WTH did he write? Why is anyone paying him at all? There isn’t anything new here except some sort of anecdote about being in a hotel room in Nashville and watching the NFL Draft. Which apparently he did not because it would be like his job to cover SEC football news but just to see if Ole Miss made history.
At some time like 20-25 years ago, Barnhart probably had sources to either break a story like this or provide additional context and analysis. Now he is getting paid to “write” commentary that really just sounds like his side of a phone conversation with one his flunkies when he heard about the Ole Miss news. He probably hit record on his pocket tape recorder (digital is for suckers and millennials) and then gave the tape to an intern to transcribe into a blog post (Hey look at me – I’m Mr. College Football Blogger!) The intern had to google what the hell Barnhart gave him and how the hell to listen to it and then realize Barnhart wasn’t talking to anyone on a phone but just having a one-sided conversation with himself because his voice sounds so good and his wisdom and insight is so very sagacious.

It is his job but the blog post is terrible. He once used to be someone who could add substance to the conversation because he did actual work. He didn’t do any work here.
The only thing he added to news/info and analysis that other people are doing better is the Nashville anecdote where he revealed he was watching the NFL draft because he was stuck in a hotel room the day before he was meeting with the Vandy coach and he wanted to see if 3 guys from Ole Miss where drafted in the first round. He wasn’t watching it because it could have been part of his job or would become the basis for other stories/commentary in the SEC.
The best columnists still have sources because they draw on the those sources to provide insights and background to use in their analysis. He didn’t do any of that here. He told us .. this is bad for Ole Miss. Really? I could have figured that out and I am neither a college football writer, analyst, talk radio host or work in an athletic department. I also know that when you voluntarily give up $7.8 million, it ain’t good.
So apparently the only difference between TB and me is that he stayed in a Holiday Inn Express sometime last year in Nashville and he gets paid to write the obvious as an expert. God help us if he decides he doesn’t like this gig and wants to become a heart surgeon.

The sad thing is, I know that I probably have a more favorable opinion than I should because I liked him 20 years ago and he’s an alum. These days he offers nothing that some random dude at a Newman gas station would offer.

My hesitation in even considering endorseing this notion is my firm belief that the two biggest games we have are non-conference games: Notre Dame and yech. Would I take 2-0 in those and 6-2 in the conference even if it meant no trip to Atlanta? Absolutely. Without hesitation. An 8-0 conference record with a loss at South Bend and in Atlanta with be greatly disappointing IMHO.

When the news came down today, oh boy, my mind immediately went to April 28, 2016, a date that will live in infamy if you’re a Rebels fan or Japanese. I was sitting in a hotel room in Nashville watching the ceiling fan go round in circles because somebody told me I had a meeting with someone the next day. I turned on the NFL draft because I wanted to see if Ole Miss was going to make school history by having three players taken in the first round. I envisioned a photo from Chicago with Laremy Tunsil, Laquon Treadwell and Robert Nkemdiche holding up “No. 1” jerseys with coach Hugh If You Have Facts About a Violation email compliance@olemiss.edu Freeze. It would be recruiting gold for Ole Miss.
Instead it turned out to be Acapulco Gold.
