The numbers on Tennessee’s new AD’s deal are kind of eye popping.
Currie’s deal with Tennessee is for five years through June 30, 2022, and is worth $900,000 per year. His base pay will increase by $25,000 on July 1 of every year. He’s also due a “signing incentive” of $75,000 within 30 days.
If Currie remains Tennessee’s athletics director by the end of his original contract date, he will receive a $1.5 million retention bonus.
Tennessee is responsible for Currie’s $175,000 buyout with Kansas State…
Currie’s deal also includes incentives ranging from $90,000 to $150,000 for high graduation rates and top-40 finishes in the Directors’ Cup standings, making $300,000 the max bonus he can receive in a single year.
All this to resuscitate an athletics department that was tied for 113th in the fall Directors’ Cup standings.
Does somebody want to make a “Greg McGarity is underpaid” argument?

Which may be more an outcry of the Old Guard about Phat Phil not being selected than a protest against Currie. It would have been ludicrous to hire Fulmer but it does match the mentality of many Vol fans. Based on the performance of recent ADs in Knoxville, this hire will probably be an upgrade. The TN fans should be more concerned about the retention of Sgt. Carter than the new AD, although the salary and benefits should be a concern given their financial situation.

The new guy at AD usually doesn’t bring in his guy at HC until after his first full year. Expect Bootch to go 6-6 / 7-5 and get the ax.

If Bootch continues to hang in that 3rd/4th position in the East, I am all for him to continue as HC. I really think some of their fans are realizing they have been sold a load of manure with him but they are afraid to roll the dice again as their stock continues to fall. TN is far removed from their glory years (next year will be 20 without an SEC title), and they still have a small recruiting base near them, except for Georgia. And they aren’t exactly rolling in money either, would love for us to put the knife in and finish them off. A few more years of Jones’ ineptness couldn’t hurt.

My understanding is that it’s one of those lesser known competitions in the shadow of the Reserve Fund Order of Merit. Kind of like each individual sports’ national and conference championships. We’ll continue to be fiscally responsible and not pay much attention to anything but the Order of Merit (by far the most prestigious and comprehensive of any of the athletic department measurements).

The new AD is a friend of my wife’s family. I have met him a few times and very nice guy. Comes across as real straight shooter. Will be interesting to see how he meshes with the folks in Knoxville. He has the potential to do big things there. Socks for us if he does,

I have no idea what one expects from an AD except to hire good coaches and maintain facilities, etc. Not sure what makes Currie so valuable – is Kansas State all that admired as an athletic program?
In our case, we hired ADGM because he was a Georgia guy and because we hoped some of Foley’s skill/luck would have rubbed off on him during his time at UF. It was a reasonable shot at the time. But there’s been lots of evidence since that we didn’t get what we were hoping for, so no, he’s not underpaid.

GM is not underpaid–in fact he is overpaid, whatever he makes. UT is doing it right. First, you get a quality AD. Then you turn over running the program to him. I don’t know where UGA is in the Director’s cup standings but I would bet pretty damn low too. Georgia used to be one of the contenders every year back when VD was AD.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Everyone on here bitches about McGarity for the wrong reasons. Despite popular opinion, he is doing an excellent job with the finances. He is a Public Relations disaster, but I can put up with that. Under Dooley and Evans we were consistently a top 15, and usually top 10, finisher in the Directors Cup. Swimming and Diving, Golf, and Tennis will move us up in the rankings but probably no higher that 45-50. We are also on a consistently downward trajectory. We have and spend so much more money than almost all of the schools above us. We should not be behind a bunch of FCS and non-Football D1 schools.

Please explain how Currie is a good AD. He has made no hires in football as he inherited Bill Snyder and it would be easier to fire Saban than Snyder (IMHO, Snyder is the GOAT. Neither Saban or Bryant could average 10 wins a year at K-State). He has made one basketball hire when Frank Martin left for the South Carolina job. He tried to hire Mark Fox away from us but was rebuffed. He ended up hiring Bruce Weber who had just been fired from Illinois and has finished in the bottom half of the Big XII the past three years.
Currie is known for raising funds and managing the finances well. I.e. the same shit y’all hate McGarity for.

Currie is a good ol’ boy Mike Hamilton underling who was involved in the firing of Philip Fulmer.
So they can forget about Fulmer returning to the Vols.
Currie doesn’t look like a game-changer at UT. Just a safe insider hire to keep the Haslams’, the Mannings’ and the rest of the donors’ money flowing.
