During Mark Richt’s time as Georgia’s coach, the policy was always to let players transfer anywhere they wanted. Then Richt left, and Georgia’s policy changed – and so, apparently, has Richt’s new school.
Miami is not permitting running back Gus Edwards, a graduate transfer, go to Syracuse or Pittsburgh, two ACC schools that are on Miami’s schedule in 2017. The Palm Beach Post reported on the story Tuesday.
It’s not clear what Richt’s role is in the decision to block. His athletics director, Blake James, told The Palm Beach Post that it’s the school’s policy.
“Institutionally, our policy has been that we would not do that for a school we’re going to play in the upcoming season,” James told the newspaper.
I guess life’s not so short at the beach.

Nah, there are a certain three that, at varying degrees, defend all things Richt and jump to bash Kirby at any chance. And definitely the opposite occurs just as regularly. I personally hated to see Richt go, but quickly got on board with the change. I just don’t deal in absolutes, so I’ve never been firmly in one camp and against the other. They both certainly have their flaws, but I haven’t bashed either man. And to be honest, all the negativity sometimes has the effect of getting me down on both coaches.

AD wouldn’t enforce the policy if it weren’t supported by Richt. Unless this is a university wide policy. Either way, I hope it is changed and the players are allowed to transfer. If Miami is worried about Syracuse & Pittsburgh, they are a lot farther away from a conference championship than they would like to believe.

I’m all for players transferring pretty much anywhere…but I would have to draw the line at teams on the impending schedule. There’s potentially an issue with sharing the playbook, don’t you think? Potentially. Even if it is Syracuse and Pittsburgh.

if the kid graduated, there is zero debt owed to the university. He’s a free man as far as I’m concerned.

It should be written into every scholarship that once a player graduates, he has the right to make any deal he wants.

Perhaps CMR has changed his mind but I doubt it. UGA did things he didn’t like, but he wouldn’t criticize them openly for it.
That said, till the players are paid a full salary, they should be able to transfer to any school and play immediately.

Always felt he was wrong to allow players to go to schools which would pit them against UGA. SEC schools should have been blocked, as well as scheduled opponents during their playing time. He was wrong at Georgia, Miami has it right for undergrad transfers, imo.
