – you need to submit to random drug testing. The same OL issues everyone bitches about this year aren’t getting any better next year. We’ll have a new LT that will likely be a true FR or Div II transfer plus the incoming Pittman FR recruits, but it’s essentially the same offense/OL less Chubb and Sony who will likely leave for the NFL. The 1-2 last minute OL signees Pittman “found” haven’t even come close to seeing any real playing time this year. Our defense, while improving, isn’t anywhere close to being on par with Florida or Bama plus the same ST key guys return. Not to mention we’ll have the same core coaching staff with 1 year of experience. Using your statistical logic, if my aunt had balls, she’d be my uncle.

Here’s my thinking on how UGA vaults from #42 to a top 10 in 1 year:

1- Offense: WR’s will be bigger & better next year. That will stretch the field and open up the run.
OLine can’t be worse than this year’s. I am not counting on a lot of improvement, just @ #70 ranked offense.
3- Special teams will get a ton of attention in the offseason and get much much better. I am hoping
the team improves from #125 to #75 or even #100 like UF was last year.
4- I am pretty damn sure the defense will be a top 10 defense in year 2 of Kirby’s scheme. it almost always is
under Kirby, as hie’s the best DC in the nation.

I want to see Off ranked #70, def top 10, special teams 75-100. Very do-able.

UF has done that formula the last 2 years, Kirby is a better defensive mind than anyone over there.

The UGA page S & P+ has not been updated on their site since 10/24 so your info is outdated.

  59. Wait? You mean we couldn’t put up points against one of the best defenses in the country with a true freshman qb and our worse offensive line in 20 years? No shit…..

With one more loss I think Will Trane will start typing in all caps again.

This week was my first on a new job, one that requires me to work Saturday afternoons. It says a lot about this football season that instead of passing on the opportunity I saw a mild positive in the fact that I would have a solid excuse to not be watching the Jacksonville game.

They’re still my team, and I’m still a fan, but in the last two years that’s become more about which t-shirt I wear than what I look forward to on weekends in the fall. (And my t-shirts are getting older – I haven’t bought a new one for some time.)

So Senator, I can relate to your feelings.

If they beat Auburn I’ll still enjoy it… but I’ve got zero expectations that it’ll happen.

Not going to beat Auburn, they got a top 10 offense and defense and special teams is much better too.

      Give up that dream.

Could win the other 3 games left though.

Glad you feel that way. I don’t see us becoming bowl eligible. Kentucky destroyed a Missouri team that we beat with a last second miracle. Auburn will humiliate us much like they did on the second half against Ole Miss. And Tech ran all over Vandy, who beat us at our homecoming.

Careful with the transitive look on Missouri. When we played them, they didn’t know that they sucked. We didn’t know that we sucked either. At the time that game could have easily been between the two best teams in the east.

You’re right, of course. The transitive always comes back to bite the prognosticator.

But the product we’re putting on the field just looks so bad right now….

Already thinking about the hit I am going to take selling my season tickets next year.

I can’t pull the trigger on dropping them, but I can’t imagine going to the games either.
