The SEC’s newest tradition

I’ve been waiting for this shoe to drop for a couple of years now.

Remember, it’s not your garden variety corporate naming.  It’s part of a “comprehensive partnership” in the SEC, where, after all, it just means more.

I suspect there are a lot more partners where that came from.

Advertising is more (financially) valuable than honoring someone’s memory. Plain and simple. The dominoes have been lined for a while, this is just the first to fall.

If I can find out which is the leading kim chi seller in the Atlanta area, I’ll tell you what the new name of Grant Field will likely be.

Shouldn’t #WeAreUK instead be #WeAreKroger ? Quite an ironic hashtag there considering you just sold your soul to some corporation.

I particularly like this quote: “The playing surface, which is named C.M. Newton Field in honor of the former Kentucky athletics director, will now be called C.M. Newton Grounds at Kroger Field.”

I see, so these days stadium names really are just semantics in nature, and I for one certainly could see TPTB at UGA utterly salivating over this new concept. “Sanford Grounds at Delta Airlines Field; hedges sponsored by Home Depot.” See? Nothing really has changed — Sanford is still in the name, so it’s all good!

As long as B-M continues to sell ego-enhancement salutations for their employees, it’s only a matter of time before they do the same for their facilities.

“It’s Saturday morning between the Synovus Investment Hedges on the University of Georgia Crown Distributing Field at the Sanford Beverage SuperStores Stadium”.

Getting chills of excitement just thinking about it…

Come watch your Bulldogs play at Goody’s Headache Powder stadium! Trust us, between the rushed drinking for the noon starts, and the results on the field, you’ll be thankful for packet of Goody’s that comes with each ticket.

C’mon guys, you’re too cynical. It’s not selling advertising. It’s a “Naming Opportunity.”

Went through Louisville KY a few weeks ago. Looks like the university named their arena (basketball) the KFC Center….or something to that effect. Looked odd, was not sure if was a shopping mall or their headquarters. Gotta be a Kentucky thing….

I wonder how much they got for the naming rights?

      • Honestly – that just seems incredibly light. I think the Braves deal for Suntrust Park is more than $10M annually. Seems like Kentucky just took whoever would pay them first.

At first i thought the same…until I realized this is Kentucky football we’re talking about. Regardless, 1.8 mil annually for a program that brings in 30+ mil alone in TV contract revenue seems desperate to me. Those folks must really need the money. Heck top shelf OC’s/DC’s alone demand salaries near that much.

yeah it seems a little light. Less than I thought it would be anyway. I would have thought that it would be in the $5million per year range if you asked me before. Still a nice bump to the bottom line.

I would have thought Kentucky football would have had to pay LOTS more than that to get a successful corporation to be associated with them.

I think the fans should work this to their advantage. Find some young law dog with a strong background in contract negotiations. Cut a deal with Kholer for renaming rights to those bathrooms. Enlarge them and upfit them. Add some of those heated seats for those cold Auburn games. Hook up with Chick-Fil-a for concessions. We could sell chicken barbecue during the Gamecock games. And finally Lazy Boy could redo those hard-ass benches that we sit on…. nice.

New Belgium Brewing Company, has donated $4.3 million to Colorado State and put its name and its product on the party deck of the north end zone of the $220 million stadium. This new bar area will be called the New Belgium Porch and is unique to college football stadiums.

I has a crayon could drive up sales.

  16. Couldn’t we just get one of the supermarket chains to endow the offensive coaching staff’s meals? That would be as valuable to the reserve fund as naming rights for a stadium.

    • The Huddle House Sanford Stadium may sound more footballish. Or better yet in honor of thepublic toilets at Sanford, how about Publix Sanford Stadium. Or in honor of the fans that pig out during tailgating, how about Piggly Wiggly Sanford Stadium.

Wouldn’t Kimberly Clark Depends Stadium be more appropriate for UGA? How many times did we crap the bed last year alone? Talk about your strategic partners. Think of the ingame potential if we ever stop anyone in the red zone again.

I bet Scrooge McDuck is about to wet himself at the thought of this kind of marketing synergy.

Not sure if it’s company policy, but I’ve always admired Kroger cause they seem to employ a lot of special needs people. I guess that’s why they were drawn to Kentucky.
