… but that effing Open Records law is hitting on all cylinders.
The University of Georgia is taking full advantage of the new open records law for athletics passed by state legislators after football coach Kirby Smart discussed with them the “difference” in play at his new program with competitors…
Among information requested the school’s Division of Marketing & Communications has not responded to yet under the new law except to acknowledge receipt of the request:
• A Sept. 5 request for the latest multimedia rights deal for Georgia athletics with IMG College and JMI Sports. The Sports Business Journal reported the school signed a 10-year contract. Georgia would not provide the financial arrangement of the deal that runs through 2026 without going through open records. The school made an average of $11 million a year under the previous contract.
• An Aug. 13 request for any communication about Alabama football graduate transfer Maurice Smith with the Southeastern Conference, Alabama or Smith and/or his family. In a much-publicized case, the SEC granted a waiver for Smith to play immediately for Georgia. He is a starting defensive back.
• A July 5 request for the amount of money Georgia spent to recruit College of Southern Idaho basketball transfer Pape Diatta who signed with the school. Assistant coach Jonas Hayes travelled to Senegal to visit the player’s mother. Asked in October if he could estimate how much a trip like that cost, head men’s basketball coach Mark Fox said: “I’m going to guess it probably cost $1,500. He just flew there. I think he did get a hotel room just to take a shower but he was only there, not even for 24 hours.”
My only question is where is the national championship Casey Cagle promised us when the bill passed. I mean, they’re winning, aren’t they?

I don’t really consider any of that as “sports” reporting. This is possible ammo for the talking heads of radio to prattle on about. Next ajc sports headline: “UGA gets paid lots of money for football”. And beancounters everywhere may find the details fascinating. But I fail to see what the hubbub is about. Sure, I’m against the 90 day law. Call me when there’s something mildly important.

The only thing there that is remotely important is the multimedia rights details, and they will be found out in due course. Certainly no emergency matter. I am not sure what the deal is with Maurice Smith – they thinking a gun was held to Nick Saban’s head? Communication between UGA and Bama? I can’t imagine anything being of interest that hasn’t already been reported.
Here’s the thing about the law and championships: CKS can’t say he didn’t get what he wanted, and can’t blame the lack of a championship on not having a little protection. I just hope we can be bowl eligible this season. And it’s not like the papers don’t have anything to write about; they can complain about the law. Yawn.

I’ll bet Maurice Smith is really thrilled he transferred to Georgia now. He would likely have been the starter or at worst the 5th DB playing on a D that uses 5 DBs a lot at Bama. He probably will drop completely off the board when he likely would have been a middle rounds pick in the NFL draft. He will be lucky if he gets a shot at pro ball at all now.

I don’t agree. The NFL scouts couldn’t care less about the win/loss record of the prospect’s teams.

Except the multimedia rights/IMG deal. Don’t know how they’ll dodge that except to delay it as long as possible. If it comes out way to UGA’s benefit, who complains? Hell, who complains if it’s piteous? I understand how important this stuff is, but to most people, it’s the most “inside baseball” thing ever, and that’s a damn shame.

Actually we need both. If I want the full scoop i have to go to multiple outlets to figure out what is going on. So if I watch CNN, I need to go to Fox to see what I’m missing and vice versa. The ability of the our mainstream print and tv news outlets to ignore stories they are not comfortable with is disturbing. Add to that the fact that the HRC campaign had so much editorial control over what was printed and how it was presented. Either way, the American people will be the losers in this election.
I really wish the Dawgs were kicking ass right now so I could have a positive distraction from this mess.

O-line and special teams.
After 8 games I have yet to figured out why Chaney, Pittman, Smart, and Tucker have not come to some conclusion on the offense.
Smart and Tucker defended the o-line last season on the opposing sideline.
Now one would think Smart and Tucker would have brought the OC up to speed on defending the dawgs running game. Bama laid down the template last year.
What we have learned so far is there is a talent deficiency.
The other thing we have learned if the OC keeps making the same mistakes game planning and play calling, guess what. The same mistake. Another loss
Suggest you get some Kentucky bourbon ready Saturday night.
Have a feeling a lot of alums willneed it.
Thank goodness high school football is going on and playoffs are starting.
Go to Houston County and VHS play. Fromm will be tested.
