Georgia’s first conference opponent in 2017 is Mississippi State. As Marc Weiszer points out, there will be lots of familiar faces decked out in maroon for that one.
Georgia is also losing a support staff member. D.J. Looney, an offensive graduate assistant who worked with Sam Pittman’s offensive line, is returning to Mississippi State, his alma mater, according to Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports. He will help coach tight ends and offensive tackles.
Former Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham now holds that same position at Mississippi State. Former Georgia linebacker Christian Robinson is a graduate assistant again under Grantham, coaching the inside linebackers. Georgia opens SEC play against Mississippi State in Athens on Sept. 23 against a team that now includes former Georgia players Chauncey Rivers and Johnathan Abram.
All I can say is that if we’re not roundly mocking third-and-Grantham after the game, Jim Chaney ought to be in some serious trouble. Even John Lilly managed that feat in his one-game career as offensive coordinator.
Damn, I didn’t realize Grantham had left Louisville. I just looked it up, and is Wikipedia correct that Louisville and Mississippi State swapped defensive coordinators?

It is.

I had to do the same search last night about Grantham. Had no idea. Kinda weird.

That’s a strong set of contenders for the coveted towel boy position.

Last two games, Chaney’s offense has scored 44 and 45 points against Grantham’s defense.
So we got that goin’ for us, which is nice.

A Chaney offense scored 44 points? Surely this is fake news.

Forget it Russ, it’s Grantham.
If points are scored before the defense gets lined up, they still count.

Maybe I’m missing something, but wasn’t Robinson actually a position coach at Ole Miss last year?
Now he’s going back to be a GA under “all hat, no cattle”?
Something doesn’t add up there.

I think Robinson was a GA at Ole Miss as well

I know he started as one, but I thought he had been promoted to actual position coach. He’s 4 years out, he shouldn’t be a GA still.
Something is strange there.

Maybe they keep getting him because we are on the schedule.

Lily was 2-0 as OC. He also called the bowl game against Penn State after the 2015 season. I was really hoping that he would get the job before Richt hired Schottenheimer. I like the way he called the game. Nice and simple. He didn’t get cute. Took what the defense gave him. When he found a weakness he would continue to exploit it. When they over-corrected he, he hit them with the deep ball.

I agree. Lilly should have gotten the job over Shitty…er…Schotty. CMR might very well still be the HC in Athens if he had hired Lilly as OC. Somebody needs to explain the importance of hiring quality assistant coaches to Kirby. But then, I have a feeling he is going to have to learn that lesson the hard way. Kirby strikes me as that kind of guy–the kind who has to learn the hard way.

Robinson and Grantham are 2 of a kind. They deserve each other.

When I saw the header for this thread, I though it was going to be another story about the Vols.

This game may actually be a barometer for the direction of the Georgia program under CKS–rising or dropping. Remember, this Missy State team beat an Ole Piss team that stomped the Dawgs like there was no tomorrow last season. At least we get ’em in Athens.
