Coming home, with beer experience

A former B-Mer is returning to Athens.

Josh Brooks is returning to Georgia for a high-level job in the athletic department.

Two and a half years after leaving the school, Brooks is on the way back to become executive associate athletic director and chief operating officer. He has resigned as deputy athletic director at Louisiana-Monroe to take the UGA position, according to the Monroe News Star and NBC10news.net.

He brings with him an interesting entry on his updated resume.

He was hired away from Georgia to become athletic director at Division III Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., where he drew attention to the school by adding a beer garden and kids’ zone to home football games.

What’s that… “beer garden”, you say?  Hmmm.  My first thought is that nobody’s gonna care.  Then again, if McGarity can hit up contributors for the cost of the improvements like he has the IPF and baseball stadium, what’s the downside to picking up a new revenue stream with no upfront expense?  And that’s before you even get into the bidding for naming rights…

“Welcome to the Marquis ‘Mudcat’ Elmore Beer Garden at Sanford Stadium” has such a nice ring to it…

Imagine a beer garden that allows return access to the stadium with large corporate tents full of beer, food, and shmoozing.

    • It’s also an attractive option for the school, in that alcohol consumption can be limited to that area.

Well, if they actually follow through on moving the locker room and supposed recruiting area to the West endzone, there will be a whole lot of space that just conveniently opened up at field level…

I guess we got our guy to square away the GDay 93K concert, lol. A Beer Garden might be a hit with Young Alumni and Upper Class Students, especially at Noon Kickoffs.

I live close to Millsaps with lots of in-laws and friends that went there. This was perfect timing for the school plus help out the local economy a little. The laws had just changed allowing higher alcohol beers in the State, which also allowed local micro/craft breweries to spring up. Throw in an incentive to get a lagging, younger alumni base to come back and drop some dollars on local brews and the school, it was win/win.

Mostly useless info– MIke Dubose briefly coached at Millsaps post-Bama days dominating the conference, and a stones throw away at Belhaven College is Hal Mumme setting offensive records left and right. Lives next to a friend and says really cool guy to hang out with.

And now back to pre-turkey day billing hours….

As long as all the barmaids are dressed in authentic Octoberfest garb and each beer holds about a liter. You know to stay authentic and all. What could possibly go wrong?

So UGA can’t sell a cold drink on a hot day, but we have 1 AD, 1 deputy AD, and 3 executive associate AD’s?

Do we have an assistant to the regional manager AD?

Does anyone know if Brooks actually managed to sell cold beer?

I was thinking the same thing DP – between hiring Van Gorder as an analyst and creating a position for Brooks, we can’t spend that UGA Hartman Fund money fast enough on staff. Guess they’re taking a draw on the revenue bump from the ticket and contribution increases next year;-)

I don’t mind coughing up money for results, but I sure as hell don’t want to have to wait until 2018 or 2019 to see what all the increased spending means in wins and losses on the field.

Speaking of the Hartman Fund, has anyone heard or seen anything regarding the away game donation/ticket levels for next year? I’m real interested in the ND requirements.

I’ve rented a house through “rent like a champion” but am not even sure I’ll get tickets through the school. The secondary market is going to be rough…

I am just blown away at all the money being spent when not too long ago our head coach was paying money out of his own pocket because the school would not pony up like it should.
