Game day thread, old habits die hard edition

The last day of the regular season is always a bittersweet experience for me, especially when it’s a home game.  Ten months until the next Athens tailgate, until the crowd gathers in Sanford Stadium, until we get to enjoy the collective experience of Georgia football again.  That always leaves me a little sad.

Then again, we always have Georgia Tech.  And for the past fifteen years, that’s been a great thing to have.  Chan Gailey.  Reggie Ball.  Shutting down Calvin Johnson.  Running the state.  It’s a long list.

Kirby, keep things rolling.  I’d like to be typing TIAR, B! in about eight or nine hours from now.  GATA.

This is your home for in-game commenting, peeps.  Have a happy time with it.  See ‘ya on the other side.

If you told me that somehow, it was known that Georgia would win only one game a year for the next 100 years, and that some way, it was up to me to choose which game UGA would win, I wouldn’t need a schedule to make the choice. My immediate response would be, “We’ll just beat tech every year.”

That’s how much I hate tech.

We might have to play a lot of man coverage in our secondary, but I think we’ve got the guys to do that. Contain the running game, and don’t let Thomas get loose! Should be easy, right? Get our own running game going, keep their offense off the field, get them down early so they’re playing catch-up the entire game.

I think we’ll win because I don’t think their defense is as good as ours. But I think it’s going to be a tuff game.

I’m hoping that Kirby & Tucker dial up some really exotic and effective blitzes and pass rushing like Pruitt did. Don’t let them know what’s coming and from where.

With BVG breaking down film we should be prepared on D. There is always the question of execution but our DBs and Outside LBs have seen it before. As for the offense, I would hope Van Gorder was also asked to share some observations with Chaney about his and Roof’s strengths and weaknesses.

As for the tech game, a wise old man (RIP Ooogie) once said “boys, being able to beat Florida and Tennessee is like being able to buy your wife a nice car and having boats and lake houses. Beating tech is like being able to feed your kids.”

OK…it’s just started…we gashed GT running the ball..5..10 yards per carry…it comes down to third and two, deep in GT territory..we have two plays to get a couple of yard and we throw the f’ing ball..and then miss a chip shot…..Don’t like the mentality of playing for three, esp. in this game where GT’s line obviously is outmatched against our OL….That was jus kind of weak decision making to me.
Now GT will be on fire.

If you spent all year working on that, you should be looking for a new job before the 1st quarter ends. Good grief.

Hate to be the realist here. But Kirby was never able to corral option offenses at Alabama. They just out scored them. Chaney isn’t going to outscore anyone. The days of 13-2 over 15 years are gone.

Georgia not running the ball twice with third and two was the most CMR thing ever. That just fired GT up
We gotta hit the QB..He’s just standing there and letting him pitch it and then both of them watch the run.

Second drive makes my point. We ran it down their gut. Do that until they stop it and grind their d down while we use clock…because we get jack shit from missed fgs and only 3 from made ones. If they were jamming the run, it would be different..and we would be in big trouble.

We could be in for a long day. On each of the pitches, the man being optioned stood their flat-footed. You have to make the QB pitch early. The man being optioned on the dive has taken the dive each time. You need to force the hand off.

7-5 reg season is better than we expected after UF. 8-4 next year with a new OL would probably be overachieving. CKS might be coaching for his and McGarity’s life in 2018.

It’s up to me to overreact and say stupid crap. You just play football. And somebody hit that QB hard. I’m tired of hearing about physical football and want to see some!

We just threw it on first down from Tech’s 20…knocked down..puts us behind the sticks..RUN THE BALL,…. We did it on the first drive of the game. our first drive of the second half, and now again. That’s an almost guaranteed 15 points we’ve left on the field because ….I don’t know.
Love this team, but the OC is holding the points down with dumb strategy in the redzone. At least we left the trick plays in the locker room.

Still can’t get out of our own way. If the O could just get points occasionally before we need it, we’d be a lot more successful and it would be a lot less stressful. No good reason to lose this one. Embarrassing.

If we lose…which looks very likely..I’ll always contend that we lost it on the first drive of the game when we quit running the ball with third and short..and missed a FG…You can come away with 0 by going for it twice and failing. Then we did it again twice in the game. 15 points left
    Just don’t blame Bobo.
And to throw that pic when you’re trying to milk the clock.

How in any way is the state of UGA athletics any better than before McGoo arrived? Oh yeah, we’ve got a new $30M building for our struggling to get bowl-eligible football team to practice in 4 times a year.

We are a shit show. Leeburn knew what he was doing, though, because drinking heavily is the only way we’ll get through it.

How are we not able to open up the playbook with Roof loading the box? But it doesn’t help when your five star QB can’t hit a simple out route.

We didn’t need to open up the playbook. We just needed to run the ball.
The play calling is bad, really bad, in the red zone.

You’ve been sitting in your basements since UF waiting to commence your parade of told you so horse shit. Meanwhile, CMR can join you little closet GT fans in the go fuck ourselves trailer. Nobody cares about your whiny comments. They just want you to go away. You are all the Willie Martinez’s of the UGA fan base. Everyone wants you gone except for you and CMR. He thanks you for your support. Meanwhile, I will never, ever return to this blog post so when you read this, take comfort in knowing I got the last word. The only question after this pathetic effort is whether we end up getting embarrassed by a 5-6 team or stomped by some good team relagated to a Tidy Bowl game by bad luck. The really bad thing is that we were better when we played UNC than we are now. This team has actually regressed. At least next season I will know that 4-4 and 6-6 are our new normal.

D made some good adjustments at half but WHY IN THE HELL can’t we stop anyone inside the 20? For the offense, we do not have and must develop a killer instinct. I hate Spurrier and all he stands for but the man knew how to go for the jugular when he had you on the ropes. We, on the other hand, prefer to go into the victory formation with 4 minutes to go and the other team has all three timeouts.

    • I don’t know. Stinch said we gave up TDs like 77% of the time in the red zone. We should have just pulled a Paul Johnson and let them score on their last drive. Not sure what Kirby was thinking just let the clock run with one TO left. It’s not like we stopped them from scoring the whole game. Horrible clock management and play calling at the end of the game.

Helmand…it’s the cautious spirit of the coaches..When Georgia drove the ball on the first possession, and then gave up on a third and three (or two) or whatever it was…threw on third..and then missing a field goal, it became a losing cause. A coach with a killer instinct looks at third and two and says, “I’ve got two plays to gain two yards” and puts playing for a field goal (which isn’t a sure thing either) out of his mind.
CMR couldn’t do it and apparently, CMR is the same. Did it again twice in the second half. THIS is why we lost that game instead of winning it going away. Cautious Kirby needs to think about it.

  46. Hope Kirby is ready to get some heat. Between him and Chaney that last five minutes was a total fail in terms of playcalling and clock management. I don’t have a clue how you have them backed up inside the 6 and give up the biggest play of the game bc you’re late getting subs in and then waste a TO on offense when you’re trying to run out the clock to throw a pass that gets picked. Then you sit there in the red zone where you haven’t stopped anyone let alone Tech from scoring all year letting the clock run to leave yourself with 30 seconds and one TO bc you already wasted one. Should have just done a PJ and let them score.

In retrospect you are correct. It would have given the O more time to get into FG position and win the game.

      Like

      • Exactly. If there were ten people in the stadium or watching at home who thought that Tech wasn’t going to score a TD there they’d probably be hard to find. It was excruciating watching the clock ticking down.
