ESPN is already blaming the loss on the change from Kiffin to Sark. It undoubtedly had some effect, but it’s hard to say how much. Clemson looked pretty darn good on their own.

Did Sark blow the coverages on those 4th quarter TDs? His O put 30 plus points on the board. Much like UGA in 2012, it seems like Sark put enough points on the board to win if the vaunted Bama D didn’t just collapse in the 4th quarter. Maybe Sark should call Mike Bobo for tips on how to handle getting scapegoated by segments of his fan (sic) base.

Many times, Clemson’s defense was signaling to each other where the play was going to go prior to the snap.
It was almost as if someone had provided Clemson with Alabama’s offensive playbook and signals. 😉

Would someone be so kind as to explain the question of the “pics” pass routes Clemson was so successful running last night. Are they legally questionable? Do people confuse this with “illegal pic” calls in basketball?
Saban was upset about some aspect of it (besides that it worked). Clemson scored twice on that play on the right side of the endzone. It’s very effective when done right…but something seems fishy about it. ?? It kind of looks like downfield cut blocking..but I don’t know.
Any opinions or knowledge on this????

Pick / Rub routes are semi-legal. You have a buffer from the line of scrimmage of 1 yard where a WR can legally make contact with a defender (kind of like 5 yard buffer for a DB to jam a WR). After that, it would be an illegal block downfield before the pass is thrown. For a legal rub route, the WR wants to run their route in a way as to make the two DBs collide with each other. It is still legal for the WR to make contact with the other DB so long as they do not adjust their route so as to make contact.
It looked like a clean rub to me. The DB tried to jam the outside WR to the inside. This took him and the WR right into the path of the other DB. He had to go around the two allowing Renfrow to get open.

The final play was OK, the LOS was the 2-yard line. I’m not so sure about some of Clempson’s other big pass plays.

Thanks…complicated for sure…wonder how a ref is supposed to watch all of that and still see the simple stuff. On the last TD..it looked to me like the Clemson player threw the block well before the ball was thrown. Just wondering. I’ll bet I can get a lot of “insight” on it on the ‘Bama boards, though!

There’s no question his absence had some effect. But whether he could have focused on the task it hand and gotten the job done…well, we’ll never know.
Clemson was the better team. They had a good game plan and executed it well. Congrats to them.

OK ,I’ll be the foil…..what am I missing? Bama puts up 40 plus with Kiffin and 31 without him. I see a connection but apparently knowledgeable football fans do not. I’ve said this previously on this blog….Kiffin is a prick but he is a talented OC and play caller. I stand by my previous position that a superior organization protects and insulates problematic but talented people who can contribute to the overall goal of the Process. This lose falls on Saban for not being able to accommodate Kiffin for just one more week.
