The gift that keeps on giving

Georgia’s 2013 signing class, ladies and gentlemen.

There are more former Georgia players that will be going to the [NFL] combine than those that finished their college careers there.

Yes, the massive brain fart that went into the 2015 Florida game plan didn’t help matters, but Mark Richt isn’t Georgia’s head coach now because several years’ worth of poor roster management decisions came back to bite him in the arse.

50 wins in the last 5 years, 20 in the last 2 all while getting bitten in the ass by poor roster management. So let’s fire him when he’s pulling in the best recruiting class of his entire tenure. We really showed him what’s what.

Go back and average how often Georgia has won it (SEC) before Richt…..I think you will see that he did it at a much better rate. Maybe Georgia football ain’t as good s we think it should be…you think??

They should call you Good Idea Gregg! I did just that. Pre Richt UGA averaged a SEC championship every 6.7 years (per cfp.com UGA collected 10 between 1933-2000). During Richt’s tenure UGA averaged 1 every 7.5 years. By your own logic they were worse under Richt which we all know isn’t true. it is OK the be a fan of the man and sill acknowledge a change was needed, the two ideas are not mutually exclusive. It’s not my place to tell you to stop being so mediocre Gregg. If your content with mediocrity then rage on brother but you’re not pulling me down with you.

I’m appreciative for what Richt did and how he handled himself, but he came into an ideal situation. The bar went way down with Goff and only went up slightly from there with Donnan. Richt showed what could be accomplished in his first 5 years at UGA, but couldn’t sustain it. A decade without a title and 8 years without a BCS bowl speaks for itself, especially after what was accomplished early in Richt’s tenure. People have a tendency not to factor in anything other than the most recent history so thanks for providing a larger sample to give more perspective on Richt’s tenure.

In Richt’s defense, he had the 2nd best team in the SEC a few times over his career where losing in the SECCG knocked him out of a BCS berth. 2012 for instance, 12-1 entering the game. Loses and doesn’t get the championship game or a sugar bowl consolation because they picked Florida.

doesn’t really change reality, but losing in the SECCG is a really big kick in the pants as it relates to bowl selection.

yeah, but 04 and 07 were two of his most talented teams and he couldn’t even get them into the SECCG b/c of his propensity for brain fart performances against lesser teams (though we would’ve lost in 04 anyway)

LAWD!!!….Go back and look again. Georgia won it in, ’42, ’48, ’59, ’68, ’80 and ’82…..this is outright SEC champions, co champions or SEC eastern championships NOT included (apples to apples). Georgia joined the SEC in ’33, to me….that looks like an average of every 11.3 years before Richt compared to 7.5 with Richt….a BIG difference. I will go back to another one of my points, “maybe Georgia football ain’t as good as we think it should be”. BTW, apparently there are two different Greg’s on here, I am the one who responded originally…..I hope this helps…

looks like debating with you could be entertaining…debate all you want. If you want to throw SEC co-championships in to bolster your argument (prior to Richt), throw in how many times we were eastern champions (apples to apples). By my count, it was 4 times that Richt’s teams won it. That is NOT including outright SEC championships years. Let’s see…..that is 4 + 2 (SEC champions) divided by 15…. you can do the rest and compare, right??

I do believe had Richt won more East titles, say half of his tenure he very may still be the coach. I’ll never heal from that incredible ’07 team.

Apparently you are missing the whole point…..and that is from looking at the history of the school, he winning more frequently than the average. I for one appreciate what he did at Georgia and hope it all works out for Kirby and the dawgs. For me, the bar has been set (Richt), just do not want to go backwards…..or why else make a change.

you seem to have inferred from me that Richts’ win/loss record is diminished by his lack of titles. I never said that. But a lack a of titles, even winning the East over a 15 year span should get you fired. The man still left an incredible legacy and set the bar for his predecessor. Wins and losses don’t mean much without context, it’s all relative. There were some bad losses and the record vs top 25 teams left much to be desired.

                • Do you mean ’08 because the ’07 team finished the season ranked with 2 or 3 nationally? That incredible ’08 team that lost its left tackle on the first day of fall practice and had something like 20 contributing players miss time throughout the season?

That team underachieved. Some of that underachieving was self-inflicted. Some was beyond the program’s control.

That equivalency metric is very subjective. I’d say:

SEC co-championships > Eastern division championships
Eastern division championships > Eastern division co-championships
                  SEC championships = SEC co-championships

Division co-champs don’t play in the CCG at all, whereas historically Conference co-champs may just not have played each other that year.

The conference was smaller in the early times. Fewer teams means thicker spread. It would take a little math to adjust the wins to the number of teams competing.

No one argues your 0 for 10, and we all wish there would have been another one or two SEC titles. But let’s not diminish those years entirely, nor pretend UGA are regularly treated to SEC titles. I believe Mark Richt’s years not only made UGA relative again in CFB, but produced the only SEC titles since the league went to an eight team conference schedule. And while we only went to two title games in the last ten, we dominated, and led, the #1 team in the nation in the first half in one of those games, and led the #1 team in the nation a few times in the other, only to be a few yards short at the end. And another team during that period, 2007, was clearly playing as good as any team in the country at the end of the year. o while there were disappointments during the 10 years, it wasn’t exactly a wasteland or black hole. Actually hard to find many 10 year periods in UGA history that exceeded that, sad to say. And even at the end, 40 wins in 4 years isn’t exactly a reason to call your shrink.

Was it time for a change, some new approaches? Probably so, although we didn’t have to handle it so crudely. I don’t know why everyone who wanted CMR fired has to pee on every single comment that gives the man credit for doing a very good job in his time at UGA. He is gone, and virtually every single UGA fan supports his successor (I know of exactly none who don’t), but the haters just cannot get past this. Grow up, and move on. I see enough about hysterical, bed wetters who cannot face life’s realities daily without someone continually finding something negative to say about a HC who gave us much to be proud about. Look at the whole of what he did and not focus on how to twist things to suit your agenda. Why does this have to be a divisive issue, especially coming from the side that got their way? Makes no sense to me but the passion would be great if channeled in a positive direction.

I am in agreement with almost everything you said in paragraph 1. It’s the part in paragraph 2 where you put words in my mouth claiming I, an individual not a group, wanted Richt fired and am now a “hater” because my definition of success is a little different from yours that we’ll disagree.

I was of the mind that thought the program owed it to Richt to give him one more year. And when the program decided he would not be back, I moved on to the future. I am certainly not diminishing all of Richt’s accomplishments and ability to raise the level of the program, I don’t think I said that above. He was absolutely the right man for the job in 2001 and he eternally has my gratitude and affection as the Coach of the University of Georgia. I will support Kirby until he gives me reason not to… but not blindly. Kirby certainly deserves plenty of criticism for how 2016 played out. But it was year 1 and I personally believe he has some equity still available until the collective turns on him.

People are nuanced we don’t have to be pegged strictly has Richt haters and Kirby lovers. It’s also funny you telling me to grow up and move on in the same thread where the OP is bring up the last five years but OK. Maybe you can also explain how I am no facing life’s realities. All I can give is a “huh?” on that one.

It was your “0 championships but cling to your 50 years” comment I was responding to. Not really any way to interpret that except negative. And that was my point, with a guy who did so much, stop digging for negatives. I see it every day, multiple times. And most everyone that makes them are haters who will never get over the great divide they created. You may well not be one of those, but that comment throws you in the “guilty by association” boat.

Similar to the political follow-ups in this thread, all Dimo-Krats/Regressives aren’t really as dumb as their party’s positions make them look but it is hard to not think of them that way given the broader group’s agenda and platforms. Some of them aren’t really nutcases against this country when you break it down issue by issue with them in small conversation groups with them. Often just one specific, passionate cause, but they get painted in with the revolutionaries and the damage they are doing to our society.

The last guy lost to Vandy twice and to UCF before they were a P5 team and those losses didn’t come in his first season as a head coach. If you want to keep bringing up Vandy and Nichols, why don’t you mention those facts as well.

          Like

          • The last guy lost to Vandy twice in 15 years and both of those were unacceptable. The loss to Vandy this year when they amassed all of 171 yards of total offense was downright embarrassing. The Nicholls near-miss was almost the worst loss in the program’s history. Even the win against Nicholls was multiple times worse than a bowl loss to UCF (and that was unacceptable). That Nicholls team should have been beaten by 50 or more.

Sorry Debby but I DO fault CMR for what happened to Crowell. The charges were dropped. Crowell wasn’t convicted of anything. UGA is the only school in the SEC where Crowell would have been kicked off the team under those circumstances. At FU under Urban Crowell would have suited up for the next game. I said this too many times to count: “I want a football coach to head up the Georgia program. When I want a preacher I’ll go to church.”
