Misery is kind of miserable.

An old voice from the recent past:

“I think 15 years is a long time,” Richt said. “I think the expectations have been built to the point where if you don’t win a championship, it’s kind of miserable around here. When we don’t make it to Atlanta, I’m miserable, too.”

A current voice from the more distant past:

McGarity, who played and coached tennis at Georgia and worked in its athletic administration before leaving for Florida, said “there is nothing greater than being part of championships. That’s why we do what we do.

“At the end of the day,” he continued, “all the time you put in at the office, the fun comes when you’re competing for championships and you see what these coaches have done over a number of years to finally get to the top of the mountain and you’re able to be just a small piece of that.”

Another current voice from just the other day:

“What I can say to our fans is to first, look at our teams,” Morehead said. “I think with the exception of baseball, all of our spring programs are nationally ranked at this time, some as high as No. 3 or No. 4. If I remember the women’s tennis ranking. So overall, the state of our spring sports is that except for one sport in the top 25 in the country.

Georgia’s final Director’s Cup points and standings, 2015-6 edition:

  • Fall – 76
  • Winter – 407.50
  • Spring – 466
  • Total – 949.50 (15th)

Georgia’s current Director’s Cup points and standings, 2016-7 edition:

  • Fall – 101
  • Winter – 389
  • Spring – TBD
  • Total – 490 (22nd)

So much for looking at our teams, Jere.

I know this is a football blog and I’m wandering a bit from the main subject.  But after reading yet another infuriating article about an athletic department that, when it comes to management, apparently finds it impossible to walk and chew gum at the same time…

The NCAA tennis committee announced last week the sites for the next four championships and Athens wasn’t among them. Since it was already going to be held somewhere else next year (Wake Forest), that means we won’t see this storied event back here at least until 2023, and Georgia can’t be sure it will get it back then. It hopes to.

As one might imagine, for a school with a tradition-rich tennis history such as UGA’s is, this did not go over well.

“I was just sick to my stomach,” Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity said of getting the news the morning before it was announced. “I couldn’t eat I was so disappointed. It hurt me to call Manny and tell him. That was a phone call I was not looking forward to. It’s just part of the disappointment. It’s unfortunate but we respect those who have to make these tough decisions.”

… After Athens hosted the tournament in 20 of its first 23 years, the NCAA determined that it wanted to move it around geographically to different regions of the country. And that has been the case to the most extent. Since Georgia won its last national championship on its home courts in 2007, the tournament has been held in Tulsa, Okla. (twice); College Station, Texas; Palo Alto, Calif.; Champaign, Ill.; and Waco, Texas.

After this latest bid cycle, the new hosts are UCF (twice), Oklahoma State and Illinois.

Those places all have one thing in common. They’re all have new facilities, or at least relatively so.

The newest and most significant player is UCF. The host site its two years, starting in 2019, is the new USTA facility in Lake Nona, Fla. It’s a state-of-the-art place with 100 outdoor courts – and six indoors. It’s so nice that former UGA player John Roddick, who was head coach at Oklahoma, left there to take over at UCF.

Oklahoma State just built a new facility and Illinois did for when it last hosted in 2013. So clearly facilities are a part of this deal.

“We understand there are new players in the game every year that have made commitments to their tennis facilities and that’s what the NCAA is trying to encourage others to do, to invest in facilities like we have,” McGarity said. “Some schools have done that, not many, but some have. These are things that you learn going through the process.”

Actually, Georgia was all set to go forward with a project that would either add two new courts to the Lindsey Thompkins Indoor Courts or tear it down and build a new six-court facility either at the Dan Magill Complex or out on South Milledge Avenue at the soccer-softball complex. But McGarity put all that on hold shortly after coming on the scene as AD in 2010. And then it got de-prioritized again after Georgia moved to improve its football facilities with the construction of the $30 million indoor practice building and now the $63 million stadium project to build a new locker rooms and recruiting lounge into the west end grandstands.

“We’ve been so focused on so many other things,” McGarity said. “At some point finances come into play. We’ve had to kind of prioritize things. Whatever we do (with tennis) is going to have to be donor driven. A final location has not been determined at this time.”

… I have to ask:  is there anyone associated with the administration of Georgia athletics who is committed to excellence?  For all the recurring crap some here gave Mark Richt for not being appropriately fixated on the cause, in that regard, he ran rings around the guy who fired him.  All Greg McGarity appears to be good for is feeling bummed out when things don’t go his way and claiming the buck stops at his desk without being held accountable by the man he answers to. As I keep saying, it’s one helluva way to run a railroad.

I’ll make a rare, non-football related prediction here.  Scott Stricklin’s record as Georgia’s baseball coach can be charitably characterized as disappointing.  Once again, there will be no postseason for Georgia baseball.  To fire him will call for payment of something like a $1.2 million buyout, though.  Bottom line — pun fully intended — he’ll be back next season.  You tell me what kind of commitment is indicated by that.

I’m not really sure how much longer I can give a shit about Georgia football.  I’m really not.

Oh, and speaking of commitment to excellence, Manny Diaz deserves better.  I shudder to think whom McGarity brings in to replace him one day.

There is a reason I don’t want anything to do with the AA or BM Building. They are more concerned about doing the minimal to make money vs. investing and failing to realize if they did that, the teams and programs they invest in will make MORE money. McEars needs to go along with the Athletic board as they are ALL YES MEN.

      This!

What is so hard to understand that if fans saw a clear commitment to winning championships, they would be a whole lot more willing to pony up huge amounts of money than the cheap ass way we do things now?

Regarding Strickland (I will spell his name right once he starts winning games)…the fact that we would bring him back BECAUSE McCheapity signed him to a stupid 6 year deal out of the gates should be enough to fire both of them. But lest we forget, this is UGA we are talking about.

I am just so tired of waking up every day to see another piece of bad news about my favorite program.

        Ok. When does that happen?

It just seems there’s a lot of discontent and not a lot of success that the current AD can point to. I suppose that the decision makers may hitch CKS to him and hope that if football gets better than the complaints will go away. If football does not improve markedly then they can start over.

My supposition is that the prospects for football are high but not so much for everything else and therefore those two’s futures will be disconnected anyway, so why not go ahead and move on?

It seems the athletic department could use some of that “changey hopey thing” and quick.

So as long as the $ is there, no change? Greg is to UGA what Bill O was to Fox? As long as the money is coming in who cares how you behave? When the $ stops, that’s when your behavior is unacceptable?

I can see that. I also can see that if it’s just a $ issue, that it’s going to take a lot more than non-revenue sports sucking it up to effect the money stream. That pretty much means that as long as CKS is there so will Greg.

CKS was brought in against the AD’s wishes. There was a ground swell from former players (who have clout) and certain boosters to not lose him to SCar. Essentially McEar’s and AA was told -Give CKS what he needs or he goes to SCar and beats you every year because they are prepared to give him what he needs at SCar.

I remember my RA persuading me to skip class my Freshman year to go watch the NCAA tennis championships and it was one of the greatest sports times I had at UGA. We won our first team national championship with Mikael Pernfors and I’ll never forget all the fans barking in the stands during the matches. I was a regular at the event all 4 years in college, truly one of the hidden gems.

Very sad and yet one more example of all that’s wrong with the UGAA – lack of leadership, pure managerial incompetence, living on past success, rampant cronyism, no concern for the fans, no vision or strategy for the future, no real commitment to winning titles, inability to multi-task when it comes to facilities, solely focused on winning the reserve fund game and taking home big paychecks.

This line sums it up best…”Kind of ironic though isn’t it, that all those people donating all that money to be in the “Magill Society,” named for legendary tennis coach, and none of it is going toward tennis?”. Maybe “Luke Guest” can comeback here to explain why we’re all a bunch of whining fools for believing any of this.

“Whatever we do ( with tennis) is going to have to be donor driven”. as a three sport donor I have been on the fence until today. That is for me the last straw with the entire BM team. No more basketball, gymnastics contributions contributions from me. As for football I hope I’m wrong about our current OC and the 2017 offense is unlike last year. Where people sitting around me where correctly yelling out the unsuccessful very offensive play calling prior to the snap. If nothing changes this year my trip to Notre Dame will make a grand final farewell to my season ticket packages. I have the SEC network and my WIFI will always
be better as will my music selection than Sanford stadium has offered recently. I would certainly miss the band and being with friends. I hope I’m proven wrong this year and things really change. At this point given our current AD and his commitment to the reserve fund over championships its hard to have faith.

I have wondered for years why we didn’t renovate the indoor courts at UGA. I went to Tuscaloosa several years back when they hosted the SEC men’s tennis championship and was impressed with their new outdor and indoor courts. It’s sad that the reason we don’t have new indoor costs is not that we don’t have the money but because we won’t spend the money. McGarrity needs to go. Have any of his hires panned out?

I don’t think Manny will be going anywhere for at least 4 years. His youngest son is a redshirt freshman on the tennis team. Too bad Manny won’t get to see his son play in the main NCAA team championships in Athens.

100% Agree!! A few years ago, I took some friends that are serious tennis people (one played tennis at UF) to Athens to see the NCAA tournament. It was raining a little, so we went to the indoor facility. I was shocked at its condition and either it does NOT have AC or it was not working. The people from Stanford and UCLA were melting in the southern heat and humidity. I was embarrassed. I do not know, but I bet the other schools have caught and passed us (besides Alabama). It is no wonder we have not won the rights to host future NCAA tennis events!

Then the AD destroyed it and recently planted trees to block the ‘free’ view from the houses and decks beyond the right field fence.

Fox will be gone as soon as his buyout falls below a milion dollars.

With that in mind, I’m confident in predicting that you have a slew of things in your life that keep you busy — most of which are things that you actively have control or input over. Unfortunately, UGA football isn’t one of them, so I personally would recommend pulling back and, in a sense, detaching yourself from the program.

Don’t get me wrong, its still great being a fan and all, but when you treat UGA football as more of a casual entertainment outlet, then you will be a far happier and content fan overall. As mentioned previously I made this move 7-8 years ago, and I’ve never been happier (even though UGA football since has basically been a muddle through type of program with little to cheer for).

Selfishly, I want you to continue the current pace of your blog, but if you pull back on the content and/or eliminate it altogether, I will not only understand but, in a small sense, will applaud you.

The fact that McGarity, who played for Magill, and was part of one of the few programs at UGA with true championship heritage, screwed up the NCAA tournament coming to Athens speaks volumes about his incompetence.

The indoor courts could be renovated for a tiny fraction of the slush, er, reserve fund. It makes ME sick that the two-bit accountant running our athletics couldn’t actually run two projects at one time.

  20. McGarity needs to go, but I’m reminded of a conversation that I had once with a national radio host (who it was isn’t important): most college ADs are woefully unprepared for their job. Overwhelmingly, they are hangers on that Peter Principled their way into the big chair (Evans) or juiced in good ole boys with political connections (McG).

My point is that making the right hire is a total crapshoot bc no one knows how good of an AD most of these guys actually are bc each school is wildly different.

My feeling is that Greg needs to be fired yesterday and replaced with someone under the age of 45. Who that should be, I have no idea. But to me, the less ties he/she has with The Georgia Way and the booster network, the better.

The AD will be fired either after this football season, or next. It’s inevitable, the chatter will be too loud. Kirby’s not going to do jack shit with this staff, none of them can develop talent, last year was embarrassing, Kirby will never win more than 8 or 9 games a year, his team was unprepared for situations like GT, UT, and Vandy. They were not ready. Eason was not prepared well for the spring game, he looked terrible, no team with him at qb will ever win more than 9 games, a blind man could see that. Nothing new. Same ole story. The question is, WHEN the AD fired this year or next, WHO will replace them? Another dude learning on the job or a proven culture change maker? The power brokers will want a guy they can control, they don’t want to lose their power, they don’t want a Saban, they don’t want to change. The Senator has pegged the core issue long ago as a culture thing, and until you root it out, never gonna win a shiny trophy. Need proven leaders, in Admin, and as coaches, to get it done, based on what I’ve seen since 1980, I am skeptical the UGA culture will ever change. Chaney and Beamer Jr didn’t get fired after the 2016 7 & 5 record, seriously, how does that happen?

As a longtime fan and supporter of both men’s and women’ s tennis, along with several other programs this just made me sick when I read it yesterday. We have gone from the finest tennis facility in collegiate tennis to now not being considered good enough to host the NCAA’s anymore all under this —holes regime. And then to remark improvements would havetobedonor driven, why does the guy even open his mouth. Oh well another letter to Morehead and another threat to further reduce my dwindling contributions will again fall on deaf ears. Frustrated, frustrated, frustrated!

I was fortunate enough to see the UGA Men’s Tennis team win a NC on their home court when I was in college. It was a great experience that I’ll never forget. I love the country club sports and I know a lot of people in the comments of this blog don’t care about them. But to me they’re the difference between us being a football factory and being a great program.

I follow UCF a little. I’m convinced they have a far better AD, a better baseball coach, and a better basketball coach than we have at UGA. I’d trade all 3 in an even swap but would feel bad about pulling a fast one on our local mid-major.

        • I follow the AAC, CUSA, MAC, and Sunbelt probably more closely than I do the SEC so I really enjoyed watching how they got better progressively throughout the year. When Stephen Godfrey of SBNation.com was embedded with Willie Taggart’s staff at USF for a story last season, they were looking at film of UCF and felt that UCF was going to be good soon given how rapidly they were improving in execution and fundamentals over the course of the season.

Two indoor courts and some air conditioning.

    That’s all that was needed.

The 2012 championships turned a clusterf*ck when it started to rain.

Having only four poorly-ventilated indoor courts disrupted the team championships and made for a disjointed, uncomfortable experience for the participants and those fans who decided to stay.

At worst, it should have been a lesson-learned and a problem easily solved – five years ago.

Where was that mythical rainy-day fund, Greg?

    It’s still raining.

You have to admire UF- they fired Will Muschamp for not winning championships in 3 years. LSU too- Miles was axed for going into a non-championship slide. UGA Admin does not the same championship standard as far as expectations go. They hung onto Mark Richt for 11 years after he won his last championship, he would have been fired after 2010 by any team with a championship mentality. So the current AD buffoon was hired without a track record of winning championships as an AD because he was a cheap hire and a yes man, that we now know. And Kirby Smart and Mark Fox were hired without winning a championship as a head coach. The decision making on hires is not logical, they keep hiring admin and coaches who have never proven they can lead a team to a championship. Theo Epstein won Boston their first championship in 86 years, and then the Cubs hired him, HE changed the culture, and the Cubs won their first championship in 100+ years. Hire proven winners, get out the checkbook, get ready for wholesale change, that’s how you change the culture and win.

I applaud you for delving further into the mess that is the UGA Athletic Department because at the end of the day…

There is no doubt that among “all in” Georgia fans – those that follow every one of the sports teams – the current A.D. is a huge disappointment regardless of the puppeteers behind the scenes and the problem is only getting worse. The comparison of the records, talent levels and foreseeable futures of the teams with coaches who pre-date the current A.D. verses teams with coaches hired by the current A.D. is laughable. What is going to happen when Coach Bauerle, Coach Diaz, Coach Haack, Coach Wallace, Coach Boenig and Coach Harris-Champer reach their limits and walk away? President Morehead should ask any of them what they think of their current A.D.

What do the coaches above have in common other than inheriting Mr. McGarity? They have all guided teams to multiple SEC Championships and/or many National Championships, built and/or sustained top tier nationally recognized programs all while positively impacting the lives of thousands of student athletes. In the kindest words possible, Mr. McGarity has at best hired “life coaches.”

No matter who the nameless shadows are behind the curtain, if the fans, students and the honest media bring the problem to the forefront it WILL get fixed.

Since you are 100% Football on your blog Senator, this is a great topic during the football downtime that also relates to football as much as any other UGA topic. Your frustrations are in line with MANY other fans and you deservedly have a high pulpit so let it rip!

I`m surprised no one has mentioned Fran Tarkenton today. To my ears he was the band leader in the fire Mark Richt parade. This started years before Richt was fired. Weeks leading up to the firing he was on air being interviewed by anyone looking for a quote calling for Richts head stating we needed a Georgia man. I took that as the Georgia Way/BM wants Kirby Smart.

    • Otto

Tarkenton was one of the more outspoken wanting Richt gone and was also the 1st announced donor for the IPF, I didn’t remember him saying we needed a Georgia man but I am certainly not saying he didn’t say that. I would also wager Tarkenton isn’t the biggest donor to B-M and in my opinion from what little I can find UGA does not have a clear biggest donor with those that follow his lead. It seems UGA likely has multiple factions of wealth donors.

You could also bring up Leebern, and his backing of Adams, and his marriage to and subsequent retirement of Yoculan.

Do these figure work together to better UGA and B-M or is the disorganization and failures we see a reflection of the influential alumni?

Fran has on air mentioned his close relationship with the current President. I don’t seem to remember him having much involvement with Dr. Adams. I agree with you that he announced himself as the first donor for the JPIDPF ( hope I got the lexicon correct its been a long day). Over time I don’t remember him being one of the top donors not that I`m in that loop.

        • Otto

That is part of my point who are the top donors? Is B-M constantly weighing the influence of a handful of donors against another group?

Richt was an example of this, it seems across all levels of the fan base you have those that very much liked Richt and those that very much wanted him gone.

I’ve heard from several people with first hand knowledge that Tarkenton is nothing more than a leach and a groupie. One even told me he’s great at spending other people’s money, but never willing to kick in any of his own, so I’d be surprised if he’s doing much financially other than tooting his own horn.

Senator, the tone you set is not even close to negative…it is realistic. I like to think the disgust this site has shown for the incompetence at the BM has something to do with the heat they are getting. I like to think Dr. Morehead being asked about the AD in a presser recently has come from a grassroots campaign of disgruntled people who cannot fathom the missteps shown by AD heads and its Board given the incredible pile of cash they have- especially when a lot of the missteps appear to have cash at the cusp of the solution. To me hiring the right people and hanging on to the wrong ones seems to be about cash and contract buyouts.
The tennis facility is why we don’t get the championships anymore. The 2012 championships were a disaster. The NCAA is not going to make Athens the choice again until the facilities are upgraded. Manny knows that. Mcgarity knows that. While we are on the topic…how much does it cost to build a tennis court? We aren’t building the damn Venetian.

“I’m not sure how much longer I can give a shit about UGA football.” I’m not quite to that point but I’m closer than I’ve ever been before and the fact that I’m close enough to not scoff at such a statement is almost unthinkable to me. Yet here I am. The 2013 season seems like a really long time ago. It was ultimately a disappointing season but it was the last time UGA football was exciting and the last time it felt like good things were actually not too far off. The people who run the show don’t give a rat’s ass so I don’t know how much longer I can. I gave up on the Falcons long ago and don’t even watch NFL football. There was a time I couldn’t have imagined that being the case. And now I’m actually at a point where I can envision a day where I don’t really care about UGA football anymore either. I don’t want that to happen. But Butts Mehre just might make it possible.

I agree with Mr. C. Dawg that the A.D. questions are coming up because the situation is FINALLY coming to a head.

While I think President Morehead is much different than Mr. Adams, I do think Mr. McGarity is a LOT like Mr. Adams and it was during Mr. Adams presidency at UGA that the “Georgia Way” as its now called first took root.

Men like Mr. Adams and Mr. McGarity are like Federal Politicians; they start out with conviction and a strong code of ethics only to be intoxicated by power and access while becoming addicted to the money keeps it all going. They become entitled and create large teams of “staff” to tackle the “people” and their issues all while closing their circle of access to a select few who are likeminded or who are their “pushers.”

Watch a U.S. Senator work a room at a function. These people are experts at sizing up someone they meet and within seconds determining if that person can help them or not. If the answer is yes a door is cracked and someone on staff follows up a short time later. If the answer is no that person’s card goes to a staff gatekeeper who will run interference until the unsuspecting rube gives up trying to reconnect with the Senator.

Men like Mr. Adams and Mr. McGarity don’t speak to professors or coaches – their time is way too valuable! Besides, that’s what their underlings and admins are supposed to do so they can have time for the really important matters with really important people.

I understand the alumni/booster/board influence factor but I doubt the situation at UGA is worse than at Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Texas, Nebraska, Michigan, etc…

The real problem in the UGA Athletic Department is we have a bad A.D. and we must implore President Morehead to sort things out.

My sense, like yours is that the big problem is the A.D. The shadow boosters and board members certainly don’t help but I have a hard time believing there is a conspiracy by these people to sabotage UGA athletics the way some people believe.

Without question. Mr. McGarity was quoted as being sick to his stomach regarding the tennis announcement and depressed to speak to Coach Diaz about the matter. If Mr. McGarity had regular contact with Coach Diaz I can’t imagine how either of his conditions would make sense. What’s even worse is Mr. McGarity and Coach Diaz were TEAMMATES AT GEORGIA. If Coach Diaz gets that level of support from Mr. McGarity it doesn’t speak well for the other coaches on staff.

Speaking of Coach Diaz, his team just won both the regular season and SEC Tournament Championships and he just won SEC Coach of the Year for the 6th time in his career. It’s not football but there ARE 5 SEC teams ranked in the NCAA top 25 so the conference is for sure competitive.
