What a way to go

So much for my optimism.

Offseason just got a lot longer for this staff.

This was as Richtian a loss as possible. You can’t fire the man and still let this kind of garbage happen.

We need to get accustomed to 1.5x-2x as many ‘richtian’ losses per year now. Because they weren’t richtian, they were just losses. Now our coaching staff isn’t so hot, so we get more of them.

Only, Richt dominated Tech like no other UGA HC. I would say this is the most Smartian way to lose a game. We easily could have been 1-11 this season.

There is something we can all agree on. Should have done that years ago, the guy is an absolutely Empty Suit. Has accomplished nothing and bungled much. Would rather follow Vandy’s lead and abolish the position if we get nothing for the salary and office space.

At the start of the season, I thought 8-4 was the floor for this team. I was wrong. My season summary is that this coaching staff and team excels at snatching deaf eat from the jaws of victory.

So what does the AD have to do with this loss?

      Like

    • No. He’s thinking that the plan is working. Look, I hate losing to Tech; there a numbness in my soul that has been very unfamiliar the last decade or so. But McGarity has to be pleased with the body of work. If we look at W/L and points for/points against, we’re missing the point (ptp). It’s about the substance that has been created under the surface. With the change in ethic, focus, determination; with the winning mentality that CKS has been instilling – AND with a top 5 recruiting class coming in, McGarity probably feels a bit smug and self-satisfied. Not everyone can pull this off.

It’s all part of the super-secret shrewd plan.

We let McElwain win a weakened East Division for 4 to 5 years to lull them into a false sense of security while we secretly stockpile “Top 5 recruiting classes”.

Then, 5 to 6 years from now we beat them one time and finish second behind Tennessee after blowing a game to Rocky Top and losing on the Plains.

I wanted him to prove me wrong but bottom line he and his staff can’t coach up the team to avoid these disappointments. Kind of sick to hear how sad, sorry, disappointed Kirby is after the game. BTW, the Tech player DIDN’T score the winning TD. The ball was knocked out of his hands as he was going in but before he got it into the end zone. Shades of Jasper Sanks. The SEC refs f#ck Georgia any chance they get–even against an OOC opponent. Look closely at the replay and you can see the ball get knocked out short of the goal line, fall into the end zone and a Georgia player fall on it. Another win stolen!!

No, he didn’t. We beat Tech in regulation last year. Since you are asking me to compare 2 Tech games to 1, the obvious is Richt won one and Smart hasn’t.

Look at the 2015 season and compare it to 2016. We played 8 teams last year that we played this year, and we were 6-2 against those 8 teams last year. We were 4-4 against those same 8 teams this year. We substituted a national champion Alabama for a 7 loss Ole Miss and still got beaten as badly (I know, we played UM when Kelly was healthy, but even then we suffered the worst deficit to an SEC team in our history when we got behind what, 45-0? UM wasn’t historically good with a healthy Kelly.)

We essentially traded Georgia Souther for a better UNC team. The UNC win was a nice win, so there is that in Smart’s favor.

Disagree…we didn’t play well on defense at the end because of injuries to our defensive backs..GT exploited that. But it was the OFFENSE that cost us this game. Or the offensive play calling…We got down close on three occasions running the ball, and then threw ourselves into fourth down situations. Missed a field goal too. Keep running and use all four downs to get a first down and to hell with field goals. Field goals are for teams that can’at move the ball. Georgia moved the ball all day. It was STUPID to throw the ball and settle for 6 points out of those trips into or close to the red zone. If Georgia keeps it on the ground, they absolutely would have gotten 7 on at least one of those..and left GT deep if they turned it over on downs. The team played good enough to win…the coaches made poor decisions (cautious, cautious) which cost the win.

I just don’t have the words. UT was a miracle that I could forgive. We got Ole Miss’s best game of the year. Vandy was ugly. FU was worse. This? I’m just beyond words. 13 point lead that we just pissed directly away in the 4th quarter, because we don’t want to just stuff the ball down their throat and chew clock all day long? Eason threw a pick, but we won the turnover margin. Blankenship missed a kick off of a bad snap. This loss is on the staff. Completely and totally.

I hope to god that Ben Cleveland is the real deal next year, and that we don’t have to pick up a grad transfer from an FCS school to anchor our o-line.

At the start of the season, I expected us to be an 8-4 team and said that I would judge the season based on three games. We finished 7-5 (and 1-2 in the games that matter), so yeah I do have some disappointment.

But that Auburn win was real sweet and the losses don’t erase it. I think all you can ask from first-year head coaches is to win one game they shouldn’t. By that standard Coah Smart did just fine. If he closes strong on the recruiting trail, I’ll feel good about the future, especially considering how well some of the freshmen have played.

    Like

  18. pumblechook114

Im sure I’ll get shit for this, but this loss isn’t all on the coaches. The game was lost on big plays as a result of blown assignments on defense, in the passing game of all things. Whatever blame you want to place on the coaches, you’ll have a hard time arguing that they could’ve done much more to, for instance, keep both Dom Sanders and Roquan Smith from letting Searcy go by them on the big pass play on Tech’s last drive. Or making Lorenzo Carter stay on the pitch man like he’s supposed to instead of keying on the qb.

And the decision to pass it on the last drive was a bad one in hindsight, but it should’ve been an easy throw for an easy first down that just happened to get tipped just right to be picked.

This game was a microcosm of Georgia’s season: plenty of blame to go around, and doing just enough to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

    Like

  19. Blame whatever. I say it’s our inability to score in the red zone/settling for FGs which equates to the inability to put a team away. Toss in suspect FG kicking and there you go. Had we made that miss FG or scored a TD we most likely wouldn’t be discussing a collapse. That makes 6 games decided by 3 or less this year. We were that close all year or maybe that close to finishing off average teams depending on how you look at it.

It’s not Rodrigo’s fault. If a field goal counted 4, he would be a hero. But the coaches that think going for 4 four times gets you more points than grinding it out in the red-zone against a defense you are slashing with runs, is a dumbass. Even Paul Johnson knows that math. If fg’s were unmissable, we’d have won, but three out of four is about right. You’ve risked 12 and got 9 out of it. However if you only make two out of the four by going for a touchdown, you get 14…Field goals suck, except to win on a short clock situation. Field goals are for the cautious that don’t understand that they also de-inspire your offense.

This was a loss that was coming for a year even if Mark Richt was kept. The untold story about this rivalry since Paul Johnson has gone there is that every single first year DC for Georgia has struggled against his triple option and now 3 of the 4 games have been losses. And even if Richt was kept, Pruitt was gone. He was gone even if he wasn’t going to Alabama because of how much Georgia’s AD and powerful boosters hated his guts.

The defense did not have a good game plan at first and then later the secondary was letting guys run wide open on every pass play but this game is on that sequence after the fourth down stop at midfield. Why go conservative there? You still have to play as if the game is in doubt.

I’ve been saying for almost a year now: Might as well close your eyes and hold your nose until 2017, because 2016 isn’t going to be pretty. Anyone with a fucking brain and two eyes could see it.

Kirby came from a program that (a) actually knows how to evaluate talent at positions like OL and DB, unlike Richt & Co., and (b) understands the importance of depth on a roster, unlike Richt & Co. As much as I love our DBs, they’re not especially talented (pretty sure Sanders, Mauger, and Baker were all 3-stars, and Davis was a walk-on). And as we found out in that 4th quarter, it’s not a very deep group either. And I don’t think I need to explain how bad our OL is. Frankly, I think Pittman pulled off a minor miracle to get them performing at a passable level during the second half of the season. Our starting LT is a transfer from Rhode Island. Sorry, but Rhode Island guys can’t play in the SEC. Those two position groups are currently weak spots on an otherwise fairly talented (but not nearly deep enough) team.

Thankfully, we’re already seeing evidence of future greatness. Kirby’s building from the ground up, and we’re seeing that in a young DL that will be absolutely nasty next season. And recruiting seems to be going well, especially at the OL and DB positions. Not saying we’ll be making the playoff in 2017, but an Eastern Division title seems like a reasonable expectation at this point.

It’s just unfortunate that so many in this fanbase appear to have the patience and critical thinking skills of an infant.

In the meantime, I am once again glad to have gone to graduate school at a university with a top-tier basketball program. Good riddance to this football season.

I don’t care how thin we are in the secondary, we’ve got more athletes on the bench than Tech has on the field. And even if Kirby doesn’t have the personnel he wants right now, I still expect to see progress with the players he has. We’re still making September mistakes in November. For instance we had Ridley and Woerner in the same area on 3rd down in the red zone. Incomplete pass in traffic results in a field goal. That’s a mistake that should be corrected in August.

          • Don’t bother with reason. There’s probably not a single player on tech’s depth chart that would play for us. That more than anything else is what makes losses like this, ’14 and ’08 completely unacceptable.

            Like

          • Turd Ferguson

No. For starters, when you take into account the fact that Tech’s secondary has played their entire careers in Roof’s system, the talent disparity isn’t nearly as wide as you’re making it out to be. (We’ve got a couple of 4-stars in Parrish and Smith, but we’ve also got a walk-on starting at safety.) And second, as we all know, the triple-option is meant to neutralize talent disparities. This is sort of the point. It forces even the most talented players to be disciplined and play assignment football. And when you’ve got a defense as young and inexperienced as ours (especially behind the starters, many of whom were out of the game late), having just spent an entire season trying to learn a new system from Tucker & Co., discipline and assignment reads are going to be a real issue.

I don’t know that I would have predicted today’s loss, since I generally try to avoid making predictions. But as far as I’m concerned, it’s one of the least surprising losses of the season — second perhaps only to the Ole Miss ass-whipping, which everyone should’ve seen coming from a mile away.

Thank god for your critical thinking so maybe you can explain to me why Smart was building our 2017 and 2018 offensive line by playing almost exclusively 2 seniors and a graduate transfer instead of getting our freshmen, redshirt freshmen and sophomore offensive linemen some extensive game experience during this throwaway season? Next year you critical thinkers will be pointing out to those of us with no fucking brain or eyes that “of course we are struggling because we have three offensive linemen with no game experience.”

Then I can tell other folks with no fucking brains how much I learned from a man named Turd.

Said it before uga runs the wrong offense . Even bama has switched to the spread. Saw techs o invented in the early 80s in Stateboro Ga. Now Tom Herman will take a version of it to Texas and we could have had him last year. We have better players at all positions all and they have a scheme and a coaching staff that can coach. Kirby should stop jumping around and bitching out the players. He also did not call time out and could have saved 30 seconds when tech was going in but he let the clock run and took the time out home with him. Eason will never Beat Florida and Smart may beat the 1 out of 6 or 7 Maybe . UGA admin never backed CMR and now we have this shit pathetic

It is obvious by your vast array of politically charged posts that the real enemy to our nation is anyone who represents a belief that differs from you. One more thing if I may. Comparing Trump, or anyone involved in American politics to “Hitler” is insulting and repulsive to anyone with even the barest knowledge of history and truth. There are many books you can peruse to get a better grasp on the true horrors of Hitler and the third reich, none of which bear any resemblance to American leaders. I might recommend, “The Dungeon Democracy” by Christopher Burney, or “No Time For Silence”.by Sylvia Lombroso. These may help to give you some insight as to why it is reprehensible to call someone with whom you have disagreement in policy “Der Fuhrer”.Please feel free to begin the name calling. It’s one of your more charming traits.

Under his expanded definition of race, everyone who disagrees with ANY one position of his is a racist…even if the subject/comment has nothing at all to do with race. damnedest thing. But as a hater, he doesn’t care. Just labels you and moves on to label the next guy. In fact, since we now are all known racists, you would think maybe we could all get along. Could it be there are issues besides race? Man, that will shake him to the core. Imagine when he looks in the mirror and sees a bigoted, close-minded racist looking back at him? Since he is one too, he might have to find a new cause. He isn’t bright enough to read or comprehend anything you might suggest, just a programmed tool reposting what he is told by the puppet masters with no understanding of the issues.

Trump’s been involved in politics for his entire adult life. That’s why I used those terms. I could just as easily have said “public figures.” And frankly, I think it was both stupid and ironic of him to say that.

And the electoral college is as justified today as it’s ever been. As this “Jp” clown not-so-eloquently-but-nonetheless-rightly pointed out, we do not live in a democracy. We live in a republic. Every political theorist since ancient Greece has been keenly aware of the flaws of direct democracies, and the founders were no different. Like it or not, but California shouldn’t have the power to elect a president for the other 49 states.

During the week or two leading up to the election, there were a few forecasts that predicted precisely the opposite outcome: Trump winning the popular vote but losing the electoral vote. Did you think the electoral college was unjust then? You need not answer honestly. It’s rhetorical.

Since electoral votes are distributed by population I’m not sure that it reflects the sort of republicanism that the senate represents. It is quite similar to the House which is supposed to reflect the will of the people i.e., democracy.

I’ve always thought that most of the people get these calls right. If this minority elected president is as bad as the last one, we’ll have some real trouble.

I see a lot to be optimistic about and I see some reasons for pessimism. Six of one, a half dozen of the other.

We must get better at safety. It’s a glaring weakness. I haven’t seen a snot bubble in so long I have to watch YouTube reruns of Greg Blue to remember what a safety in red and black looks like.

We must get better at offensive tackle if we ever hope to be consistent with this elusive philosophy known as balance. It’s been this way since we had the phenom NFL left tackle Cordy Glenn playing guard next to future NFL guard Clint Boling playing tackle. It’s very confusing.

We need a kicking specialist. I miss being Field Goal U on days like this. I love the glasses and shit but God knows I miss going to piss on FG attempts.

I just want to know why can’t we have nice things?

I haven’t posted in a few years but I read Senator Blutarsky every day. I skip the comments except for after Game 1 and after Game 12. It’s very enlightening. In doing so, I’ve learned what CMR has long known….. there are a lot of ignorant people outside the arena.

One thing that you can say about Bama is that while they are also stacked on the lines and at RB they always seem to have one big physical WR.

I man’smoved the ball pretty well between the 20s but this offense has been and is anemic inside that. An entire freaking season and Chaney still thinks we can run the ball on 1st and 2nd inside the redzone. This offense has and will continue to truly live and die under the same gameplan every single game. Hey! That end-a-round to McKenzie got 4 yards so let’s run it the next 2 plays in a row. Hey! Eason was really close on a couple deep passes early on, no sense in trying to stretch the field again. Intermediate pass?? What’s this strange magic? If Kirby doesn’t get rid of him he can go too as far as I’m concerned. I just don’t see a better oline making up for him. I’m sure I will repeat this post multiple times this week but here we go.

No one can argue that Richt had a fantastic record against tech, only 2 losses in 15 tries but does any one remember his first loss?

Think back to 2008 where Mark Richt’s Georgia Bulldogs blew a 16 point lead at Sanford Stadium to lose a three point game in his first look at Paul Johnson’s triple option. Sound familiar?

A few slight differences to point out though, UGA was preseason ranked #1 in 2008 coming off one of the best years in school history with a roster full of players that would go on to be drafted in the NFL including a #1 overall junior quarterback, a 1st round junior running back, , wide receivers that would go in the 1st, 2nd, and 4th round of their respective draft years. All of which were recruited by and played for the same coach their entire career.

In fact, if you take out the O’Liary and Chantastic years, Richt had a very respectable but not as dominate 6-2 record against tech, 2-2 at Sanford Stadium. But I agree, it’s wayyyyy better to ignore the relevant facts when wallowing in self pity or reaching for torches and pitchforks.

Fact of the matter is, this season hasn’t gone as any of us had hoped but it has gone about how many expected given what we knew.
