Georgia’s offensive scheme: a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma

Seth Emerson hits on what’s puzzled me about Jim Chaney all season long:

[Georgia] has great runners in Chubb and Michel, but it doesn’t have the line, and it doesn’t have a quarterback comfortable enough running that system. I keep coming back to the Tennessee game, which Georgia needed to win to stay in the division race, and when – to quote myself in the Second Glance – “Jim Chaney finally adapted, scheming around the offensive line problems. He ran outside a lot, was creative, and used a lot of runs out of the shot-gun, which Eason is more comfortable running at this point.”

Since then, it’s been basically back to the usual. And while it worked against South Carolina, it didn’t the next two weeks. Why is that? Are Smart and/or Chaney committed to a certain style, and they’re hammering it into Eason and the team, assuming after the Tennessee loss that the division hopes were over, thus sacrificing the present for the future? That seems unlikely, but it’s hard to come up with another explanation, other than they (for some reason) think this is the best gameplan.

Occam’s Razor would seem to suggest such, given that Chaney, while no offensive genius, has shown at prior stops that he can be a competent college coordinator.

The offensive line is sub-par, but there’s enough talent on offense to scheme around that shortcoming, as major as it is, at least against defenses that aren’t top-flight.  What’s troublesome are the games where it appears the staff doesn’t even try to do so.

The razor points to the quality of the rush defense across the line of scrimmage.

Nationally. Florida is #9 and Vanderbilt is #60.

South Carolina is #95 and Tennessee is #101.

Kentucky is #89 so I expect the running game to be more productive tomorrow night.

This is what has killed me too. They are clearly capable of scheming around our deficiencies pretty well and of effective playcalling, yet for some reason THEY GO LONG STRETCHES OF DOING THE OPPOSITE. Even during the Vandy game, there was a stretch of good, successful playcalls, then all momentum taken away by a long period of run up the middle, run up the middle, pass, punt. Same thing against Florida – thought the offense was looking pretty good then most of the 2nd and 3rd quarters were back to the ole run run pass punt. After all those stretches your defense gets tired and the offense loses momentum/confidence and the game feels over.

That also requires good coaching and play calling. The Falcons have done so.

    • There is just one, small problem with your logic where UGA’s future OL performance is concerned; our offensive line has performed terribly this year, with absolutely no semblance of improvement since the first game. In fact, they have arguably regressed since September 3rd.
Combine this with the fact that apparently there is no one on the bench that the staff can bring in to improve the condition of this discombobulated train wreck, and we can anticipate a 2017 season where we’ll have virtually no one with playing experience to step in and be penciled in as a starter.
Furthermore, even if we hold onto the stellar group of OL recruits expected for the class of ’17, we’ll be lining up next September with another bunch of freshmen and inexperienced RS freshmen. That is disconcerting to say the least.
So, unless the incoming class of linemen are otherworldly good, we may have to suffer through another season just like this one, especially if Chaney continues to refuse to adapt and play to the strength of our available personnel.
One final thing…we had better improve dramatically at the WR position. Somebody on the coaching staff needs to do a better job of teaching these kids how to run better routes and learn how to separate from man coverage and get open, dammit!
In a nutshell… Chaney, Pittman, and Coley better start earning those salaries they’re getting. Right now, I’d say they owe us a refund.
      GO DAWGS!

It isn’t just the Offense — and not just the Special Teams. We are not looking good in any aspect of the game. (Hint: We were 2nd last year and this year we are 116th)

A very good summary. What good will the new OL recruits do if this is an example of Pittman’s ability to coach. If he coaches better, then Chaney schemes the offense better, result: Georgia wins. But it begins with Pittman and his OL.

Make no mistake, sacrificing this season will affect recruiting. It will also lose some of the good will from fans Kirby has right now. He may need that good will if there are unexpected rough patches in the future. Very short-sighted decision. Great coaches make silk purses out of sow’s ears while ordering swathes of silk from the orient.

Firstly, you’re giving way too much credence to speculation about the mindset of the coaches. Secondly, there’s no indication that Georgia’s lackluster play so far has affected recruiting negatively at all.

Would add that Pittman’s decision to stick with same personnel could only be interpreted as sending a message to 2017 o line recruits that we need help… the Catalina/Wilson show. However, with bowl practices in jeopardy I am curious to see if we see any changes.. ie Seth’s comments as well as personnel.

There are no questions about Chubb or Michel’s speed.
All one needs to do is examine their high school track accomplishments.
Chubb and Michel, and before them Todd Gurley, were all state record holders and possess sprinters speed.
Genuine 4.3 – 4.4 guys are first and foremost, extremely rare, and especially so at the RB position. Realistically, most are in the 4.5 – 4.6 range but excel in areas that require superior “game speed”.
Poor blocking is the reason for our RB’s getting bottled up and tackled for losses or minimal gains, period.
      “No outside running speed”?
Take a look at the game footage from 2014 and 2015 prior to Chubb’s injury in the cow pasture called Neyland Stadium. 90% of their big runs, especially in the case of Nick Chubb, were outside the tackles, mostly with toss sweeps. (A fact apparently lost on Jim Chaney)
Both Chubb and Michel possess the ability to take it to the house on any given play. One being a bruiser, the other a master of the juke, yet both capable of ending their runs in the opponents end zone.
In order for them to do that however, they need to have at least a small hole in the defense created by the offensive line. For the majority of this season, that has been something this OL has been unable to do.

I’m not sure any OC can scheme around an OLine this bad short of a quick passing game out of the shotgun and the receivers don’t seem up to that.

    Like

You can to some extent. They would have probably beaten Vandy if they’d just spread them out and leaned on the passing game. Against anyone with a competent defensive line, they’re going to have issues no matter what they do. And with Florida’s talent in the secondary, I don’t think there was a gameplan that was going to be effective last week.

true. WR’s are too many drops, WR starters are too small, TE’s are being used to block because the oline’s so small. And the Qb can’t hit the broadside of barn as far as accuracy goes. RB’s don’t do basic stuff to elude tacklers like spins, stiff arms, jump cuts, etc. Oline is too small. It’s a total disaster.

      Like

O line is not too small…it’s just Pittman needs 6-6, 350# to operate. Check out many of the sucessful OL in Power 5 schools. It’s not the end all of football success. Technique, ferocity, guts..will go a long way in beating the other guy…unless he possesses more of the same.

Exactly. If we are talking a road-grader type OL, then we are lacking. If you are talking similar talent that most CFB teams have, we can match up with that. Saying it again, there isn’t that much less talent than we had last season (Theus primarily), we just aren’t getting it done nearly as well. UGA hasn’t had a strong OL since 2002, but ewe have never been shit down like this. They aren’t just lacking technique this year, we don’t know who to block, defenders are meeting at backs near the exchange point. That is why you see a back as stzrong as Chubb stymied, he never gets a full step or two before the defender is on him.

Chaney’s in a pickle. Now even really bad run defenses like Missouri can stack the line and stop the run. Look for lots of 8 man fronts in the last 4 games. That’s what people do against inexperienced rookie qb’s.

Remember 2010? It was brutal, in 6 of our 7 losses in 2010 people just jammed the line and dared a rookie qb to beat them.

What if Lambert playing guaranteed us to win out. Who would sign up for that? If you are not willing to, then the rest is mute…
The reality of this year is our coaches have chosen to roll the dice by starting Eason over Lambert. I have no doubt that we win more games this year if Lambert was our starting QB, but if you go back to the beginning, the masses would have burned Athens to the ground if Eason does not play. Well…………

Lambert is 11-2 as a starter and has sat the bench during the last 4 out of 5 game losses. Not even 1 attempt. Hard to imagine. But help is on the way in Jake Fromm next year, he can throw as well as Eason and he is tons more mobile. Have a feeling the Jacob Eason experiment is about over, let’s face it, he’s had a few good throws, but overall, he’s been a huge disappointment.

      Like

      • ApalachDawg

Dude he threw a pass that won the game in Missouri. He threw a pass that should have been the game winner against Title IX-ville. I don’t think those should be classified as just a ‘few good throws’ for a freshman QB or any age QB for that matter…
His receivers have had many, many drops with throws that have bounced off their stone hands in some key situations. I appreciate Lambert’s service to the Dawgs but going with Eason was the way to go.
Now the competition with Fromm should be interesting but I expect Eason to only get bettah with his trail by fire this season.

Not fair. While Lambert got the Start against UNC Eason entered the game relatively soon thereafter and played almost the whole game. He should get credit for the UNC win, not Lambert. Also, Eason threw the winning TD pass in the UT game and Kirby Stupid then blew the win with end-of-game screwups similar to his predecessor.

      • dantheman

The win over NC wasn’t bad as Lambert did start game 1. Team just plays better, and Chubb and Michel put up much better numbers with Lambert in game 1 as the starter and last season with Lambert, I guess he checks into plays better, and his accuracy kept defenses honest. Not the case with rookie Eason.

But I don’t think winning is Kirby’s goal in 2016, I feel he’s intentionally trying to lose games, to make his next season easier, otherwise you go with Lambert, and it’s really not close.

Eason, a true freshman, has not cost us a game this season.
None of the five picks he’s thrown have been the determining factor in the outcome of any game this year.
Would Lambert have made some the throws that Eason has completed? How about that toss to Ridley with 10 seconds to play vs. UT?
What about that roll out to the left that resulted in a completion to Ridley for a TD in Jacksonville?
The 4th and 10 TD completion to McKenzie at Mizzou?
      No… Hell no.
Lambert could have done nothing to help this team win more this year, especially with horrific OL play this year. Mr. Mobility might have been hospitalized by now.
Eason is a far superior talent. His numbers this year, even with the new staff constantly running this thing off in a ditch, are way better than Stafford’s numbers in 2006, and I’m pretty sure he went on to become the overall # 1 pick in the 2009 NFL draft.
Lambert is probably better suited to coaching HS football somewhere, like maybe his home town of Jesup. At least I hope so. He a great young man, but it is questionable whether an NFL career is in the cards for him.

Well, we see how that’s playing out. The o line can only be better next season than what we are currently witnessing.

This has had me perplexed, too. At least against decent to good defenses, the OL has looked so bad that I’m not sure it’s mattered what the play call was. But, I’m still finding it hard to (admit the obvious and) believe it’s so bad it can’t even block an FCS team.

No doubt related, it appears that our freshman QB is having a hard time reading defenses, which can’t be helping matters. The O probably would be operating more efficiently under Lambert, not that it would be very good then, either.

But, as frustrating as it is for us fans, I understand why the coaching staff would rather sacrifice this season to break in Eason than win maybe two more not very meaningful games with someone who’s not the future of the program.

    • dantheman

Yep. And to think the decision to go with a true freshman Qb full time? Even in 2010, I don’t think we had a true freshman at Qb, think he redshirted 2009, so he had a year in the system and went 6-7 in his first season. Eason looks to go maybe 5-7. It was a mistake in hindsight, but who knew he was this bad? The idea that you go with a rookie qb over a dude with a 10-2 record as a starter in Lambert, and that Chubb & Michel could just run through 8 man fronts with the smallest oline and receivers we’ve seen in forever, was stupid and cost the whole season. Can’t run inside because we have the smallest oline, can’t run outside cuz we got the smallest receivers. Can’t throw or audible to the right play cuz we got a rookie Qb who’s clueless. It’s ugly.

Kirby said it a few weeks ago, and while I’ve mocked it, it seems to be very true…he cares more how they practice than how they play. Guess he’s devoted this year to #theprocess and wants to see that attitude (physical and mental toughness) instilled before he worries about the record. If true, then I would just wish:

    A) tell us fans more…we do pay the bills and his salary, so chill the press conference attitude or at least give an interview to Loran Dowdle to gush about the long term plan so we’re not all guessing.

    B) show some progress. Bench the ones not buying in and really get his own players in place unless he’s trying to stockpile some talent with just “practice” experience.

    C) that this will work. I’m not buying we can become Bama 2.0. I’m not sure Bama will be “Bama” for much longer as they are evolving quickly. I’d like to see us a step ahead, not following.

And yes…I would have enjoyed more Lambert and 2 more wins with Eason getting some playing time vs. this mess, but whatev’s.

36 years and counting…UGA the new Cubs of CFB.

Kirby is installing the begging of his program. It is going to be (in his mind at least) a physically dominating program. Smashmouth a la Bama. Some of us (me) think that trying to play smashmouth with a finesse team and losing is stupid–a good coach gets the most out of the players he has. After all, the object is to win the game, isn’t it? Others admire the guy for sticking to his guns. If this leads to a dominating UGA team in a couple of more seasons I will be the first to say I was wrong and congratulate Kirby on his successful transition. I sincerely hope he is right.

Dawgman (great name BTW) I think you are absolutely right. The mental side of smash mouth must be achieved before the physical side or it won’t work. I expect just about every starting O-Lineman next season to be a different player. When Saban showed up in T-town in ’07 he played players that were there. He had to. Some of those players were actually pretty good. But the next season almost every player was someone new.

  24. I think we’ve fallen into an emotional pit. We need a pick me up. We should have a new caption contest for the offense. For example, if UGA’s offense was a smell, it would be “three-day-old, liquor and seafood vomit.” If Jim Chaney’s play calls were a food, they would be “I don’t know, the same shit you ate yesterday.” Creativity is a safe outlet that we should explore. It helps to get out all the angst that’s been suffocating our fan base for the last three years, and it helps if everyone can get a chuckle out of it. Relax. Don’t take it all so seriously. Poke fun while the poking is good. And, when we lose to Kentucky, you will have already given your very last fuck about it all, so it won’t matter.

Kirby (or Goff 2.0/Muschamp 2.0) is to be trusted because he has served as the hand maiden of the great one to the west. You need to look no further than to this years Alabama team to know that in the swap of Pruitt for Kirby Alabama won as usual. Our defense while trying hard to get buttah has lost the UT game and the Vandy game. I realize that the special teams suck but when these games were on the line our defense could not stop UT or Vandy. I know that I’m a pessimist because I’m a Dooley Dawg but Kirby has made this season a nightmare and I’m not sure recruiting well will change it. The kids that want to go to Bama are going to Bama, we will get the kids that Nick doesn’t care about. As long as Saban is at Bama he has a 90% chance of winning the SECC. Jimmies and Joes vs Xs and Os.

Though it seems weird to think that keeping the X’s and O’s part the same and making a marginal adjustment in the Jimmies and Joes would result in significant improvement in the efficiency?

If Cam Robinson was playing LT in Athens, how good would this team be if they had run the exact same plays?

The drops, the punts, the fumbles, penalties, and everything is the same except instead of the transfer from RI that everyone points to we have Cam Robinson.

I just dont think that there are huge gains to make in the jimmies and joes department. There were some big gains to make in the Xs and Os department.

If we had Cam Robinson at LT instead of Catlina, we would be leading the East right now. Absolutely, positively, zero question in my mind. Because he’d make the left guard better. And the center better. And the right guard. And the right tackle. And the RBs. And the QB. And the WRs. And the punting situation. The whole performance would be better because we would be able to run the ball better. That would open up the play action game, as well as improve pass pro. Would free up TEs to go on pass routes. Would result in more first downs (and less punts). More sustained drives would equal less stress on the young defense. The only areas I could think of that your swap scenario wouldn’t have an impact would be kickoff return and punt return.

I mean, honestly, a sure fire first round pick would not fix all of our warts, but it dang sure would be a giant ass band aid. To argue otherwise is just foolish.

You missed the point. Switching the LT doesnt change the play calling. The thought exercise was about improving the players but not the coaches. The idea that the coaches are calling what they think are the absolute best plays right now and that the only thing stopping these same set of plays from dominating the east is the players executing them.

So yeah if we had better players and ran better plays, we would be better…that really isnt much of a thought exercise.

White Kirbyvisors are very difficult to find. Red ones are out there, even black ones, but white? Not so much. You gotta really want one…Athens?

I am consulting the entrails of a goat to determine if the colors matter so much as the thought.

I’ll point it out again. Our Red Zone Defense is 116th this year. 92% of the time an offense is in the red zone, they come away with points. 73% of the time they come away with touchdowns (120th in the country). We can whine all we want on how the offensive line is terrible but if the defense forces field goals instead of touchdowns, we are in much better shape to not have to change out of the game plan.

There’s no enigma. Our run blocking is equally as lousy as our pass blocking. That applies to starters and backups, experienced lettermen and promising freshmen. Same goes for our receivers. Same goes for the special teams. It reflects terrible coaching by a few assistant coaches.

We’ve seen awful assistant coaches before – and the havoc they can wreak on an otherwise good team. Eason and Lakatos come immediately to mind. And as we’re painfully aware right now, just a couple rotten apples can and will crash a season. We all assumed Kirby was going to be detail oriented. But he fucked up by not being more selective with some of his hires. If he keeps some of these underperforming assistants on staff in 2017 it’s going to compound the mistake.

The bad hires were as a direct result of Kirby staying with Bama throughout the playoff instead of assuming the role of UGA HC when he got the call. The delay caused the pool of assistants to be dried up when Kirby finally got around to doing his Georgia job. I blame Kirby for this primarily but I also blame McIdiot for agreeing to such an arrangement. And as usual Georgia takes a back seat to Bama in all things.

I know others have hit it on this but the lack of screen passes or running plays designed to go outside of the tackles drives me insane. Can an offensive coordinator be charged with negligence for their misuse of Chubb and Michel?
