What Georgia fans are hoping for over the next month

Last night’s title game had a distinctive Georgia undercurrent to it.

Outsourcing is a bitch.

The fact that Watson badly wanted to don the R&B, yet we didn’t want him is gut-wrenching to this day. Even worse, we chose future punter Brice Ramsey over him.

      • Richt’s comment that “He’s going to win a national championship for someone one”, coupled with the fact that we were late to offer is what kills me.

It seems like once we actually realized what he was, we were interested, but we were lazy and got beat to the punch.

This is the lie that will never end. We needed a QB desperately in the class ahead of Watson. We were zeroed in on Ramsey. We wanted to make sure Ramsey didn’t flip to Bama, which was a serious concern at that point. Ramsey signs and Bobo is in the truck to Gainesville to offer Watson in person, a full year before he enrolls at Clemson.

Watson committed as a sophomore. UGA wanted Watson badly. They chose to make sure they had Ramsey in hand before the full court press on Watson. Bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush.

Did it work out? No. As they say in sales, 2nd place doesn’t pay very well. Richt got beat, but there was a rationale behind it. It wasn’t just some haphazard approach. Also, every recruiting report from Watson was that Chad Morris was going to build an entire offense around Watson that closely matched his high school offense, and that he would stay for Watson’s entire career.

If Watson truly wanted to don the R&B as you claim, he had every opportunity. It was an uphill sell for Richt the whole way and he just never got it done with Watson.

If QB recruiting and roster management were easy, Saban would not have started a true freshman this year. It’d have been a RedShirt Junior.

The days of stockpiling QBs like FSU did in the 90s is likely over as QBs expect to come in and compete as a freshman, which is probably why Lawrence is headed to Clemson. He’s #2 on depth chart on arrival versus #3 at UGA.

This is not an apologia for Richt, it’s just not as simple as “richt= bad.” I mean good lord, he had the best run of QB play over 14 years as anyone in the country. He whiffed on Lemay and Ramsey, but I’d say he nailed Eason. The book is still to be written on Park, but for whatever reason, he wanted out.

Well said, but we shouldn’t let facts get in the way of a good narrative. You can look at the recruiting profiles of Ramsey, Park and Watson. All were 4 star recruits with multiple offers from all the big schools.

              Like

              • And that good narrative is always a great hind sight one. After all, in some folks minds, everything wrong with UGA football is still the former staffs fault. Hell, Eason sucks and that is the former staffs fault. (sarcasm)
                UGA fans gotta love em.
Do not know which is worse football fans and hind sight or politics and hind sight.

There is a large segment of the population that doesn’t give a third of a turd about logic, reason, or truth. They would rather devolve into an unironic circlejerk of emotion reactions to things that didn’t happen than discuss reality. As far as they are concerned, not offering Watson until he was a Junior in order to secure Ramsey is the same thing as spitting in his face, calling him a stupid n-word, and telling him that he will never get an offer from Georgia. Welcome to post-modernism.

This is a mortal blow to the “We aren’t Bama, why even try” mentality. A mobile quarterback from Gainesville who didn’t fit UGA’s offensive philosophy is probably the greatest college quarterback of all time. A nice guy cheerleader named Dabo and a school with a fraction of our resources and tradition just rode his arms and legs to a championship.
This should have been our night, our moment. Incompetence? You bet. When Herschel Walker, part two, heads over to Clemson with little resistance, it’s time to admit we’ve had big issues. Hopefully, this historically ironic and bitter pill will drive us out of the self-pitying doldrums and through the now wide open doors of success.

That simply isn’t true — CMR/Bobo simply didn’t have Watson high on their totem pole, and only offered him after Ramsey enrolled (they were afraid Ramsey might look elsewhere otherwise).

Watson let it be known on quite a few occasions — both during and after his recruitment — that the UGA coaches didn’t want him.

Nonsense, Georgia has never had a quarterback of Watson’s caliber, exchange Watson for Hutson Mason, Greyson Lambert or Eason this year and Georgia is in the playoff at least twice, with a real shot to win it all IMO. Imagine pairing Watson with Gurley, Michel, and Chubb. The offense would have actually been unstoppable instead of the pretend kind when you lead the league in scoring, but can’t score against SC and Tech at the end of games. Clemson’s defense gave up more points to Bama than Washington did. 31 pts is below Bama’s average for the season, but it’s nothing to thumb your nose at.

Greatest of all time? He was arguably not even the best qb in 2016 seeing as how Lamar Jackson beat him out for the heisman. Before you criticize, put yourself in the staff at the time’s shoes. Ramsey was more of a dual threat. In addition to his rocket arm, his punting abilities are second to none. If he can’t boot it 35 yards on 4th down, he can consistently hit a safety in the numbers 45 yards downfield on 3rd down. That kind of talent doesn’t come along every day, thank goodness we could see the diamond through the Wing-T rough.

In other related news, after the game Deshawn Watson expressed a desire to play a 5th year as a graduate student at either Miami or CSU. However, both Richt and Bobo declined in unison, stating, “we don’t run that kind of offense.”

Richt took things a step further by reminding Watson that “life is about people, not rings. Rings collect dust.”

Sure- but I don’t see it as this overwhelming indictment on the inadequacy of the previous administration. Recruiting misses happen and those players go on to do great things at other places. It’s not an uncommon tale. Hell – Alabama let Jameis Winston get out of Alabama and go to FSU and I heard he was pretty good or something. It does feel like sometimes that folks around here just need to find any perceived slight to have an excuse to bitch about the previous administration.

That Watson didn’t go to UGA is a major reason Richt is no longer our coach, but every UGA fan that followed recruiting was immensely excited when Ramsey committed to UGA over Bama.

Bama subsequently accepted the commitment of another QB the next day, in that they were slow playing that guy, waiting on what Ramsey was going to do. That’s how highly thought of Ramsey was. Turns out, the light never turned on for Ramsey. That’s football.

Hindsight is 20-20 on this one, sadly.

interestingly, I don’t see much in the way of the vitriol directed to Kirby for whiffing on Lawrence. Eason was gift wrapped to Kirby.Fromm wanted to be a dawg from birth.

Watson was a 4 star, middle of the top of the pack QB from GA. Lawrence is a #1 in the country QB from GA. If anything, it’s worse that Kirby isn’t getting Lawrence.

That being said, Clemson is signing a #1 QB in the 2017 class, who is ranked well ahead of Fromm. By the time Lawrence arrives on campus, Eason will hopefully be playing his way into an early departure and first round pick, which will put UGA and Clemson in the same category for potential playing time.

I don’t understand the same people who lost their mind at the slightest Richt recruiting snafu have unending grace to offer to Kirby.(watson was no small thing)

What you’re saying is this, in a nutshell:

Kirby executed a strategy to recruit Lawrence and failed.
Richt executed a strategy to recruit Watson and failed.

Kirby’s failure isn’t his fault. Richt’s failure is his fault.

Reality is both failed. It’s that simple. The hope now for the Bulldogs is that Lawrence is closer to Mitch Mustain than Deshaun Watson. That’s really all there is to it.

I’m not choosing sides here, but you are correct that there is a narrative to that effect. Seems people close to the situation in Cartersville are convinced that Richt got in late on Lawrence, partly because of his reluctance to jump all over high school freshmen and sophomores. The story goes Richt ignored Lawrence at Dawgnight as a sophomore, when Dabo was already in a full court press, and we didn’t ramp things up until Smart took over. They claim it is a testament to Smart’s recruiting prowess that we leapfrogged the Vols at number two and even made it close.

My big takeaway is how sick I am of trying to run a Pro Style offense when the state produces a metric ton of talented dual purpose spread guys (a complaint that stretches across two staffs).

The point of college football is to win college football games, not to be an NFL developmental program. Not saying I want to go to Auburn’s extreme, but I see no reason our offense couldn’t look like what Clemson and Ole Miss do.

Yep – and this is the primary reason I was less than thrilled with hiring Kirby. I just don’t see the point of trying to out-Bama Bama when the talent base is there to do something different that would uniquely define Georgia a la Malzahn / Baylor (less the bad stuff) as something other than Bama-lite. We know what Bama’s closest thing to kryptonite is and it sure as shit isn’t lining up and playing big dumb Will Muschamp caveman football against them.

            Like

            • I get that. The reason I was ok with Kirby is that I trust him more than anyone else that was available to modernize the infrastructure and support staff of the program, which had to be done before anything else. Clemson laid the groundwork from 2009-13, hopefully we’re doing that now.

If Kirby turns out to be Boom 2.0, that will suck, but I think the next guy will be primed no only with a loaded roster, but with all the other aspects needed to compete.

I know we disagree on Kirby (I’m actually indifferent-I’m not convinced he is or isn’t just another Muschamp), but the behind the scenes aspects of the program are already significantly improved from just a year ago.

BTW, Kyle Whittingham would have been my choice.

  14. I’ve been critical of the previous staff’s decision on the recruiting of Deshaun Watson. He was DJ Shockley all over again, and we missed … it happens.

Every school in the Southeast recruits Georgia and Florida. It will always be that way. Blue chip players are going to leave the state … even those who grew up as Georgia fans. Tallahassee and Gainesville are closer for many South Georgians than Athens. Knoxville is closer than Athens for players from Northwest Georgia. Auburn is closer than Athens for kids from West Georgia. Clemson & USCe have to recruit Georgia to be relevant. Many kids from Atlanta are the children of transplants or legacies from other schools and have no UGA allegiance. Alabama is going to recruit from wherever they find players as a national school.

The best thing Kirby and his staff can do (and they appear to be doing it) is to identify the best players from the state that fit what we want to do and fill needs on the roster. Get those guys locked up early and recruit nationally when it makes sense. You do that and the roster takes care of itself. Then the question is whether the staff can take the chicken and make chicken salad out of it. That will be the measuring stick for the success of the leadership in Athens … nothing more, nothing less.

Bigger picture take is UGA fans obsess continually over this same 20/20 issue on specific players and who we get our of the Top 20 guys. With two successful, powerhouse programs positioned close to every surrounding border (OK just one in TN) we are more in a position to be raided than any other state with significant HS talent.

We will never build this wall people speak of, and everyone needs to get a handle on this, it is an unjust attack on any coach. You will have better years than others at various times and need to keep a focus on talent within, and outside of the state of Georgia. Not the best way to evaluate a coach as a recruiter. There was a time when “home talent” was easier to protect but TV, interstates, increased recruiting dollars, etc. have all changed that…especially in Georgia.

28 players and 6 starters is actually way less than I would have guessed. That’s an average of 16% of scholarship players per team assuming none of the 28 are walk ons. Doesn’t seem like too significant of a number considering that Auburn had 36 players from Georgia on their roster in 2016.

What does it really matter if we can’t coach the players from Georgia?

Honestly, this kind of stuff doesn’t make sense to me. I know Watson was a highly ranked recruit out of Georgia, but a good number of those kids that are at Clemson from Georgia didn’t play their football at Georgia because we went after recruits that were held in higher sporting regard. The difference is that those 3* players from Georgia that went to Clemson simply played harder and were coached better at Clemson than the 4* and 5* players that went to Georgia.

This is getting back to the talent issue…which is a complete non-issue. Georgia has had talent. Georgia has always had talent. It has had talent from Georgia. It has had talent from New Jersey. It has had talent from Pennsylvania. It has had talent from North Carolina. It has had talent from all over this great country over the years. Look at the number of NFL players that have come through Athens and you’ll begin to understand the incredible amount of talent levels that have played on Sanford Stadium grass. The fact that Vince Dooley, Ray Goff, Jim Donnan, and Mark Richt have combined to win a single national title for Georgia since 1980 considering the amount of sheer athletic prowess that has been at this University is embarrassing and, quite simply, unacceptable.

Clemson has now won two titles since we won our last…and we’re out here flopping around, squeaking by Nicholls State, not even in the running for our own (lousy and dysfunctional) conference division, shining our prestigious Belk, Music City, and Liberty Bowl trophies. All the while, we’ll tell anyone who will listen that it’s our offensive coordinator’s fault….or our defensive coordinator’s fault…or our special teams…or our coach….but, remember that time back in 1980 when we won the national championship? Man…we need a time machine.

We are the Uncle Rico of college football.

Clemson winning the title in 2016 has nothing to do with talent somehow stolen from Georgia. Clemson winning the title in 2016 has everything to do with a serious football program. We are not a serious football program. We are pretenders.

    Just my opinion.

2017 has to be the year we go from pretender to contender. If it don’t happen then it may never happen.

What does that even mean? What’s your remedy?

I’m not sure there is a remedy…outside of the athletic department and University going “all in” for the football program. I hate to use that cliched phrase, but it’s the truth.

That’s the only thing that could possibly be considered a remedy. No more micro-management. Turn everything over to Kirby and let him do exactly what he wants, when he wants, and how he wants…all the while providing him with basically anything he asks for: Kirby wants to hire 10 new analysts? Done. Kirby wants structural or aesthetic improvements to some football facility? Done. Kirby wants to cough up the salary required to hire the best and the brightest position and unit coaches? Done. No hesitation.

Now, another discussion could be had whether or not UGA should take that path and could (or even would) grant that kind of power and sway to the head football coach, but in my opinion, that’s what it would take to turn Georgia into a serious football program. It’s also not to say that Kirby would be the one to actually get it done at Georgia, either. I’m willing to give him the pass on this past season, but let’s be honest…there was nothing that happened on the football field in 2016 from a coaching standpoint that made jaws drop. Maybe he does turn into a great head coach…that much, however, is unknown.

Can anyone name one position coach at Clemson other than Venable? I don’t particularly like our current OC but Smart does and that is all that matters. I knew Dabo when he was a grad assistant and never would have thought he’d make a HC at a major university. It just proves that hard work, innovative thought, and good recruiting pays off. Where is the next coach with all that? Franklin? Mason? Mcelvain? Maybe even Smart!

UGA will never allow a coach to have that kind of power and control. Just wont happen, ever. Get it out of your mind.

One of the best posts I’ve read here. It does a good job of summing up how the curse of the “Georgia Way” goes beyond any one coach, AD or university president to stretch out over decades.

“Est Satis Mediocris” (average is good enough) should be the motto of those who run the University.

We are so far removed from those two teams that played last night. Far, far, removed. We clearly need to be 3 deep in beastly linemen on both sides of the ball.

Good think Clempson didn’t fire Dabo after that “miserable” 10-3 season a few years ago.

Since the question was “What Georgia fans are hoping for over the next month”, here’s what I hope to see:
    – Add a cherry (or three) to a truly awesome recruiting class. Some of whom are already in class.
    – Replace (or demote to analyst) at least two of the underperforming assistant coaches. Get a REAL OC and/or QB coach. I honestly don’t know what Beamer did all year. The STs actually got worse from 2015 in all aspects. The only improved player would be Blankenship – and it’s my understanding that was Butler’s influence.

That’s really all I could ask for in one month.

Next month is about closing out recruiting.

Two guys we are predicted 100% to get are Bryant & Warner, in state top 200 natl guys.

Solomon would be a great get, he’s a top 30 Natl guy who is in state too but leaning Bama.

Also need to make sure none of the current commits flip.
