Reader poll: “Does Fromm redshirt now?”

It’s June.  There’s nothing substantive going on in Dawgnation for us to chew on.  So, using Seth Emerson’s piece as a jumping off point, I thought I’d ask you guys to weigh in on what Kirby Smart and Jim Chaney should do with their quarterbacks.

Mind you, I’m not asking you to predict what will happen.  This is about your present opinion about what would be the best course of action.  In making your choice, assume for the sake of argument that nobody gets injured during the season.  (Were that to happen, all bets would be off, I would expect.)

Feel free to explain yourself in the comments.

  1. Given that it looks like we’re missing on all the top in state qbs this year, it makes sense to RS Fromm if you can. If Lawrence or Fields or Jones were coming, I’d feel differently about getting Fromm some live snaps, but right now it looks like they ain’t.

No one, fan or coach, can exclude any of those choices as each could become the best answer at this point depending on how things develop. That said, I feel #2 is my preference for how I hope it goes, and also feel that it is far and away the best for UGA’s success.

I also voted for number 2. If this season and next were throw aways, I would say RS him, but we have a legitimate shot at winning the SEC East and possibly more. We need a back-up QB with live game experience in the event Eason gets injured. While I appreciate Ramsey’s dedication, we’ve seen what he can do at QB. I don’t know that Fromm would be better or worse, but I think we need to get him some snaps and find out. There are plenty of cupcakes on the schedule to make it happen.

That was my primary rationale as well, if you really want to be a serious contender have all available talent on the field, including getting some real time experience for two QBs. Regardless of order, your best alternative for backup should be completely prepared to assume the lead role on any given play. For many reasons I think 2017, particularly, is important for UGA going forward, I want all hands on deck.

Class separation of top talent is an outdated concept in the modern game; play your very best option on every play and plan on recruiting top talent to replace those on the field, every year. It is like leaving your money in a 3 year CD to handle future emergencies while your roof has a leak in it and a storm is on the horizon. Let’s deal with the current needs first and develop/work on a new plan for the more distant issues.

          Amen
          Play to win now.
I’m not going to blame this coaching staff for “not ‘cruising/getting commitments” from the 2018 qb GA HS class.
We have two stud qb with Ramsey on the ready five for whatever.
I don’t understand some folks thinking on this.

Your first sentence is why I don’t believe the coaches dwell on this as much as we do – much is out of their control. I’m sure they have contingency plans, but thats probably about where it ends.

I would definitely hold out as long as possible with playing Fromm with hopes of RS this year to create a gap year. Eason proved very durable last year and is helped by not being a RPO guy in terms of chances of a major injury. I would say a large part of this depends on how summer/fall camp goes and how the QB competition goes. Unless Eason is just not into it or not doing the work and Fromm blows him out of the water (doubtful this will happen) I would ride with Eason and hope Fromm doesn’t have to play this year.

Again, presuming no real injuries to Eason….

If you can trust Ramsey to be steady whenever he has to come in for a play or two if, say, Eason’s helmet comes off or he needs tape or whatever, then hopefully option one.

On the other hand, if Fromm can be trusted not to press, but seriously has the talent to keep a drive going in those situations? Maybe option two.

This might not be “the” year, but it could. Either way it definitely should be a big year and we need every drive to count, and I’d hazard a guess thats going to be the coaches’ primary motivation in the decision. Which leads me to believe option two is what happens.

Doesn’t the new RS rules exclude the need for worrying about a few plays costing a player a year of eligibility. I didn’t pay close enough attention to the effective date but I thought this was approved. Doesn’t change my position much, still want to use all my needed ammo every game, and I want to get my top 2 QBs some live, meaningful experience.

    Senator:
You didn’t give us the REAL option that would clearly win:

Fromm starting, Bennett as backup, Eason redshirt.

I want Fromm to redshirt this year.

I also would love to see that rule enacted that would allow players to participate in up to four games while retaining their redshirt. That would be the best option, to get his feet wet and get him a little experience but keep his eligibility on ice and create separation between him and Eason.

Yes, this! I voted for number 1, but with some reservations. Those reservations would go away if Fromm could play in a couple of games if needed and still keep his shirt. At the same time, while I think we know that Brice is not as good as we hoped when he was signed, I feel good with him coming in to play some. That also will be especially true if the line is as good as we hope, and Nick and Sony are rambling, etc. It really isn’t all on the QB.

I also like that rule. It’s basically a reinvention of Junior Varsity football without actually having to play real JV football. If you’re murdering a cupcake, your undersized true freshman lineman should absolutely be able to go into the game.

Best for the team is to red-shirt Fromm and creat separation. Play him some next season as a RS freshman behind JR Eason in probably his last year.

How about another poll: Do you think UGA should get Nike to get rid of the toilet bowl collars on the football jersey? Or change the number font?

      Yes. And HELL YES.

Traditional schools with traditional uniforms should not have italic’y looking number fonts. Jesus.

We should have dumped Nike two years ago and given Adidas and Under Armour a chance to make a pitch. Instead, it appears McGarity bent over for Nike just like he does everyone else and got stuck with a lower-rung deal that runs through 2024. We don’t compare well in the following list. I’m interested to see what kind of deal Alabama, UNC, and Oklahoma get next year. And the last team on the list, Rutgers, starts a new deal with UA soon worth an estimated 10 million a year. Unbelievable.

Jeebus, that’s embarrassing! McGoofy got absolutely hosed in our deal and locked it in until 2024, WTF? Sad that schools like Duke, AZ State, etc. are even making more per year than we are off of the apparel deal. The got is incompetent in so many ways and yet he manages to collect his $700k a year without any concern.

Wait, did the “you can play in up to 4 games and still redshirt” rule become effective or not? My answer would be different if it did.

I’ve got a better idea. Red shirt Chaney until his game-planning equals or exceeds Schotty’s. And that shouldn’t be too hard.

There’s two options here. Both include waiting for Justin fields and whether or not he will commit to the Dawgs.

If he does commit, Kirby will not redshirt Fromm. I think this because by the time Eason leaves, Fields will be heading into his sophomore year and most likely take the starting role from Fromm.
If Fields goes somewhere else, Kirby will redshirt Fromm, essentially making Fromm a 2018 commit because of the extra year. In this way, he would be basically substituting the loss of not getting Fields.

So now the guy with another year (2?) in high school is way better than our true freshman who hasn’t played a game who, in turn, is way better than our current QB who has played all of 1 freshman season, and who himself was the greatest thing since sliced bread before playing said 1 season ?Just checking.

BTW, just take me out to the pasture and shoot me if I’m ever discarded to the dust bin this quickly.

Keep Fromm ready and maybe get him some game reps early this season. If Eason blossoms, you can then RS Fromm his sophomore season and still get two seasons out of him.

I think that question should be asked of Fromm; if he doesn’t want to redshirt for a year, then he shouldn’t. Should be his decision and not the coaches.

  17. Other than Eason getting hurt, I don’t see Fromm getting any decent PT so red shirt him. He can still practice and getting maybe 10 snaps in cleanup isn’t gonna prepare him any more than not getting them. If the staff thinks he could win the starting job then maybe not but I’ve heard nothing to make me think that’s the case. “Fromm has come in ready to compete” isn’t convincing.

You really know how to rile up your readers. When news is slow just take a poll on what to do with the backup QB. How was one of the options not start Fromm and bench Eason???

I think they should treat this exactly like they did with Hutson Mason in 2012. The goal would be to redshirt Fromm, but he and Brice both practice like they are co-#2. You need three game ready QBs. The only question would be is Fromm one of the 3, or do you prep Slingin’ Sammy and have Fromm run the scout team. I think you prep Fromm.

Option #4: Start Eason; Sam Vaughn-backup; redshirt Fromm; Ramsey-punter and emergency QB.
