The final act of Georgia’s 2016 play

Pro Football Focus summarizes the Liberty Bowl as follows:

Georgia QB Jacob Eason has struggled against pressure this year, completing just 33.8 percent of his passes and posting a QB rating of 44.7. He has also struggled with his downfield accuracy, as he has completed only 22 of his 109 shots at least 20 yards from the line of scrimmage. While TCU hasn’t produced a consistent pass rush this season, the Horned Frogs rank 19th in coverage grading among Power-5 schools. CB Ranthony Texada has given up just two receptions of at least 20 yards in his past seven games, while his counterpart, Jeff Gladney has given up just three such catches the entire season.

Georgia’s ability to move the ball on offense relies almost solely on RBs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel, who have combined for 1741 yards and forced 60 missed tackles. Due to poor offensive line play, 1162 of their yards have come after first contact. TCU’s front seven is strong against the run, led by DT Aaron Curry. If the Georgia backfield can’t make TCU defenders miss – the Horned Frogs have missed 136 tackles this season – TCU should be able to put up enough points on offense to pull off the upset.

That really hits where I’m feeling the toughest part of the game is for Georgia today.  With Ridley’s injury taking one more playmaker off the field, I have a sense that Chaney and Smart are going to double down on pounding the ball.  Georgia is going to have its usual trouble scoring points as a result.  Can the Dawgs keep up with the Frogs if they have to?  I’m skeptical.

Marc Weiszer mentions two other factors affecting my thinking about the game.  One is something very much in Georgia’s favor:

Georgia is 19th nationally in turnover margin (+7). TCU is 84th (-3).

This game looks close enough to me that going +2 in turnover margin might well be enough to make the difference.  Georgia is more likely to pull that off than is TCU.

On the other hand, this definitely isn’t something in Georgia’s favor.

Georgia’s Kirby Smart is 7-5 in his first year as a head coach. He is 3-1 in nonconference games. TCU’s Gary Patterson 149-53 in 15 seasons, all at TCU, making him the school’s all-time winningest coach.

In a tight game, are you gonna go with the guy who’s still working out the bugs that come with on the job training or the one who’s led his team through several bowl games already?

My heart’s with Georgia on this one, but my head tells me we’re about to see one last game marked by the same problems — constipated offense and red zone woes — that have plagued the Dawgs all season.  They’ll both cost them today in a narrow loss.

At least we’ve got recruiting to look forward to, eh?

Consider this your game day thread.

Between Chubb and Michel I wonder who has broken more tackles this season? My guess is it’s pretty even despite Chubb getting the majority of the carries.

If you just focus on results, you won’t get what you want out of life, you won’t get what you want out of a season, you won’t get what you want out of a game,” ……Kirby Smart

Sounds to me like he is still focused on the “process”…….Damn them wins, gotta get ready for the future!

If he keeps this up he’s going to have a first season record like Saban at Alabama and Pete Carrol at USC. Not good. Need that crucial eighth win or he’s got to go.

Pretty sure neither of those teams (Bama or USC) won 50 games in the 5 years prior to them taking over……like Smart did.

basically checked out and barely paying attention I dont know who Shawn Oakman is Jim Grobe and Kirby both took over 50 wins in 5 years teams. Kirby maybe had a better season coaching than he did. maybe. but its is questionable.

Ain’t sold…..expected an improvement from the prior staff, not a team that went backwards. Hard to believe the offense got worse, so did the defense. Not sold on Smart’s ability to hire, could be his ultimate downfall. Chaney was a terrible hire imo….the D.C. was not an update either. The only thing that excites me is the recruiting, but if you do not have the staff…….I hope I am wrong about all of this.

If you don’t think that playing under essentially the 3rd entirely different coordinator and position coaching staff in 4 years has serious negative effects on the players and resulting performance… there’s no point in arguing with you in anything related to football

Don’t want to go off track here but the SEC is in the toilet. We’re one blocked field goal from 0-5. This could be the perfect storm that all of the media has been waiting for “SEC one team conference”. The Nick Saban effect is now in full force. Worst case Alabama loses because they truly haven’t played anybody with a pulse this year.

I am sure that the SEC was overrated or whatever they want to call it will be driven into ground by a lot of media folks.

Then next year a bunch of SEC teams will be ranked in the preseason and fans will complain.

The SEC hasnt been great in a few years.

I think that the dawgs need a positive data point heading into the off season.

A nice win, follow up with some big recruiting class, breaking weight room records in the spring and maybe guys staying out of trouble during the summer and we could have ourselves a pretty good season coming up.

Almost all of Georgia’s woes can be boiled down to having a sub-par foundation..the offensive line..Having a weak O line will always put the heebie-jeebies in a true freshman QB…thus the poor passing stats….and the less than expected output from the running game…and a defense that can’t get rested on the sideline.
As pointed out in the notes …”Georgia’s Kirby Smart is 7-5 in his first year as a head coach. He is 3-1 in nonconference games. TCU’s Gary Patterson 149-53 in 15 seasons, all at TCU, making him the school’s all-time winningest coach.”…..This is the very much the same situation as the GT game.
I’ll be happily surprised if Georgia keeps it close. I’m worried we get blown out.
On the other hand..if it all comes together and the Dawgs look great, it will put a happy ending to a frustrating season.

Yes the SEC is d-o-w-n. It’s been slipping for a couple of years…You lose coaches like Spurrier, Meyers, Richt (and Franklin?!!!) to name a few..and you’re going to be playing catch-up for awhile. But I think this is rock-bottom and the conference will be stronger next year..and on the rise. A lot of it is also because of the perfect storm of great QBs graduating at about the same time…and the penchant to schedule cup-cakes which really doesn’t force you to play better.
Nick Saban will make the SEC great again, because he has set the standard and every program will have to improve to stay competitive..you get better by playing great competition..not cupcakes.

He is by raising the bar. This matters to most SEC programs..especially Bama’s lil brother AU…and also LSU…and almost laughingly, TN.
But Georgia, Florida and SC also have the same demanding goals.. I think A&M..being in Texas..could be really great in the coming years also..they should be able to recruit really well. But right now, it’s Alabama and then everyone else. Roll Tide…you’re our Flagship!

Saban sits shotgun, and I climb in the back. As Burns guides the sedan past columned fraternity houses on the arbored Alabama campus, Saban mentions he's seen the Stones twice. In an attempt at levity, I tell him I'd recently tried to turn my four-year-old daughter on to the Stones but that she had responded by earnestly asking me, "Dad, how come the man in these songs can't sing?"

Saban spins around from the front seat and shoots me the bug zapper.

I can’t find the pre-game show on the UGA website. The next live event shows basketball. I’m in Panama City Beach, Fl., and all the radio stations like am750 have their online broadcasts blocked for the show and game. Does anybody have any ideas how I can listen to it?

If the UGA broadcast team is working this bowl game, you can get it on SiriusXM. As close as Panama City is to Georgia, I am pretty sure there will be a strong enough radio signal to pick this game up. Look at the Georgia network stations in the southwest corner of the state and get their station numbers. (Heck, I used to pick up the Dawgs when I listened to stations while in Philadelphia, Virginia, and NC. Have listened through really bad static on AM statiuons far away.) If you cannot get it that way, check the ESPN station in Panama City, Destin, or Tallahassee. They have the TV rights and carry some football games as well.

Noticed the AJC has a header announcing the big news that the ACC is winning more bowl games than the SEC.
The very fact that this is news is the best rebuttal I can think of. When people (Nerd fans most often) point this out to me, I’m going to say, “Yeah..that’s real news..this is the first year you’ve ever remarked on it”
Eventually, Clemson will lose Watson and will become post-Cam Auburn,
Kirby and Boom will cut into their recruiting…Florida will pick up it’s missing pieces etc. There’s too much talent in the region for things to stay upside down…the caveat is that much of the ACC is also in the South and there are so many good football teams in Florida competing for that talent.
But I think the SEC is at it’s lowest point this year..bottomed out.
(BTW Arkansas’ choke last night was epic..)

I hate all the importance put on exhibition games played 5 weeks after the season ends but agree we need some positive thoughts for the off season. It will feel a lot different than last year either way.

I don’t think it is critical that we win, but think it could be damaging if we get blown out like Colorado did last night. I fear that is a reasonable possibility given what we have seen from our offense this year. Chaney has had 5 weeks, let’s hope he didn’t waste that time like he did before facing Florida. A win would be a shot in the arm to a team, and program, that needs it.

It may not be enough to win, but I’ve got a feeling our running game is going to cut through TCU’s defense like a hot knife through butter. Won’t be surprised if Chubb and Michel both go for 150+ on the ground.

Outside of Bama, the SEC is a very weak conference the same as the last few years. I’d love a win today but I won’t be surprised with a loss. Teams with weak O lines, a shaky qb and a defense that can’t stop anybody from scoring tds in the red zone don’t win many games against legit competition.

I’m hoping things are better next season. If so, we can feel better about the direction we’re heading in. If not, the heat might get turned up on Kirby. Dawgnation is kind of grumpy right now, maybe McGarity gets shown the door and that would be a wonderful thing.

I agree with the comment that Kirby is overcoaching the defense. Shades of Grantham, with players wandering around before snap and having trouble getting on and off the field.

Other part of that is your defense must keep you in the game for the first half for this game plan to work.

        • Russ

Nope. What I see is an I formation into a stacked box repeatedly. Eventually in the second half, they get around to lining up in the pistol, spreading out, running wide and creating running lanes. That can usually work, but only after a wasted half running straight into a wall.

What you see as a grand plan, I see as stubborn play calling followed by desperately trying anything. Eight times this year, they stumbled across something that worked, and give times they didn’t.

We either wore them down, or changed something in our blocking in the 2nd half. Now THAT is UGA football. Nice job guys, will make the off season more enjoyable.

We changed our blocking, moving more laterally like our linemen are used to. Also finally started running out of the pistol. Didn’t “impose our will”.

      Like

      • Brandon

By “laterally” u must mean knocking the d-line 5 yards into the 2nd level then bouncing it outside if that’s where the hole is. Just post whatever makes you feel smarter

        • Russ

Nope, I mean running wide. How many times did our linemen pull in the first half? That would be close to zero because we continued to put Eason under center, line up in the I, and run directly into a stacked box. But I guess that passes for good coaching.

Second half, we spread out, lined up in the pistol, and pulled linemen to run wide. Completely different scheme and play calling.

Ok, folks. We only lose a few starters and have a lot of talent coming in. I’m not expecting an SEC championship next year but I do expect significant improvement. No excuse to not have that if this staff is worth their money. No excuse to not win the east next year.

Revolutionary stuff. Same story as the whole year. Offense is stymied when they try to run power formations but when they started playing more out of the spread, and calling outside runs, the offense got going.

If Kirby Smart just gets the heck out of the way on offense (the rumors are out there that he was “interfering”), this may work out OK. Playing in the spread doesn’t mean you have to be air raid, you can run through the spread.

So why hasn’t it been stuck to?

    Like

  119. daphne95

Yes, Eason missed passes, but I’m just not sure too many effective plays were available out of the power formations. In spread the plays were there in both the run and pass.

If Smart’s ego continues interfering, he’s going to go the way Muschamp did at Florida.

  135. Spent the first half griping to my buddy on text, but the second half proved me wrong. I don’t know much about the x’s and o’s, but those runs out of pistol were pretty good to me. Nick returned to old form today. I don’t understand the need to pitch him vs. Sony. Both great backs with different skill sets. I root for them both equally (Ok that’s a lie. Nick a little bit more because of what the UT cow pasture did to him).

-Thomson looked great. Wow. Keep it up kid.
-Not sure about the over coaching comment, but man, it sure seemed like we were trying to do a LOT before each snap on D
-Jacob needs more touch on his deep ball. I think it may be a trust issue. At times you just gotta put it in play and hope for the best. REALLY liked him scrambling today however. Want to see more of that in 17. Makes him way more dangerous.
-Chaney did not go away from what was working in the second half. Good for him! My worry is that the coaching staff seems to go away from what is working in the week leading up to the game. Seems like we fall back on a mindset instead of a strategy that utilizes the tools we have now.
    – For some reason I was reminded of all our shotgun two back sets that ran delay draws up the middle for little gains back in the Richt era. It took that staff a little time to get the right alignment with players and play calling. Some of it was coaching. Some of it was recruiting. Shit. What do I know. I’m half in the bag and glad the dawgs won.

Here’s my take on Jacob: have patience. Yes, he over throws. On the other hand, the guy he replaced can’t over throw because he isn’t physically able to do so. And from the start of the season until today, he has progressed on being able to run the huddle, read coverages, etc. He makes some plays that make me want to overlook the errant throws. That 75 yard pass to IM was made while he was being chased to his left, and he threw accurately back to his right. That’s physically hard to do. Yes, most of the yards were made after the catch, but the throw had to be made for any of it to happen. And he never quits. I’m looking forward to next year.

Eason is the future of GA football. This season he showed he has the tools and he played like a SEC freshman with abilities. He will run the show until he leaves for NFL if he stays healthy. Fromm May also have the tools but he will be behind Eason on reading SEC defenses and leading a SEC offense. Eason will continue to mature and with spring, summer and fall workouts, will be a quality SEC QB next year. As Scorp mentioned, the East should be ours. Returning D, returning RB studs, 2-year QB. Hopefully better OL. The future feels good right now.

    Happy New Year, Dawgs.

This may be the last games of my neighbor’s life so the win by Miami and now Georgia has made this season a happy one for him. Diagnosed with bone cancer (Stage III-IV) in June (he was given two months), he seemed bent on seeing the first game of Richt’s year and that has now stretched to seeing the NC games. As his established caregiver, I’ve gained weight gain when participating in some of those carbos my wife has been preparing for him (as well as including him in her prayers) and the season fits right into his diet when it comes to pecan pie and eggnog laced with a tequila shot while watching the games. I get ACC shoved into my face every day, but he is also sympatico in cheering for the SEC and, especially, the Dawgs. Next season…?, … but he won’t give permission to use his name on the Jumbotron whenever we play GT. It was going to be a name that would send him into Bulldog lore and perpetuity since it expresses so well the Dawg attitude toward the gnats. His health is outwardly better (he had disdained treatment after the diagnosis and has only had pain medication since June), his appetite has improved and it looks like we may now go for an Emory clinical in Jan. It already is a happy new year here.

Hopefully, this team will abide next year with the return of so many players and the number of excellent recruits Kirby can get for this team. Hopefully, we can return to the day of Bobo’s excellent shiny offensive machine without having O-coaching turnover next year.

When you’ve got coaches strongly alluding to their preference of using their bowl prep time as a glorified Spring practice instead of an important and serious game, it’s about what one can expect….especially with new coaches working with a new team/system. Coaches like Paul Johnson, on the other hand…have their system installed and humming and can concentrate on winning the game….and beating an SEC team is a huge goal for most coaches…so they can gloat….Georgia Tech fans already think they could win the SEC if they were only in it.
THIS is what the NC playoffs have wrought. The only thing that really matters is the final four…or possibly a New Years day game…
