The Herbstreit Doctrine cannot fail. It can only be failed.

*Hot take a week ago:

Unfortunately for ol’ Herbie, Washington crushed Colorado in the Pac-12 championship game and finished the regular season with a 12-1 record.  That should be it, then, right?  I mean, only one loss and a conference title ought to count for something, right?

Not so fast, my friend.

Oh.  Man, what was I thinking of?

Oh, yeah, that.

***********************************************************************

UPDATE:  GameDay, for the win.

Sure.  I mean, why not?

The whole thing is rigged, the officials are rigged, its all rigged, rigged, rigged.

  2. That is some serious Big 10 homerism right there. Herby is almost as biased as those SEC refs were for Bama last night.

    • SEC refs biased for Bama? Who knew? They have been doing that for 75 years.

    • Yeah, that was obviously the difference in the outcome.

      • Didn’t say that. Bama didn’t need any help. But if you watched that game and came away thinking the officiating was fair, I probably need to break some tough news to you about Santa and the Easter Bunny. They did not throw a flag on Bama until 12 minutes in the 3rd quarter, if my memory serves me. Early in the game there was obvious holding going on against the FL front. The multiple blocks in the back on a particular punt return was fat out obscene.

        • I saw UF o-line holding on almost every play…eye of the beholder I guess.

        • Steve Shaw would say the Florida defensive front was obtaining an unfair advantage, so Alabama’s offensive line could hold to negate said advantage.

Didn’t Shaw say one time that holding according to the rules happens on every play and it’s at the officials’ discretion on whether to call it?

SEC officiating … I used to think it was just bad. Now I just think it’s corrupt.

It IS corrupt. I am convinced that the SEC front office is fixing games using refs. There is SO much money involved for the conferences when one of their teams gets into the playoff (and before that the BCSNCG) and the top bowls that there is tremendous incentive to make sure that the best conference team doesn’t get upset and the SEC fell victim to it. This has been going on for years, too. FU had no chance last night even if the GayTurds played the best game of their lives (and this comes from a noted Gator-Hater). The SEC refs were NEVER going to let FU win just like they were never going to let Georgia beat LSU in the SECCG in ’11 which I thought was the most one-sided reffed game I ever saw. There are plenty of other examples. If you watch closely you’ll see it, too. Their favorite gambit is the flagrant no-call. They also love to call a phantom hold when the underdog makes a big play on O that threatens the favored team late. The only way to stop this is to take the refs away from the conferences, make them all employees of the NCAA and randomly assign them to games all over the nation. I wish the Feds would investigate this–there are MILLIONS of dollars at stake yet nobody in law enforcement does anything about it. All they would have to do is subpoena a bunch of refs and former refs, put them in front of a grand jury and offer them immunity. I guarantee one of more would take the deal and fess up.

I’ll believe that there bias is for Alabama, but what I won’t believe is that they favor teams that have a shot to win it all. Exhibit A @ 6:04: https://youtu.be/YIzcqArsYwI

Bingo mayor you’re right on it and its been going on for years. The problem is that a good many of the officials are attorneys and great liars so putting them in front of a grand jury would be a waste of time but you nailed it my friend!!!

Why bother with conference schedules and deciding which team is a conference champion?

ESPN owns the playoff system and runs it for profit so it constantly touts how great this is, just and The Coca Cola Company marketed New Coke as something wonderful.

Both The Playoff and New Coke were bad changes from the old products.

Just a marketing ploy my friend, this dumpster fire will encourage the expansion of the cfp. Welcome to the dark side……..

When Washington is left out in favor of Penn State, the last semblance of integrity and impartiality will be destroyed. May as well change the name from CFP to ESPN Invitational. The whole system is a sham.

I would disagree with you there. Penn State won its conference and beat OSU head to head.

If you said “When Washington is left out in favor of Ohio State……” I would have agreed 100%.

You make an excellent point that I agree with but unfortunately its not even worth considering that notion. The likelihood of TOSU being excluded is equal to that of my finding $1 million under the sofa this morning.

Ohio St does not deserve to be in. Wisc, MichSt & Mich should have beaten their ass.

Actually I like OU better than Penn State if you are going to let in a 2 loss conference champion. tOSU is out because of the 2007 Herbstreit doctrine IMHO. They didn’t even win their division.

  5. If 2 B1G teams get in, I won’t watch a minute of any of the 3 games. I’m tempted to sit it out if Ohio State gets in specifically because of the Empty Suit, Pretty Boy Herbie Doctrine.

I think OSU should be in for the same reasons we should have been in back in 2007. Herbie’s the hypocrite, not me.

This kind of hypocrisy is precisely why I was, deep breath, pulling for the stinking gators yesterday. My ideal four-team CFB playoff field would contain zero conference champions. Then the bastards in charge would be forced to write in blood that winning your conference is completely outdated. Just another tradition to bite the dust.

I would like to congratulate THE ohio state university for winning the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship brought to you by Dr. Pepper “Ice Cold”. Despite losing to the University of Alabama by a score of 45-13 in the College Football Playoff Semifinal, playing in and winning the College Football Playoff National Championship game is not a requirement for winning the National Championship; it is one of many criteria used by the committee to determine the National Champion. When asked what was the deciding factor, College Football Playoff Committee member, Barry Alvarez, replied “Well, the big thing was that they won the Ohio State vs Michigan game. No other team can claim a win in that game”. Committee member, Jeff Bower, replied “ESPN gave me a check for fifty grand to vote OSU the Champs. I haven’t had a job since 2007, and the recession really kicked my ass”.

  10. Based on recent business reports, I look forward to the demise of ESPN and its monkeying around with too many sports, the most important to me being college football. Best case scenario would be loss of TV revenue so AD’s would need to pay more attention to real fans attending games. Of course, this is just wild rambling from an old man.

His evening long groveling for Washington to be thrown to the curb was nauseating. Guy is totally out of control and unprofessional by attempting to influence both the rankings and the Heisman. Another reason to ditch anything with ESPN or ABC affiliated. I admit I watch live CFB and gold majors, but draw the line there. Screw ’em, hope those who know how to cut the cord continue the trend.

  13. Yeah for UW and Herbie is a douche bag, excuse me that is an insult to douches everywhere. I quit watching espn years ago. You know what they say about assholes and opinions. They are prime example.
Now I would die happy if UW beats Bama. The observer part of me goes to hell and the fan comes out.
