“It’s pretty much a Dave & Buster’s on their campus.”

Damn, the JPMIPF™ hasn’t even officially opened its doors yet, and Georgia’s already behind in the facilities arms race again.  What’s a McGarity to do?  (Besides pull up the donor list again, I mean.)

  1. Good grief … I thought the university presidents wanted the student-athlete more integrated into the broader community. The current version of the arms race separate them more than ever. Whatever the market will bear, but this is ridiculous.

On the other hand, if you’ve been to Clemson it’s not exactly a hoppin’ place to begin with from a something to do off campus point of view. When touching a rock and running down a hill is considered excitement, that nap room seems like it would come in handy after while.

This would be a very accurate post. Clemson may have a mini-hill and a fancy indoor slide, but once outside those walls, it’s a barren redneck wasteland with car dealerships as far as the eye can see.

In other words, Clemson, SC ain’t Athens, GA.

Now, there is something to be said for the fact that Clemson is willing to spend more than UGA on their football program despite being 24 places behind UGA in total athletic revenue. They’re getting what they pay for…and what they paid for (and received) this season was a national championship.

We (UGA) just aren’t quite willing to do that.

What cool way to re-coup player stipends.

I keep reading about the new locker room at Sanford: any update on that or does anyone know the timeline?

Reminds me of an old Sports Illustrated article. SI sent a reporter to Clemson to interview William “Refrigerator” Perry’s little brother, Michael Dean Perry. The reporter noted that Michael had all the latest electronics (back in that day that was probably a TV and VHS player) in his dorm room, but there was not a single book in sight.

    Future happy talk out Clemson:

“The OL bowling team leads the other teams in the intra-team bowling league and look like they are ready for the season. But the secondary is cleaning up on the mini-golf tournament. So far this spring, no injuries reported on the slide or volleyball court. Some players are a little upset they don’t have a tennis court or an indoor pool, but there are preliminary sketches being prepared.”

Wow…what will these kids do when they graduate and don’t get a paycheck from the NFL?

This glitz might land Clemson what, 2 or 3 impressionable 5 stars a year? Enough to win the NC with 1 second left. Good investment.

Sure does make the medieval stretching rack, whipping post and back-breaker Kirby installed in our IPF seem less appealing.

Robert Edwards says they may want to re-think the sand volleyball court.

That was my first thought too. (Followed by: is the team nutritionist really going to let them at BBQ grills? I’ve tried working out after Fox Bros. and it was painful.)

Normally, I would jump on the bandwagon to criticize the excess of college football. However, I think what Clemson has done is brilliant. They are following a Google model of showering their employees with benefits. The old capitalistic model of treating your employees with the whipping post and stretching rack is obsolete when there is a need for the absolute best in one’s profession. Get great people and keep them focused. Somebody else
Less talented in football can do their laundry and wash their cars. There are very few people who can run the 40 in 4.2 seconds or throw a football accurately 60 yards when chased by 300 lb. killers. It is easy to understand how good you would be at your chosen work if you didn’t have to spend several hours a day attending to the hassle of things like housework, cooking, cleaning, and all the other irritations of daily life. I just wish I had had this lifestyle when I was reading Plato,Aristotle and Kierkegaard.

  13. Will their Dave and Buster’s include crazy waitresses who shoot players dead while asleep on the couch for cheating on them?

Never see this at UGA without a full-time cop to arrest the rule-breakers.

Further proof that there is enough money in FBS Athletics to provide cash stipends to all scholarshiped athletes in all sports. The suits just spend it on baubles and glitter, instead.

  17. On the surface, CKS’ statement – ‘I don’t know if it’s something everybody’s going to be able to keep up with. I certainly think you want to have top of the line facilities with the people you compete against. But to say we’re going to go out there and do exactly what they did, I don’t think that’s the case’- it seems a little defeatist. But it’s really just an acknowledgment that the new CKS regime does not need bells and whistles to get the job done. CKS is not building a program based on recruits who get pumped about playing putt-putt. CKS is smart enough not get drawn into emulating a red-neck school.
