I’ve probably spammed your blog more often than I should with this, but coaches that do not win their conference inside of 3 years do not have a history of ever winning the conference, let alone establishing themselves as annual contenders.

Saban done made the SEC fans insane with what he is doing over there, but unless the expectation is to just wait till he croaks or retires, you have to knock him off his perch to win a title. Kirby better do that in 2018 or we may find ourselves in the wilderness with Tennessee.

The east is going to be absolute garbage next year, even worse than this year, with most of UT’s talent departing and Muscamp’s defense at UF as well. Our talent is not so far gone that we should not be contending for the east in a big way in November next year.

Mike has yet to win his conference and is in year 4. he also inherited a program that went 1-11 the year before he arrived.

colorado has no ability to recruit immediate, 5 star talent. Schools that can contend annually for their conference title have the ability to go anywhere in the country to recruit people, but more importantly, they are usually in a state with ample talent resources within a 5 hour drive.

        Colorado has none of that.

Georgia sits in the hottest 5 hour radius of any school in the country and should recruit like it. Even as poor as the talent is considered to be at UGA, it is not entirely bereft of talent. the ’15 class under Richt was a very good one. the ’16 class under Smart was a very good one. the ’17 class also should be a very good one.

That should put Kirby in position to have 22 starters that have the talent to win the east in ’17 and that should be our expectation. All this, 5 year rebuilding crap is just excuse making.

The rebuild started with the 2015 class. the ’17 season should see us win the East. the ’18 should see us in position to win the conference. With these players as juniors and seniors, ’18/19 should be very, very good seasons.

if they aren’t, we hired the wrong coach.

I don’t just hand out my hard earned money for entertainment because I hope to be rewarded four years from now. There are numerous other coaches that we could have taken a passing glance at that would take what we have on hand (warts and all) and make it somewhat competitive and exciting while still building for the future. Man – the boobs at Butts-Mehre and our beer baron really cocked this one up.

Its going to be sad to see so many empty seats at the home games next year:

      Appalachian State
      Samford
      Mississippi State
      Mizzou
      South Carolina
      Kentucky

As an aside (and I hate to mention this…) But may I submit to you that our two supposed “cupcake” games next year – App State and Samford – will be much more difficult games than the two from this year? Aye aye aye.

I can’t say that I am ready to drop my season tickets next season, but I would like to move all of them before the season and buy what I need on the street.

not ready to give up my seats, but after several years of asking to move my tickets and getting no movement, increase in ticket price, donation and the upcoming schedule, not sure why I dont give them up.

I will never have enough points to get tech tickets or something like ND or the championships, and I can still buy those on the street for barely over face.

I’m in the same boat, brother. Been trying to move my seats the last four seasons to no avail. The last two seasons and the lack of a commitment to us from B-M has pushed me to my breaking point. I’ll forever give money to the Tull School of Accounting for all the good it has done me and my family, but I’m done with this one-sided relationship. Sure – I’ll still watch the games and probably attend a few – but I have zero desire to spend that sum of money on something I haven’t particularly enjoyed for awhile and feel that the other side doesn’t appreciate our investment by being straight with us.

Don’t worry, I think you’ll definitely be able to move your seats next year because I suspect a lot of ticket holders like myself will either cut back the number they buy or cancel their seats all together. The real problem will be getting enough on the sale of your tickets to cover the cost of donation and seats. You’ll probably take it in the shorts there as I’ve noticed the re-sale value has fallen significantly the past 2-3 years.

That is a reasonable question to ask. This is my somewhat effete answer. My kids are both in their thirties and still enjoy going with me when work and other responsibilities permit. I have the power of The Hartman Fund score and they and I like our lower north side location. The could not get comparable seats on their own, and they could not at this time afford The Hartman Fund and and season ticket costs. Therefore I will continue to buy so the seats for them and their friends will be available. I have passed on going to a couple of games this season, and my children have only been able to go to 2 each, so I have gotten rid of more than normal this year.

I will contribute and buy in 2017 the same number for that reason.

It is amazing how much hatred for Richt keeps hanging on with the people who wanted him gone for years and therefore have to defend Kirby at all costs. Dantzler is exhibit A for this phenomenon, but I’m hearing a lot of it. They can’t seem to comprehend that there was a middle ground where you could get rid of Richt and hire anyone but an unproven coordinator who happened to play football under Jim Donnan at UGA. It is all or nothing.

The funny thing is that they’re defending the exact same failures for which they hammered Richt since 2006.

It wasn’t half cocked, it was decided before that.

As posted before, I am of the opinion there was no real search as Richt would not have been fired last year if Smart didn’t look to be headed to a SEC East program. Further the “Money doesn’t make you Smarter” update yesterday illustrates the difficulty of getting a coach to leave a P5 program without throwing out Saban level amounts of money and handing over absolute control of the program, which I also believe the alumni understand all of this and communicated their wishes to the AD and President.

McG knew the boosters wanted to pull the trigger on the switch from Richt to Smart and they would not fund a coaching move for a new HC that was not to their liking.

    • I would say Kirby was about as well thought of a coordinator as Richt was when he came to us from FSU. Richt worked out well for us for a few years so Kirby can as well.

Who did you think we were going to get last year- Nick Saban or Bill Belechik? Tom Herman? Is that an example of your “middle ground”? Herman right now is probably as well thought of as the guy he is replacing when Strong left Louisville. How’d that work out for Texas?

We will know around 2018 if Kirby has it or does not have it. If he has it, awesome for us. If he doesn’t have it, get rid of him.

And, if we do have to make a change in 3-4 years, why sit around now for days/weeks/months whining and fretting about us screwing up the potential next hire for an event that hasn’t and may not even occur?

A lot of y’all have got come to grips with that or you are going to be miserable until then.

The reason I bitch is that the hiring process was so poor. Who do I think we were going to get otherwise, shit I don’t know but I am not in charge of hiring the UGA football coach and the guy who was in charge knew as much as me.

If that doesn’t scare you about what happens if in 3/4 years we have to do it again then I don’t know what will.

        Like

        • Sitting around bitching about something that occurred one year ago is not a good look. It happened, move on.

If you are going to bitch about what happened, you seemingly are unable to offer up who we could have got that would be better. Anyone we brought in would have risks no matter what transparent hiring process we employed to find our guy. Again, Saban and Belechik weren’t coming.

Since I hit campus we have hired Ray Goff, Glenn Mason, Jim Donnan, and an unproven coordinator (your words) in Mark Richt. I’ve seen the level of hires from UGA for 27 years so Kirbys hire or the next one doesn’t “scare” me anymore than the others.

I am probably well over $2k for just me to see those games. Oh and 14 saturdays over 2 year.

McGarity and the BM crowd know the Georgia fan base and know they will keep those checks coming in no matter how bad the schedule or start times are. The Hartman Extortion Fund scheme is the perfect tool to keep the ticket buying fans in line. No one dares to protest by not renewing for fear of losing their precious points. I’ve been hearing since the Goff years from ticket buyers that they won’t give up their tickets because “…if I give them up now, I won’t be able to get tickets when we get good again…”. That logic has been going on for about 30 years now. I can guarantee the donations and ticket sales will not drop any this year.

Outside of the SC game next season, every game will have plenty of tickets available for $20 or less on game day. The SC game tickets will bring more because more of their fans will make the trip to Athens.

If we’d retained Richt, this is a five-win season. We wouldn’t have Maurice Smith, so the Auburn game would likely be a loss. We probably go .500 between Kentucky and Mizzou. So that puts us at an absolutely fireable 5 wins, Kirby’s either at South Carolina or still happily ensconced at Bama, and we’re looking for a coach at the same time as Texas, LSU, Oregon and likely others. So stop mourning Richt, because dumping him when we did is probably the only smart move McGarity has made throughout this fiasco.

LSU settled for Orgeron this year. What makes you think something better than Kirby was in the offing for Georgia?

Right, it’s totally reasonable to expect that we would have season worse, by a mile, than literally every single one of the previous 15. Despite never finishing worse than 34th in S&P+ in the darkest of days, he would have had us even worse than the 69th spot we occupy this year. And all of that with the 6th best rostered talent in the country according to 247.

Records for a single year are pretty random. This team could have been 10-2 or 3-9, but either way it’s a team with a decent defense and a god-awful offense. That’s why we’re 69th in s&p+, because we suck. The 10-3 team from last year (34th, btw, Richt’s worst ever) would get beaten by that 6-7 team most days, and this years squad is far worse.

ATLDawg made my point for me w/r/t 2010, and now you’re merely supplying supporting arguments. Richt wouldn’t do appreciably more with this team than Kirby did, and there’s a 15-year body of evidence to suggest he would’ve done worse. For example, he twice went into Lexington with freshman QBs — QBs who turned out to be among the program’s all-time best — and lost both times.

Alternate Reality 2016 UGA Coach Richt would either be calling plays, have Schotty doing it (shudder) or hire some retread who didn’t mind being OC for a dead-coach-walking. And somehow this translates to 8 wins. Got it.

        Yup.

If you want to hypothetically consider a season where Richt stays, you’d have to realize that whether HE liked it or not, even if Kirby Smart is still at Alabama hypothetically, Georgia’s high level boosters hated Pruitt and were going to force him out despite performing, and he would have had to fire Schottenheimer.

So how does he do? I think he loses to North Carolina but beats Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech to finish 8-4, and 9-3 with one oopsie loss would have been the ceiling for the season.

When you consider the hypothetical Richt season this year, you have to also consider the vulgar the boosters and Greg McGarity had for him.

What’s amazing to me is the NOW NOW NOW 5 year old temper tantrum attitude of such a large percentage of our fanbase. I wouldn’t go as far as Dantzler did as calling this a throwaway season, as that’s not fair to the seniors, but we had almost an ENTIRELY new coaching staff this year. Look back on every school in the history of college football that has a new OC, DC, and HC and I’d bet the majority of them struggled in year 1. The line between 4-8 and 10-2 is ever so small, as we all witnessed this season. I expect improvement next year, and I think we will get it… with more experience across the board, coaches included. Patience is an endangered virtue these days.

Unfortunately there are people calling for Kirby’s head… no one with any sense mind you but its out there. I’m just as pissed/disappointed as anyone else here at how this season has gone, don’t get me wrong. You can have a near death experience against anyone by making the number of egregious mistakes we made against Nicholls. And we are not the only team that had trouble with Vandy this year. Ask Ole Miss and Tennessee. Hell FU only beat them by 6 at home. My point is this type of inconsistency should not be so alarming in Kirby’s first year as head coach, and with first year offensive and defensive coordinators coaching a team lead by an 18 year old QB. I think winning 3 straight at the end of the year against good football teams was progress. The reason we lost to Tech were blown assignments by backup DBs and an errant throw by a young QB or it would’ve been 4 in a row.

A lot of people were grounded going into the year expecting about an 8-4 season which is really about what we got. (Honestly whats the difference in 7-5 and 8-4?) Then we came out and beat top 25 UNC in the Dome and everyone chugged the kool-aid setting up for major disappointment (myself included). I choose to believe, however, that Kirby will be a better HC in year two with in game decisions and clock management; we will see fewer bonehead mistakes; more players buying in and playing on the same team; that the sky is not falling; and the future remains bright. Trust in the process.

      Some experience, in certain areas.

Fixed that for ya. There will be inexperience at a lot of positions, too numerous to list now. As for the coaching staff, I don’t recall having any rookies on the staff so experience isn’t lacking there. The saving grace may well be the schedule next year. Not that strong. Kirby has, HAS, to get buy in from everyone, starting now.

Can we get Bobo, Murray, Stafford, et al, to come spend some time with Eason? Please?

I don’t think this attitude of wanting to see some results is a temper tantrum, nor is it a lack of patience on the part of many of us. We are getting damn tired of excuses for the lack of performance, a lack of results, a lack that would have gotten many of us run off from our jobs.

I dropped my season tix 2 years ago because of the price increases and consistently weak home scheduling (also packed with nooners with maybe one marquee 3:30 or 7:00 kickoff per year). I can still buy the tix I want for the big games and spend 1/10th of what I spent on the season package. With the SEC network now televising every game I decided then, this was a much wiser way to spend my hard earned money.

Like I said, I’m tired of it too, that’s why I’m excited we made some changes to try to go in a new direction last year. However, with a new staff and a first year head coach, I don’t think we are as bad off as some people will lead you to believe. Really the biggest thing we are lacking is consistency which comes from experience. 2017 will be better and 2018 should be better than that.

How about it being not fair to the patrons who paid good money for tickets, which includes Hartman Fund contributions, only to say at the end, “We were willing for this to be a throwaway year.”

      Great fucking marketing plan.

He is playing the numbers……..2018 is our year.
    1942 to 1980 = 38 years
    1980 to 2018 = 38 years

I’m so tired of all this “Richt had much better talent in 2001 than Kirby in 2016”. 1999-2000 we were 16-8. 2014-2015 we were 20-6. We returned 15 starters. We’ve just had several top recruiting classes in a row. We had fewer injuries this year than is typical. And we’re 7-5. We’re 7 freaking 5 with a plus 7 turnover ratio. I’m all for keeping Kirby for now, but Dantzler and everyone else needs to acknowledge that this was not an acceptable first season and that next season needs to be much better.

  21. “To me, throwaway season implies that Smart had a plan to use this year as a learning experience to build on towards better times”

Does anyone here think that maybe Dantzler and Butler used the term “throwaway season” just meant that it turned out shitty and was forgettable because of all the tough losses? Just like some other seasons we have had – 2009, 2010.

Seems to me there is a lot of angst in these comments about an interpretation of an implication. Or, maybe there is just angst from the Tech game/season?

    • If you listened to the broadcast, you wouldn’t have to ask that question.

But for the sake of argument, let’s say you’re right. What do you think Dantzler means about “next season”?

      • I had the entire broadcast on when they came on and signed off; can’t say I heard every word as I had guests in the car but tried to listen to as much as I could without being rude to people in my car.

Looking at that Twitter screen shot it looks to me like he could have just meant this year and next season we must recruit well. Which, goes along with his overall theme I did hear continually on the way home from the game.

I was not a business or advertising major at UGA, but I suspect that if spokespeople for the program say things that lead to someone having to get on a message board and explain that everyone ‘s interpretation is wrong, then it is probably a terrible comment from a marketing or advertising or public relations standpoint.

      • I didn’t say it was definitely wrong- I said it could be.

An implication was interpreted by one person from something said by a radio person after a shitty loss and a ‘tweet’.

Then, much of this blog reacts as if McGarity and Kirby held a joint press conference saying 2016 and 2017 were ‘throwaway seasons’, didn’t matter whatsoever, because it’s all about 2018/2019.

A fair amount of groupthink going on here.

        • That’s heavy, dude.

Kevin Butler is on that broadcast and on staff. All he had to do at any time was step in and tell Dantzler he was overdoing the downplaying. Instead, what I heard from them both was a ton of excuse making on behalf of Smart. And, again, Butler right now isn’t just some “radio person”.

          • Well what I continually heard on their broadcast was we are very thin and young at certain positions and needed to recruit lights out the next 2 years, nobody fears coming into Sanford, and we must learn how to put teams away and obviously don’t know how to do it.

Other than the excuse of being thin/young at some positions, what excuses were being used?

Granted, they do pump some sunshine but that is their job I believe as they did that after Richts tough losses as well.

I have been a season ticket holder since I graduated in ’83. This year I only purchased because I was able to sell in advance. This year I’m done. I have no confidence in Kirby and since all the games are on TV why bother. Always some guy says “Great now I can get better tickets” if a season ticket holder threatens leaving. I honestly hope you are able to upgrade but I’m out.
