Seriously, watching Georgia and Texas over the next few years is going to make for an interesting controlled experiment. How much of a difference does opening the checkbook — really opening the checkbook — make in this day and age? And how much bang for the buck does what an athletic department spends the money on get you?

that’s really the question no matter how much, or how little, you have, isn’t it? 36 years ago, it was “Do I buy the good stuff, and get a fifth, or do I buy the Old Mr. Boston stuff, and get a gallon?” Lots of complex metrics involved, not the least of which is “How much of this will be consumed by people not named me?” The whole quality/quantity thing is really a conundrum, when you delve into it.
Of course, you UVA guys probably were deciding between Johnnie Walker Red, or Johnnie Walker Black. Do I drive the BMW, or should I go with the Mercedes? It’s always something.

🙂 Dilemmas are dilemmas, always decisions and choices to be made. The haves and have nots have more in common than either think. UGA isn’t pitiful but we will not win an arms skirmish with the Texas boosters. As the Senator says, the amount of money is important but it isn’t always the deciding factor. Mr. February had the most money available, and several first picks on talent, but flopped anyway.

I think he won the conference once (perhaps twice), in that conference, with the edge he had, I feel he underachieved what an average coach would have done. We all have different opinions.

FWIW – He was in the same division as some guy named Bob Stoops.
It’s probably fair to argue that the game passed him by and that he lost some games against Oklahoma early in his tenure that he probably shouldn’t have. I’d argue that maybe one or two of those early losses were with superior teams, but he pretty much evened up the series starting in 2005 across the rest of his tenure. On the whole he accomplished more at Texas than anybody else had in 40 years.

I like Mac Brown as a person but given the talent and resources he had at his disposal gave him a huge edge on Stoops. Many of Texas’s classes were set by December, most of Stoops’ teams were filled by Texas HS athletes Brown had passed over. No excuse to get blistered by OU. And that wasn’t the only problem, they didn’t even get bowl eligible playing in the Big 12. Just cannot give him a pass fpor what he squandered at Texas.

I have to feel like UGA is closer to an SEC Title than Texas is to a Big 12 title.

In fairness – Georgia at least has the possibility of avoiding both LSU AND Alabama depending on the schedule rotation and how tie-breakers in the West shake out.
Texas would always end up having to play one of the two best teams in their conference twice because of the round robin and the non-sense that is going to be their conference championship game tie-in.

that’s what UGA did in about 2003, right? I have one of those auctioned off lockers in my house. It’s awesome. They sold over 100 of those things, I know they got 400 bucks minimum for them, a lot more for some of the famous players’ lockers. So, figure they made 50 grand, maybe more, just by letting people drive up on a Saturday and haul them away.
I realize the cash probably just went to buy Mike Adams a couple more dinosaur eggs, or whatever Versailles like baubles he wanted at the Palace of Light, but it seems worth it to sell them instead of just scrapping them.

Since it really is all about me, I’d say the controlled experiment is whether I was right that we should have hired Texas’ current coach in the fall of 2015.
Believe me when I say I desperately want to be proved completely and utterly wrong.

I honestly think he would have been a better hire at the time simply from the fact that he at least had experience as a head coach, albeit minimal, to avoid some of the on-the-job training growing pains shit we saw Kirby go through last year. It’s impossible to say at this moment who will be the better head coach over the long run, but it’s undeniable that Herman was more experienced when the job came open.
That said – Kirby being an alum might be the only reason that there’s been even a minimal turning of the Georgia Way ship when it comes to football support. I don’t know that Herman would have been afforded that goodwill even during his honeymoon period to make certain demands.

How green do you have to be to insist on that kind of building material? In 40 years, when millennials are running everything (i’d say 15 years, but they probably wont move out of mom’s basement until she dies), what kind of fanciful limitations on practical stuff will we see?
Maybe the kids in Generation Z will just take over. I hope they have some common sense, which appears to be in short supply among millennials.
