Pissing down my leg

Sorry to harp, but I’m simply astounded at some of the responses I received last night to my previous post.  I don’t know if that’s because some of you recently emerged from a time capsule unaware of how Georgia athletics have been managed for the past two decades, or if you’re in the camp of those who think football recruiting is the only thing that should matter to a Georgia fan.

Then again, maybe I did a poor job of expressing myself.  So let me take a moment to backtrack and outsource a comment from Jon Solomon that succinctly expresses how absurd McGarity’s position on the reserve funds is.

Take a deep breath and ponder that statement for a minute.  Can you think of another P5 athletic director who could come up with an explanation like that (presumably with a straight face)?

The Georgia athletic department has money socked away because an athletic director is worried about something that may never happen.  And even if it were ever to occur, how does he have any clue whether what he’s salted away would be adequate?  On the flip side, say the NCAA eventually prevails in court or obtains an antitrust exemption down the road — does anyone believe McGarity would release those funds for some purpose that would serve the fan base?  Of course he wouldn’t; he’d simply move on to another hypothetical concern. (I hear zombie apocalypse stories are all the rage now, Greg.)

This isn’t about prioritizing recruiting needs.  As I keep saying, there is more than enough money rolling through Butts-Mehre to solve more than one problem at a time.  And it’s a joke to praise a man who spent forty thousand dollars on a search firm to justify a hiring decision he’d already made for exercising fiscal prudence, not to mention tearing down an inadequate indoor facility that never should have seen the light of day in order to make room for the new IPF.

It’s about benign neglect.  Greg McGarity honestly believes he made a good faith effort to address game day concerns by installing big fans and credit card machines at Sanford Stadium.  Just like he never really thought much of the need for a true indoor practice facility, despite Richt asking for one for years.  It took an assistant coach publicly embarrassing him to make McGarity see the light, but we fans should just keep quiet about the inadequacies we face going to games while the athletic department shells out $100 million for capital projects?  Screw that.

If you want to talk about preparing for future events that might impact the bottom line, how about some forward thinking about keeping the fan base happy and desirous of attending games in person?  Better wi-fi ain’t gonna cut that.

The Georgia Way isn’t about forward thinking.  And I know that nothing I post will change that.  But to follow through on the header to this post, don’t look at me and tell me it’s raining.  I know urine when I see it.

  2. Well stated, Senator. As a paying fan and alum, I want to see an excellent product on the field and an excellent fan experience. I imagine a lot of the people who say that recruiting is the only thing that matters either 1) didn’t live through the Ray Goff experiment or 2) experience Georgia football from section HD most of the time.

I believe that the fan polls in the past have born this out. Most of the commenters on here haven’t been to a single game much less every home game in a season in quite some time. The stadium is low priority because it doesn’t impact them.

I’d say the fact that many of us don’t go to every single game religiously as we once did might also reflect on our experience with the stadium’s condition.

It’s not the driving force for why I go to fewer games, but I notice it and it certainly rankles me when I do go.

You know when a Tech fan relative can legitimately criticize the bathroom situation at Sanford Stadium that something is really wrong. Having to step over water (liquid) pouring out of restroom areas and the AD needing to have it pointed out is not excusable. He needs to “retire” yesterday.

How does one go about getting on the athletic board? What would it take for us to get the senator appointed to shake things up a bit. We all know McGarity is a puppet anyway. We need to make change occur with the guys pulling the strings.

Of course the flip side is that donors and season ticket holders have no one to blame but themselves. They keep blindly handing money to B-M even with the village idiot Mcgarity running the show. If people were truly pissed off about the facilities and state of the UGA reserve fund they’d simple stoping giving them money.

You realize a protest by withholding means starting all over right? The years of accumulating donations means walking away and starting that over or giving donations commiserate with what you e been building over years, just to get back to where you atarted? That’s like instantly rewarding Butts Mehre with a one time mega donation. I’m going to hold on to my tickets and right to bitch about it as opposed to just walking away and have some other William g donor take my spot. Yeah, they’ve got us by the balls, but it is what it is.

Where is complaining getting anyone? Yes giving up your tickets results in a generation to get back to where you were if you’re lucky and pay for your disobedience.

UGA has a problem with the wealthiest of donors being content with the Georgia way. Auburn, Florida, Bama etc are not the same. I don’t know how a regular fan changes this, it will most likely take a generation change.

Correct me if I am wrong, but you still keep your points even if you stop temporarily. The only thing you would lose is your current seat location. And depending on what your cumulative points are, that might not even hurt you much when you restart.
We have been donating annually for 16 years, so I could probably skip a a few years and still get very similar or better tickets in Section 336 when I started back up.

That’s not my understanding. You have to donate every year. Now.. conceivably, you could not purchase seats, and keep your points and get back in the next year… but I think you lose if you don’t make the donation.

I’d add, that what really irks me, is it’s all being done in the face of increases across the board in ticket prices and donation levels. It’s just insulting. I don’t have a problem priortizing.. I don’t have a problem with doing the west end zone first…. but the response from McGarity on this is insulting in its tone-deafness.

Think you’ve nailed it, Senator. Successful leaders of successful organizations tend to be people with vision and a clear sense of priorities. I haven’t seen much of that in the AD. It looks very much like his priority is to maintain the status quo and finish each year with the budget in the black. I can’t think of a single thing he’s done that’s proactive unless he’s been pushed.

I have been pretty much unimpressed with McGarity since day one. One of the things that I have the biggest problem with is how the reserve fund has been (mis)managed. I obviously felt as if the IPF was a necessity that should have been addressed some 5-7 years ago. There really is no excuse why a school with all the resources UGA has was basically choosing to put itself at a disadvantage. Makes no sense. I don’t feel like it is appropriate to brag about how much money is in the reserve when there are glaring needs at UGA need to be addressed. Primarily the annual GEEF – they raise all this money every year (through donations) then brag about how much they were able to “save” and put into the reserves. I’m all for fiscal responsibility, especially looking around and seeing how many athletic departments are in trouble these days. However, I feel that the pendulum swings both ways and that the Athletic Association should be more obligated to put the money to work. Though I am fine with the descision to move on from Richt and get Smart, I must also say I never felt like McGarity gave Richt the tools and support he needed to be successful. I often wonder how things could have worked out differently in that situation, however it’s all water under the bridge now. Again, I’m all for fiscal responsibility, but when UGA constantly has their hand out I just feel like they should be required to put the money they raise to good use. I imagine that the majority of donors expect their donations to be used to get UGA to the elite status where it belongs, not to be hoarded away so we can brag about how much money we have.

Use to be that a coach got fired when fans stopped showing up at the stadium. Now, the fan isn’t noticed as much as the TV money is. In the eyes of the school, the “real” customer of UGA football is ESPN. If enough donors stop giving, enough tickets stop selling, then maybe something will happen.

Good post, Senator. I will admit that I don’t care about a lot of the things people seem to be bothered by at Sanford Stadium. The concession lines are too slow but it just doesn’t bother me that much. Post game traffic is awful and since I live in South GA it puts me getting home late. So we just make a weekend of it. But I’m with you on McGarity. At this point he almost seems to be openly hostile (almost because passive aggression is more his brand of beer) to everyone outside the Butts Mehre circle of trust or anyone who can’t write him a huge check. He’s been a disaster. And if Kirby doesn’t end up being what we all hope he will be he McG will go down in UGA history right next to names like Jan Kemp. As embarrassing as the Evans regime end was, McGarity almost makes Evans seem like our crazy cousin who while he might embarrass you, was a fun guy. That’s how much ill willl McGarity has engendered.

  17. SERIOUS improvements to an old Sanford Stadium should have begun years ago. Not to mention the fact that the facelift to Stegeman was nothing more than a facelift. That money should have been the start of a new sports arena somewhere on campus for basketball and gymnastics. Our reserve fund is indeed impressive, but it is holding us back big time. It is another one of those cases of ” too much of a good thing”.

    Liked by 1 person

gymnastics is the only sport that year-in year-out fills Stegeman up and typically the audience is 50% or more children. Which is to say, people that aren’t paying tens of thousands for the product.

If b-ball fans were clamoring for a new court complex, they’d be selling out the joint and paying big bucks to improve their seating. None of that is happening.

The fact is that Stegeman meets the demand of our fans in those sports and spending 75 million for a new one is not gonna happen until that changes.

      • Don’t forget: it’s all about recruiting. Even in basketball. Facilities, facilities, facilities. “if you build it, they will come”. The new age thinking seems to be that you can’t be good unless you look good. Sometimes the cart gets in front of the horse.

One of the problems with building a new Stegman is the other demands for uses of that sort of facility that don’t exist in Athens.

Look at Colonial Life in Columbia, which I imagine has had a lot to do with the Gamecocks’ boost up the BB rankings. It is essentially a pro arena – luxury boxes etc. Colonial Life is regularly used for big concerts, monster truck rallies, the circus, the whole nine yards – things you see the Gwinnett Arena or the Classic Center (concerts) used for.

Further, we don’t have the corporate presence in Athens to sustain luxury boxes for basketball games, or else they would’ve already repurposed some of the upper level seating around the TV cameras as such.

I feel like I write this post every week. New arenas don’t actually have much correlation to great basketball programs. Ole Miss has a new arena and is actually ranked behind us in basketball recruiting. Georgia Tech rebuilt Alexander in 2012 and has been to zero NCAA tournaments since then and fired their coach. Auburn built an arena in 2011 and still has not been to the NCAA tournament since. Their new recruiting momentum is because of Pearl (if you know what I mean). Bama plays in a glorified airplane hanger and now has a top 10 class because they have a former NBA coach. UNC plays in a dated and dark arena (I’ve been to many times) while Duke plays in a nice, but tiny gym with padded benches for lower bowl seats (I’ve also been to several times) that didn’t have air conditioning until 2002. Stegeman is fine. It needs to be full and that’s on the product being put on the court and fans getting interested in it.

          • Comparing the blues of basketball to Georgia hoops isn’t relevant. Cameron is the Fenway, Wrigley, or Lambeau of basketball. The Smith Center is a great facility, but many Carolina fans still wished they played at Carmichael. I get your point, but the legacy of the Coliseum is basketball arena / cow barn.

Like most governmental agencies it is a lot sexier to build a brand new administrative office building than it is to replace crumbling infrastructure.

It didn’t help when tv revenue surpassed ticket sales.

Re open North Campus tailgating and spend the few thousand dollars for six days a year to help with the clean up would be a good start.

Spend a million to study a complete redesign of all bathrooms, public areas and concession areas would be another good start.

If the stadium sound system still sounds like my blown JBLs from 1977 as it did when I gave up my tickets in 2010 come this fall then pitch forks might be in order.

2017 renewable season tickets applications for all Hartman Fund contributors are now posted on georgiadogs.com.

You now have 28 days to submit your ticket payment or we will revoke your ticket purchasing privileges.

We are introducing a new feature to this year’s application form. For the many of you who do not have enough contribution points to qualify for actual tickets, we can automatically and immediately roll your ticket payments into your 2018 Hartman Fund donation.

What an easy and convenient way to build up points for future ticket purchasing opportunities!

Welcome to reality. For most of the 90’s, some friends and I had season tickets. Adams ruined tailgating, game times became unpredictable, the team was mediocre, and the drive was a hassle. So we quit going. Although we look back fondly on those days (mostly the tailgating), no one has ever expressed any regret about discontinuing the trip. I’ve followed the Dawgs up close and from a distance. I still love UGA, the Dawgs and cfb. But as a time and money investment it has a lot of problems. And those problems are exacerbated by people like McG and Adams, who only care about our money and don’t give a flying fuck about Dawg fans.

My last game, while living and working in Atlanta, with a 11am kickoff, the day was so miserable I never felt motivated to go back. The traffic, the parking, the 2-3 mile walk, getting up at 5 am!!! Eating a stale $5 CFA sandwich at the game….not a lot of motivation to go back.

I came across two UGA news items this morning. One, a story of $77mm in reserve funds. The other, a fundraising plea from a neighbor and fan of the UGA Hockey team. After having a great season and, you know, actually winning the SEC in something, they need $20k to fund the team’s trip to the national tournament. I find it insane, but not surprising, that the athletic department is not picking up the tab for the trip. In addition to being a great and low cost way to support successful UGA student athletes (i.e., promote athletic excellence; something in short supply these days), it would probably also be well worth the good PR (assuming the athletic department could envision and execute a successful roll out of the news; a picture of McG with a bunch of happy UGA athletes and a Friday feel good story might do a body good).

They are an awesome story but they are also a club team, which like all club teams, is not affiliated with the Athletic Association. If they get funded for this, then the club rugby, ultimate, lacrosse, soccer, baseball, etc. teams all will want funding and have a good argument now. Several of those club teams are also nationally competitive and play for national titles. I’d be fine with the AA funding those trips for all those teams or at least writing a check to UGA Club Sports for a fund that helps all club teams with more much needed funding. I’m just pointing out that it will need to be all or nothing, so it’s more than just club hockey.

    Senator,
It is even worse than what is reported by the press – if you can believe that. My financial adviser is a Bulldog alum and with a national top 5 financial firm. In addition to that he is a Big-Time booster of one of the major men’s teams at UGA.

He told me years ago that he made a sales call on the UGA Foundation and wanted to look at their “investments” and offer up better options and return on investment for their portfolio. He was told “we don’t need to invest our money in any fancy investments. We have an account down at the Athens Federal Savings and Loan with Bill and Nancy and that is all we need.” Now that may have been with the reserve fund was a fraction of what it is now, but that is yet another example of the mindset and the Georgia way.

Personally I cut back on my donation and will maybe only buy 2 tickets instead of 4 and I may sell those. I’ve been going to Athens for games since 1979 and I am just worn down from how fans are treated.

Senator, maybe you could poll your readers to build support for your case. Right now, Greg McGarity won’t do anything if he thinks you are voicing one lone opinion. On the other hand, if 99% of fans agree with you in a poll, I think that will get his attention and maybe even get some action.

Greg McG is an utter failure, basketball and football have won no conference or national championships under his “leadership”.

I think they regularly poll a portion of the donors about improvements to prioritize and you’d have to think Greg does use that info in his own survival and self interest.

Greg M’s survival if tied to Kirby Smart’s success, he knows that, that’s why he’s throwing his money there, because if Kirby fails, his career is over. And if the first year under Smart is any indication, and by Greg M’s recent football expenditures, Greg M is not feeling confident about his own future.

A lot of people will be watching the games from home with a lot of empty seats if we get another 7-5 season, and that hits the regime where it counts.

Don’ know if ADGM reads this blog (although he certainly should) but clearly he reads the AJC. If you want to get his attention a better strategy might be to continue to complain about things to the paper. If they keep covering the fan experience on a regular basis and highlighting the unhappiness, maybe something happens that’s good for us.

When we have enough accumulated (approximately $30-40 million), we’ll start to study what it would take to improve some of these areas that people claim are problems. We need to stay cutting edge and this is a great way to do that.

Some of you guys baffle me… generally a big fan of the Senator but he and I don’t see eye to eye on this one. I don’t go to Sanford to see a circus or be entertained in any other way than to watch a football game. I want to see a good… no… a great football team beat Alabama, or Tennessee or whomever may be there that day. All too often lately that wasn’t happening. I am glad there are now CC machines at the concessions because I am the guy that usually forgot to grab cash so my mouth is pretty dry toward the second half since I refuse to pay the idiot fine at the stadium ATM machines. At the stadium where I sit in 123, I’ve never had a problem getting to the restroom. Never had a problem getting to the coke stand. My seats are pretty good. And I usually get what I came for, save the embarrassments at the hands of Alabama and UT. If the $63M gets me a bigger better jumbotron and audio system, and a cool place to entertain and hopefully secure better recruits then I’m all for it. Because better recruits and better coaching will end the Bama drought, the SEC Championship drought, and the National Championship drought… not a more cozy west end zone complex. Frankly I’d piss in a tin can if I could call my team the defending national champions right now. And lastly… I will never… NEVER berate my school or my team here in public. Concerns, and I’ve had a few will be taken directly to the appropriate admin at the school. Till then… Go Dawgs!!!

And fir every one of you guys threatening to give up your tickets there’s 4 behind you wanting them including me. I’ve got 4, had them for 30 years and I’ll take 4 more if i can get them.

The administration hasn’t given me anything, they put a product out there that I’m willing to buy. Simple really.

You don’t seem to understand that both the on-the-field product and the game day experience have gotten worse. For those of us who are paying the freight, a simple recognition of the fact that the game day / stadium experience isn’t what it once was and that the university is serious about fixing it beyond big ass fans, upgraded wifi, and ridiculously loud music would be appreciated. I’m hearing the crickets chirping right now.

North of $2,000 per year plus expenses is a hell of a lot of money to spend for 6 or 7 Saturdays of entertainment. I don’t expect Sanford to become Jerry World or August National, but I do expect to be treated like a brand-loyal customer whose experience is worth the money I shelled out.

eethomaswfnc, I don’t seem to misunderstand anything. I’m just not a spoiled whiny fan. I get that some folks want more amenities at the stadium… fair enough. Do you want the water slide and swimming pool like some stadiums have or just better bathrooms? Thing is, MY gameday experience isn’t bad… at all. I enjoy the hell out of every trip in Sanford Stadium. I grew up dreaming about when I could go with my father. Finally when I was able to it was everything I’d dreamed of and yes we’ve had the same seats since well before I was born in section 123.

Senator, I have no problem with complaints and as I’ve said I’ve had a couple I’ve expressed over the years. But I can tell you being in management of a large public company I take the complaints that come to my desk on letterhead with a real name–unlike fake online names so no one knows who you really are– more seriously. I personally think we do the program we claim to love more harm than good with a constant beat of the war-drum because we aren’t getting what we want whether that’s in the stadium or otherwise. I can tell you that I live in another rivals backyard–literally… my address has another schools name in it. I’m great friends with a lot of those guys and if I’ve heard once I’ve heard a thousand times “man you UGA guys just can’t be happy with anything can you”. And that seems to be becoming our reputation which you cannot tell me doesn’t get heard at the recruit level. More specifically their parents. I would certainly like the tickets to be less expensive, I’d like to see tickets available on gameday for $25 so a dad could bring his son without getting a mortgage but its a runaway train at this point and we all know it’ll never happen. Clemson just built a $142 million complex complete with indoor mini-golf for their players, their fans aren’t bitching about their gameday experience… they’re saying man look what we’ll do to attract even better players and continue to compete with Alabama.

I’m generally with you Senator when you complain about the state of college athletics in general in terms of the money train that it has become and I wish it were different. But it isn’t, and it isn’t going to get any better. So we as fans have to decide if we want to compete with Clemson and Alabama or not and to do that is going to require even larger sums of money invested in the program because the arms race has really just begun. I enjoy the debate. Keep up the good work.

My support of UGA athletics is a choice, not an obligation. The UGA athletic department owes me some degree of loyalty and appreciation, too.

I don’t get why some of you reduce the situation to a binary choice of improvements for recruiting or improvements for fan satisfaction. I really don’t get why some of you think it’s fine to turn the relationship between the school and the fan base on its head. (I guarantee you it doesn’t work that way in the luxury boxes.) But it sure makes it easier to understand McGarity’s mindset.

I don’t give BM a free pass, but at the end of the day i think what we all want more than tiled bathrooms is victories. Championships. And i think by being this way we put our chances further from the goal not closer to. That’s all.

            • Hal, I want better restroom facilities that have the appearance of being sanitary for the full 4.5 hour period they are in use. I want concession service that enables me to buy what I want and get back to my seat as quickly as possible. I want to feel like my daughters can go to the restroom and buy a drink without missing a significant portion of the game. I want an experience that reflects that of a customer whose commitment to purchase the product is appreciated.

Is that too much to ask while we’re spending $63,000,000?

You state that you’re an executive of a public company. Would you treat your customer to a product and experience that makes them consider whether they would do something else with the money they have budgeted for your company’s product or service? I doubt it … that’s the root of all of the complaints about the fan experience. You wouldn’t tolerate poor service and nasty bathrooms at your local McDonald’s. Why would you tolerate it in Sanford?

I am even less consequential than that. Not that I mind. The current issue we’re debating here, like most of the world’s problems, can be explained through the golden rule and the metaphor of the shit sandwich.

The one with the gold makes the rules.

Life’s a shit sandwich. The more bread you got the less shit you have to eat.

That being said I have no problem with anybody trying to tip those stubborn scales by whatever means they have at their disposal, including via a blog. What I do mind are those who insist upon blind loyalty.

I believe in this motto: Afflict the comfortable. Comfort the afflicted.

I have zero tolerance for those who are so enamored with the comfortable, the privileged and the elite they question anybody and everybody who challenges them.

But since we are in the middle of not winning as much as we like, it sure would be a little less hassle to make some more than half hearted attempts to deal with the above issues considering we have more than enough funds to deal with it.

Could someone please explain what the balance of the reserve fund should be? Do we want deficit spending, or should we have a balanced budget with a reserve. I don’t know enough about the legalities of UGA’s sports organization in order to fully understand if there is a kosher reason/reasons that would merit the need for a reserve fund the size that is currently banked.

Easy solution to the home game experience is to mimick what I have done.
1)Move to Athens, GA and buy or rent a house walkable to the stadium
    2) Tailgate at home with family and friends, as you can’t reliably do this on campus anymore. Also “tailgating” is no longer needed when most games start at noon, just wake up eat breakfast and walk to the stadium
3)Walk to the stadium, be sure to hydrate agressively on the walk in
4)Get to the stadium at least 30 minutes early, use the restrooms before going to your seats (i.e before they become a public health hazzard)
5)Get to your seats and dont move the entire game, so what if it is 100+ degrees, you should of hydrated before on the walk in. Dont even think about being able to get a water as there are no water stations, and the concession lines are at least 30 minute wait. Dont think of using the restrooms. Litterally sit in your seat and dont move for the 4 hours it takes to play the game. Controversial play happens, dont expect to see a replay on the scoreboard as they will show an angle filmed from outerspace. Want to hear the redcoat band, too bad if you are in the north upper deck,
    6) After the game walk home.

I have the most tolerable situation compared to the majority of fans, and I have second thoughts of renewing my contribution this year. The solution is either put a product on the field that is top notch, or at least give us basic dignities of access to water and clean restrooms.

You can easily get a water from one of the vendors walking up and down the aisle without waiting in line. My bathrooms in section 110 are a breeze to get through although I know the same can’t be said for other sections. If I rush during a commercial break I usually don’t miss much and of course there’s always halftime.
I see a lot of people complaining and I know they have good reason but I think it also gets a little overblown at times. My big question is why bother with concessions? Tailgating is there so we can load up on food before we get to the stadium. Certainly concessions should be improved if you’re the AA. Standing in line for a water while some old lady fumbles with the right change shouldn’t be acceptable. As individuals though, there are ways around some of these issues.

I assure you I have not seen a vendor over the last few years in section 307. Especially during the first very hot few games of the season. We are directly in the sun. The one time I broke down to get a water at the concessions they had run out at halftime.

“My big question is why bother with concessions? Tailgating is there so we can load up on food before we get to the stadium.”

That was my point. I dont bother with concessions, but I am very fortunate to not have too. My situation is ideal and is still not desireable. I cant imagine how some other people deal with it. When I am there I dont want to miss any action, I want to be immersed in the game. If I dont prepare properly and break down to get a water or use the restrooms, I gurantee myself of missing atleast 1-2 possesions. That is unacceptable from my standpoint. I go because I love the atmosphere and love watching Georgia football. However as I get older (I am 34 now) and have a family these things will not be possible.

The frustrating thing to me is that BM is focused on the hard things and ignoring the easy things. Winning championships is difficult. You need talented players, talented coaches, and a fair amount of luck. And that’s what they’re going after.

Fixing bathrooms, concessions, and traffic is easy. If UGA loses every game for the next three years, fans can at least have a more pleasant experience at the game. But they’re not worried about that.

I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that BM has adopted the ESPN view that a football stadium is now nothing more than a television studio. A live studio audience might be nice, but it’s not necessary.

The 6-month contingency messaging is dumb. First of all it is on the high end of what an entrepreneur/owner would want to keep on hand vs. re-invest into their business. Second, there are not nearly the same level of risks and threats in running a 125+ year old university athletic program as there would be in a more competitive, dynamic industry. Third, if anything, the “never push the envelope” contingency fund will just turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy. Neglecting investments into current customer satisfaction/experience/loyalty, attracting new customers, infrastructure, AND quality of product will create the very emergency ADGM worries about. Only then it will be too late, and even $34M will be woefully insufficient. The Senator’s comments are spot on about needing to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time, as are other’s about the lack of vision, awareness, strategy, or proactive behavior of ADGM and The Georgia Way™.

what i find funny about the excuse of playing players is that it is a rationale that is totally ignorant to the context of the situation. unless every other team also has a $32m reserve for this purpose, the remedy will have to be scaled to what the vast majority of schools can do. not to say that the payments required will be light, but they will have to be orchestrated and administrated in an environment that does not assume the existence of a huge amount of savings. the reserve isn’t strategic at all.

so, with that in mind, what on earth is really going on here? i’d ask any of you willing to try to channel your inner McGarity and tell me what the real reason is for withholding. do y’all think the fund exists for itself or is there something else possibly at play?

I don’t think the pursuit of fiscal responsibility should be criticized, and quite frankly, building a solid balance sheet to handle unforeseen circumstances is what prudent managers do. I that respect, AD GM has done the right thing.

That said, he is an abject failure at virtually everything else. He has no vision, no strategic goals, no process or framework for how UGA could maximize its potential across as many sports as possible. Other than hype videos, there is nothing we do that looks like we are leaders or maximizing our potential as an athletic department.

That said, I know most of the readers of this blog will disagree, but Mcgarity does deserve some credit for his willingness to end the Richt era. I don’t want to debate Kirby, as most in this community seem to have made up their minds one way or the other. I am ecstatic that he is our coach. I recognize that McGarity did not make the decision on his own and have heard and read all of the accounts about “starving Richt of resources” (and still believe it was time to move on.)

I just wish someone would see fit to conclude it is time to end McGarity’s tenure and get an AD with some vision.

    Like

    • I’m sure if he doesn’t win a championship in the next 2 years, you’ll be begging whoever (Morehead, McGarity or someone else) to end the Kirby era as well. Ecstatic is not a word I would use to describe my reaction to his first 365 days as the leader of the program. Other than recruiting, I haven’t seen anything that’s better than it has been the last 2 years. For the facilities support, I give McGarity zero credit because the only reason he did it is that he knows his neck is in the noose if this doesn’t work out.

On fiscal responsibility, having a solid balance sheet is one thing. Having a ridiculous amount in reserves when you have a product where the revenue is a known commodity is something else. There was NO reason other than opportunity to raise the minimum contribution levels by double digits and the ticket prices other than to put those amounts in the reserve fund. It was pure greed on the part of the athletic board and nothing more.

I’ll also say I hope like crazy that this works out regardless of the impact on the AD because I want Georgia athletics to win.

      • I have a longer term view than 14 months, and the reason I am ecstatic is that we have a coach who is absolutely obsessed with winning/excellance, which is in many senses the whole theme of this post. While there are many personality types that have succeeded in coaching, we have never really had a coach in Athens (maybe Donnan) who seemingly wanted to win as much as us fans. Time may prove me wrong, but attention to detail, accountability to a standard, and a maniacal focus on getting the best players is a pretty good place to start.

As for the budget, I don’t disagree that his sense of “risk” is off, but I guess I should have phrased things differently. Having money is not a bad thing. Wasting it is. I am generally of the belief that “money does not buy quality” in coaching. Quality often emerges from “poor smart and determined” or from guys who have a proven track record (see Pittman). Overpaying for mediocre is stupid. If I were Magic Mc, I would offer the entire coaching staff the opportunity to cut back on their salaries by 25-50%, but offer them performance bonuses that were multiples of their salary for winning the SEC, playing in the playoff, and winning the playoff. rather than annuitize the higher compensation, the coaching staff is ALWAYS eating what they kill. Again, takes vision and guts, which are two things Magic Mc lacks in spades.
