University of Cincinnati source: Cincinnati intends to hire Willie Martinez as cornerbacks coach pending completion of the HR process.

Ironically, UT coach Butch Jones, who fired Martinez,
came to UT from Cincinnati. Martinez was at Tennessee 4 years.— Jimmy Hyams (@JimmyHyams) February 10, 2017

Is Tubberville still at Cincy or did they run him off? I guess, not lucky enough to have Willie end up at Florida or somewhere useful.

Tubbs is gone. They hired Luke Fickell, the guy who was DC at Ohio State (and he was the head coach there for one year between Tressel and Corch).

Has Willie ever left a job on his own accord for a better position?

Yes, when he was hired at UGA. 🙂

Man, that’s gotta be tough, and hard on the ol’ ego…going from DC at UGA to DB coach at UT to DB coach at Cinci. What’s next — special teams coach at Presbyterian?
He is and has been well compensated, so I don’t feel all that bad for the guy or anything; but I suspect he looks back on his UGA days as the ultimate halcyon days.

Yes – and those would be his salad days.

The way coaching salaries have changed in recent years I’ll bet he earns a similar salary now as DB coach at Cinci as he did as DC at UGA.

He is guaranteed to make at least $422K this year as a DB coach, a good bit more than he ever made at Georgia as DC.
Plus he will likely get a multi-year contract as an assistant, which were fighting words for an assistant when he was at Georgia.

I suspect he doesn’t look back on his UGA days at all, since he never taught his DB’s to look back either.

He also got fired from Oklahoma after a season of his DBs getting torched.

I don’t think that word “ironically” means what Jimmy Hyams thinks it means. Good thing words aren’t part of his craft. Oh, wait …

I’m very disappointed. I just thought Willie was a shitty DC. Now I learn that he was a shitty position coach, too. What in the world was CMR thinking when he (1) kept him on as DB coach and (2) promoted the guy to DC? It was guaranteed to blow up in CMR’s face and ultimately this is what cost CMR his job IMHO. He used up all the cred he had by hanging on to Willie too long. That came back to haunt him later.
