I’m not sure why we’re supposed to be appalled by this. I’m not sure I’ve ever been to a tailgate where there haven’t been guns around. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever been around a large gathering of people, other than school or athletic events, where there haven’t been guns. You know what? I’ve also never seen a weapon drawn in anger. #fakenews

Well I certainly think we should rely on your experience in this matter. I always thought Sarah Brady was a flawed spokesperson for gun control. Why not trust someone who hasn’t had a loved one shot by a mentally disabled person with a gun?
I’ve never been shot by a diagnosed schizophrenic on LSD, PCP and heroin, so why should anyone concern themselves with it?

The problem with Sarah Brady and the Brady Campaign to End Gun Violence is that John Hinckley used a cheap piece of shit Röhm RG-14 .22 to shoot Reagan, Brady, et al., but they instead to focus on guns that ignorant people think look scary even though they are almost never used in crime.
“Gun Violence” legislation has the same flaws as the abortion laws. Gun legislation never deals with criminals or the mentally ill; it is always aimed at disarming law abiding citizens. Abortion laws are never about making abortions unnecessary (e.g. making birth control OTC); they are always aimed at harassing women or taking away their options.

I agree. 18 USC 922(g) is clearly aimed at law abiding citizens. As is 18 USC 924. How can one read either and not see that obvious truth?

You are missing the point. If you think things like making inter-state sales of guns illegal is effective, why not just pass a law that says it is illegal to kill someone with a gun? Passing laws has generally little effect on the actions of criminals.
If you actually want to do something about “gun violence” you have to address things like the war on drugs (btw: I would like to congratulate an unarmed plant for winning the war on drugs), inner-city education / culture, community / police relations, etc. Guns are a tool. When you make it hard to get a tool, people just use another one. The people of China have almost no access to guns. They do have a phenomenon that we do not have though. Mass “stabbings”. They have really bad problems with dudes running into schools and hacking a bunch of kids to death with a machete.
The modern left, in their pursuit to stop “gun violence”, completely focus on the gun part. They seem as if they would be completely fine with 20 kids being hacked to death with a machete so long as there wasn’t a gun involved (yes, I know I’m being trite, but I am talking about messaging). If you want to stop “gun violence” you need to focus on the violence part.

Hodgie, Saturday-night Specials have been around for a long time and not many people in Sowega gave a shit because blacks were killing blacks with guns when segregation ruled the day.
Most whites had guns at that time as well and the only time they used them was for hunting or killing snakes. I can’t even count the number of harmless water snakes I killed while saving mankind from the bite of a moccasin. All of that was borne out of ignorance and I no longer carry that vendetta for the creature mentioned in my early Bible training, in fact, I will shoo them off the road in lieu of flattening them with my tires; I catch and release them live (mostly rat snakes, but a few poisonous ones are mixed in as well) to protect the birds I attract and enjoy and to keep them from frightening the wife (had one to become enamored of my wife, but got rid of it when it rose from behind a path log to greet her heading indoors). But the symbolism for carrying a gun nowadays has changed from the past since we only feared those blacks in the past if they escaped from a nearby chain gang.
Segue into the present and there is a different reason to carry guns out of fear of another type of gang. It’s a baseless fear unless you live in select inner cities with differing racial ghettos (a place where not many here have any experience living or visiting) and/or you have conspiracy theories. I think that carrying a gun nowadays makes you the next target. Just take a look at the buying and hoarding of guns and ammo that’s been going on for some time down here and big time out West. Couldn’t buy .22 bullets unless someone tipped me off that a new shipment had hit Walmart, and when I did, the price was jacked to $6.00/box. My squirrels have proliferated in the meantime. Why would people buy and horde if they don’t anticipate using them? Against whom? The Indians? Conspiracy theory Republicans exist, Hodgie because I have known them for years, including a son-in-law who practiced in the dark how quickly he could get his Glock out of the gun safe underneath his bed. He also spent a fortune (and still does) by attending automatic weapons school in Pahrump, Nevada. I wouldn’t say that any of that can end well. I have shooting trophies (earned), just to let you know that I enjoy shooting as a sport, but automatic weapons and caches of ammo ain’t sport. People who grew up using guns aren’t usually found with weapons caches.
These remarks aren’t intended to affront those in law enforcement nor your desire for all sporting shoots. It’s a protest against carrying guns in public crowds.

Are you saying that the pyramids were built to honor those who fought and died on behalf of the interests of slave owners? All this time I thought that they were elaborate tombs for Pharoahs.
We’re the pyramids built by people who declared they were monuments to their own racial superiority? I think Ramses thought he was better than everyone including other Egyptians, but again you’re free to correct me.
Are Jewish children forced go to public schools named after Ramses? I thought the Jews left for Israel but if after they won their freedom if any Egyptians asked them to honor their dead in perpetuity that would be of interest here.

Some people understand that certain Americans, that they actually respect as human beings, see Jefferson Davis being honored as equivalent to asking Jewish kids to attend Joseph Geobbles High School. That would be, among other things, stupid. If you don’t know what stupid is, find a bathroom and look around. You’ll find it soon enough.

I really don’t feel entitled to my own facts, I simply recognize the fact that the entire history of nineteenth century American can’t be boiled down to a few paragraphs from a Middle School textbook. Obviously, I’m in the minority on that.
Since you don’t like schools named after murderers, do you think we should remove the names of Lincoln, Kennedy, and Roosevelt from schools? Or do black and Jewish victims trump victims of other races?
You’re the biggest hypocrite I know of. You want to hate nineteenth century Southerners because they lived in a society that permitted slavery, regardless of whether they participated in the practice. And because of your assumed moral superiority, you feel safe in honoring mass murder. Holocaust against Jews is bad. Holocaust against Southerners is good. It’s disgusting.

As fast as you fight the “Wild West” atmosphere of gun ownership and carry laws, the faster the conservative mentality of the past will work to implement any law that will prevent interruption of past laws meant to make the population safe from the “inner city hordes” that cause most conservatives to be frightened like scared rabbits. And “Why not?”.
The years of progress in civil rights for all comes with the caveat of “If they are going to force me to live and hobnob with “them”, then I’m going to protect me and mine from “those people” by passing laws that will shortcut all that due process that liberals want to shove down our throat and is a danger to our “society”.”. A majority of white people seeks new ways to postpone the inevitable; some ways that we haven’t even heard yet. For their hearts and minds to assimilate civility and fairness fully into society, you would have to prevent families from passing the innate prejudices of the past into the minds of the future. You would have to create laws that will make it punishable to speak prejudicially of others. That ain’t going to happen and white males will do anything to prevent it from happening in the future, i.e., you got your fancy laws, but none of them have the “got ’em by the balls” penalties that can force me to like “them”. That’s one reason Trump was elected, to push back at those who have forced “me and my family” to have to resort to guns. Unfortunately for that mentality, the carry law works for all, therefore, armed race encampments shooting at each other has increased in probability to the point that past paranoia is fast becoming a possibility. And the NRA has become another temple of worship.
“Monument Laws” is the latest way to stop the eradication of Southern history that satisfies many who want to continue oppressing others who look up from the bottom of the deck. Carry laws are a temporary measure to ensure that dissatisfaction of the oppressed can be met by bullets from some pockets of conservative dissatisfaction. Until prejudices are overcome by education of many in the “Christian” right, you will continue to live with these conundrums. And, if you haven’t noticed, even public education is being assailed from the Christian right that Betsy DeVos will proceed to make into “God’s Kingdom” for those who no longer don hoods and burn crosses to intimidate minorities. Efforts to strengthen the courts for the Christian Right to continue to erode our Constitution and impose “Christian Values” through secular teachings in public schools is underway. It’s a last gasp that won’t work, but it’s going to scare the shit out of us, something that guns will never do.

Give me a fucking break. You think laws affirming the Second Amendment will lead to race wars and then accuse others of being paranoid? You think that monuments honoring ancestors defending against foreign invaders are meant to subjugate minorities? Should we, instead, build monuments honoring those Southerners who had the civility to just lay down and die when Sherman’s goons razed the South? I mean, sure most Southerners didn’t own slaves, but they lived near slave-owners and many of their political leaders owned slaves. Surely that’s worthy of death sentences for the men, women, and children and the theft of their property, amirite?
By the same token, since your political leaders have bombed the Middle East for the last 20 years, would ISIS be justified in invading the USA and killing your entire family? You certainly wouldn’t resist that would you? You live in a country that tries to influence the entire world. Even if you disagree with your government, that still makes you evil, no?

I think a reasonable expectation in 1860 would have been to recognize that slaves were just as human as anyone else. Slave owners and thier conspirators failed to meet that expectation, as did many northerners.
A reasonable expectation in 1870 would have been for southerners to incorporate former slaves into society as any other. They failed to meet those expectations, as did many northerners.
In 1954 it would have been a reasonable expectation that the south would follow and respect the decision in Brown vs. Board of Education. Instead in response the south raised the confederate battle flag over every capital in the old confederacy. The south again failed to meet reasonable expectations. Instead the south elected politicians who were for segregation today, tomorrow and forever.
In 2017 it is reasonable to expect that southerners would see that the old south, while admirable in many ways, was and has continued to be marred by ideas of racial superiority. As such any monument, flag, plaque that wishes to honor the old confederacy is honoring a regrettable past and present: white supremacy over blacks. As usual, the south continues to fall short. Why? Too many southerners think in their heart of hearts that they are really better than their darker skinned neighbors. Or they are callously indifferent to the perspectives of those burdened by that past. Until that changes for good, the south will continue to fall short.

In other words, you want to argue that people of the past should have had twenty-first century values. Unsurprisingly, that’s a stupid expectation. Not even Saint Lincoln believed in the equality of blacks and whites. Of course he believed, and proclaimed, that blacks were inferior to whites. The Civil War wasn’t fought to free slaves. It was fought to subjugate the South.
So, you believe that the South should have meekly accepted Brown, Reconstruction, and Sherman’s pillaging as deserved retribution from a superior society of the North. Can you say the same about the Alien and Sedition Acts, the Fugitive Slave Act, and Plessy v. Ferguson? Those were established in the same manner. They were unpopular, but clearly established by the federal government. Why should we honor the people of Wisconsin for nullifying the Fugitive Slave Act yet condemn the people of Louisiana for wanting to break away from the federal government? Your answer is simply to wait a couple of centuries and see what social convention will allow. Well, that’s not very fair to people of the past.
But kudos to your virtue signaling of standing up against slavery. It is certainly very brave of you to insist that you are 100% against a practice outlawed for 150 years. I wonder what kind of virtue signaling you would have used in, say 1830, when 98% of politically active Americans were in favor of slavery? I have a hunch that you wouldn’t have been nearly so progressive.

Anybody is entitled to declare independence. The trick is winning. That’s a major difference between the US and the south. Who has declared independence from their government and gotten a “sure, why not?” The sense of entitlement really is that strong ain’t it?
