Perception is a beyotch.

Georgia’s athletic department may not be working as hard as we’d like to achieve excellence on the field, but nobody there is sleeping on working the refs.

That’s where I believe there is a disconnect between what we do here at DawgNation and what UGA would have us do. We’re too negative, they say. We don’t draw enough attention to what the Bulldogs are doing well.

For instance, the folks at UGA have been on me for a while to draw some positive attention to the fact that the Bulldogs finished 15th as a program in the in the Learfield NACDA Directors’ Cup standings for the 2016-17 academic year. They feel that hasn’t been put that in proper context.

… Here at DawgNation, we’ve been accused by UGA – and a few fans, here and there– of being too negative. But it’s my contention that we’re merely reflecting the negative sentiment that’s already out there. We hear about it in our email inboxes and read in comments sections here and on other fan sites.

McGarity can “First Word” the subject to death, but in another year of football mediocrity, the vast majority of Georgia’s fan base isn’t going to get pumped about a top 15 finish in the Directors’ Cup standings.  More significantly, you can’t have it both ways, fellas.  If you count on the fan base’s apathy regarding any program that isn’t football — and you do — then don’t start whining when we don’t get excited about anything outside of football.

The irony of it all is McGarity was brought here seven years ago from Florida – where he served in a No. 2 role for 18 years – for the express purpose of seeing that Georgia closed the gap on the Gators. Instead it has only widened.

Even more importantly, consider that what generates fan enthusiasm isn’t the media pushing Greg McGarity’s spin on Georgia athletics.  It’s results on the field, pure and simple.  Butts-Mehre, get your priorities straight, and maybe you won’t have to worry about what Chip Towers writes.

Sounds like McG and UGA want someone to be their Sean Hannity.

What they want is for the media to put some lipstick on their pig. UF wants to rule the East and they do. McGoo was a pencil pusher for the best Ad in the SEC but he did not learn much. Here’s hoping that we haven’t let him repeat our mistake by hiring the best assistant coach to the best coach of the SEC and finding out it wasn’t Kirby it was Saban all along.

Note that when Foley retired the GayTurds didn’t exactly beat down B-M’s door trying to hire McCheap as their new AD–even though he had been an assistant there for 18 years. That says something right there.

As someone who firmly believes that the AJC has totally sold all its “journalistic integrity” (if there ever was such a thing) to get hits and clicks, and who also believes they have been overly negative in the past and/or tried to gin up controversies in order to generate said hits and clicks, I can promise you I have zero interest in reading more than perhaps a single article about how we did in the Directors Cup… What does McGarity want, multiple front page articles on it? Story probably belongs below the fold on the back page…
PS, will anyone share whether anything interesting was said at Kirby’s single semi-public appearance in the State of Georgia this offseason (I think it was yesterday or perhaps this afternoon)? If so, you can have “The First Word” here…

It’s a long off-season. There is still plenty of time for click-baiting articles about to losing to Ole Miss, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Georgia Tech.

Just reading the tea leaves here, but it appears there is some bad blood between the Athletic Department and the media. I’m guessing the delay in open records and the media bus showing up after practices ended last year might have something to do with it.

While this post appears to be a dog whistle for those that want to tee off on GMac, ( And, I am one of those), I’m going to resist and point out that the underperformance, chintziness and parochial nature of our Athletic Dept. have been the norm for decades. A good example of this is our 20+ year resistance to an indoor practice facility. Going back to the days of Saint Vince Dooley we were very smug in our “what a waste of money” response to why we didn’t have one or plans for one as rivals one by one built them. This was about the same time we became overly proud of our Re$erve Fund, Georgia was “well run” by the staid and no nonsense Dooley. You’ll see.

Then Saban gets to Bama and points out to the suddenly stupid rest of the world that no only are IPF’s a required weapon in the recruiting arms race, but that the Tide practices in their’s everyday for a variety of really good reasons that all are directly related to Bama turning the SEC into a Western movie with one cowboy and 13 Indians. That, and some pressure from an admittedly too big for his britches DC, and we’re suddenly requesting bids on a $30 million project. Similar response when Spurrier got to UF and that program not only zoomed past us in football, never to look back, but the entire operation started to make ours look like an amateur operation. We started doing things their way.

We follow. We don’t lead. We don’t have the stomach for it. All the while, make a note of who UF hired to replace GMac. Nobody. Obviously, he was a real key player down there.

    Shoot the messenger. Message remains.

I’m so reluctant to get into this conversation, somebody will surely be a dick about it. But my two cents worth, being an owner of several newspapers, radio stations, tv stations, and websites is that Chip Towers who I know quite well it’s being disingenuous here.

Chip had a roll is setting that negative opinion that he so altruisticly reports. It’s so easy with one twist of a headline to shape public opinion, and yes, even that of the most ardent fan.

The more salacious the headline the better. The actual article being salacious, even better.

It’s that his fault? Is he evil?

No. That’s his role. What sux is that we consumers don’t buy good news. Put a boy scout feeding a sheep on a front page and no one buys it. Put Jim McIlwayne fucking a shark and it’ll go viral.

Towers and others helped form the negative perception around the program. Was there negativity to report? Sure. Was the “majority” pic the fanbase sour on Richt? Not even close.

Now he’ll continue to twist that story line everytime he gets a chance, just on Kirby now. Kirby’s job #2 is to give him nothing he can twist. And Kirby knows that, but he also knows the media in his seat is both the enemy and a tool. To be used to his advantage whenever possible and mistreated whenever necessary. See, they use him as a tool, to get clicks, views, sell ads and so on. It’s hypocrisy for them to get posed when he uses them. That’s why he treats them just like his former boss did. They don’t like him, and as far as he’s concerned they can all fuck themselves. Which should be his opinion and that’ll fly just fine as long as he wins. Just like his former boss does.

    • Maybe I missed something here, but I thought Chip was writing about McGarity and the athletic department.

As far as negativity goes, you really think the AJ-C and the rest of the media wouldn’t make a big deal about, say, Georgia winning the SEC? Of course they would, because there would be plenty of interested viewership to attract.

The truth is that you’re both right. The press has an agenda: clicks. They’ll take them wherever they can get them.

The coaches and the AD have an agenda: drive a positive narrative.

If the folks at UGA want good press, win. If they want everything to seem as if the sky is falling, don’t.

The only thing different between tuscaloosa and Athens is that the Atlanta press won’t be cowed. Saban was able to set his expectations for the media on day one and get away with it. The ajc wouldn’t take that crap for a second, and I say good for them.

Everybody has a job to do and it ain’t chip’s job to coach and it ain’t Greg’s job to write articles. If the readership can’t distinguish reality from bullshit, well what’s new about that?

The team went 7-5 losing to Florida, Tenn, Vandy, and GTech, not a lot of positivity to report there. Journalism is about keeping the spin real. Chip’s right, finishing No 2 overall in the Director’s Cup in the SEC is a big deal, but losing to Florida will not win the SEC, and Florida’s offense sucked the last 2 years, this year they got a brand new Qb and a brand new DC, and UGA has more talent, no excuses.

pre-season or post-season? Preseason all SEC and top 20 pre-season in the polls, the Georgia way. Georgia has recruited so well, and is such a talent rich state, it’s mind boggling the waste of talent that has come through the University’s doors. Kirby was brought in to change that and all he’s done is keep the focus on bringing in talent. Good luck with that, been there done that for 15 years.

The article could have been about anything, you can interchange the subjects. I see how Chip says “who me, what did I do” and it aggravated me.

Of course they’d make a huge deal about it. But don’t get it twisted, it’s not because they’re happy UGA did something good. It’d be because THAT would also sell papers, get clicks, and sell advertising and sponsorships.

Take me for example. I own the newspaper in Clemson SC… I can’t stand Clemson U, but I sold 40,000 poster reprints of our front page for $20 each, you do the math. Was I happy Clemson won? Nope, pissed actually. But I bought a new Moomba to play on Lake Keowee this summer so whatever.

Only two ends of the spectrum result in media sales, either delirium which is incredibly difficult to produce, or visceral hatred which can easily be fostered and manipulated. Hulk Hogan once said in an interview after he became a heel, it doesn’t matter if the crowd boos or cheers, as long as they aren’t quiet when I come out.

But, see, Hal, that’s where I agree with you. It’s not about anything other than delivering what people will read, because that’s what sells. The idea that there’s actual animus behind what the AJ-C prints is delusional, because irrational behavior by its writers and editors would work against the paper’s commercial interests.

That’s why the athletic department shouldn’t worry about influencing what Towers writes; it should devote itself to making sure there’s a good story about Georgia athletics that writes itself.

Hal misses the point. Florida is kicking our asses in football and basketball. It’s similar to how Richt won @10 games a year and lost to UF almost every time unless Muschamp was coaching. Win the right games. Towers blows Hal away in this one.

Nah, Towers would love to have me sign his paycheck. He’ll never blow me away on anything.

You guys are missing the point. And infusing your own anti-Butts-Mehre ahead as well. Listen, you’ll never get me to say AD GM is even modest, I think he’s awful.

My point is Chip’s comment that he’s just reporting the facts. He’s not. He’s reporting the facts that he wants to report, that he and his bosses know will generate emotion.

Another example, 300 people at signing day when Kirby spoke. One guy pissed that Kirby didn’t answer questions who did Chip interview? What did the headline the next day read? You already know that answer. It sure as fuck didn’t say, “one fan upset while hundreds clapped”. That’s what happened, er… That’s the facts as you might put it.

Point is facts are just like stats, they can be manipulated to the degree the writer chooses whether you’re too encompassed to see it it not. Your naivete surely make it any less true.

Are there issues? YES. Does Kirby need to win? HELL YES-NOW. Is Chip innocent in fostering the perception that UGA is mediocre? NO.

But again, read my first post and work on your comprehension, I clearly said that perception is on the coaches to fix and not give him the material to screw them over with which I think based on his demeanor toward them Kirby totally understands.

They can’t be mad when he spins had news into the sky is falling. But likewise he doesn’t need to cry “journalistic integrity” when they add why all he writes is the bad shit. He sold his integrity years ago.

UGA placed 15th in the DC in a terrible year. Clemson placed… 52nd in a Nc year.

I think you’re missing Hal’s point completely, unless I missed where he’s blaming the football teams performance last year on Chip Towers, lol. What I gathered is that bad news sells better than good news which is absolutely true in today’s world, regardless of the outlet. Sure both get reported on, but you will read 10 stories about someone getting murdered or robbed before you read 1 about a good samaritan helping a stranger in need. That’s all he’s saying, is that the AJ-C is more than eager to jump and harp on the negative angles than the positive ones, bc that’s what people want to read and will react to.

You missed the point, slow down and read the post again… slower… slower…

I’m not straddling the fence at all. I am not blaming Chip Towers for the football team going 7-5 last year. However, if you don’t think the media and by media I mean primarily two sources (the AJC & ESPN) didn’t affect the narrative on Mark and the program then you’re just naive as hell.

Look, I’ll try to dumb it down further, the AJC is a very good news outlet. And no they don’t pump sunshine. Good for them, that’s not their job. Likewise you can’t be upset with the PR arm of the UGA AD for trying to get their “good news” out there, that’s also their job.

But then somewhere in the middle lies the titty twister. In an effort to sell more papers and get more clicks Chip and his buddies play with the headlines. They slant the articles. “Richt misses out on another five star”, “Saban steals another one from Richt,” or whatever the case may be. They slant the coverage for two reasons: A) they are in the ATL which is Tech’s backyard and techies love negative UGA coverage but you know who else does… B) UGA fans– the most tortured fan base in America eats that shit up. It’s so easy to manipulate you guys that most of you just suck it down whole and regurgitate it not even realizing A) you’re being manipulated and B) you’re hurting the program you claim to love.

“UGA has more talent than anyone”– UGA had one draftee last year for god’s sake. After the 2013/14 implosions our talent base was embarrassing.

“You can’t possibly blame us and the media for the program being hurt,” you might say… well yes, yes I can.

When Johnny Five star and his mom/dad are reading papers like the AJC that had Mark on the hot seat for 7 years, and your comments, and my comments, and Chip Towers editorials, or Jeff Schitz editorials are all constantly lambasting the coach, the athletic director, the entire program how in the hell do you guys think that has no effect? It absolutely has an effect on the program.

Last year in the playoffs Deshaun Watson, Reuben Foster, and Raekwon McMillan were all the heart and souls of three playoff teams. Two of them were committed to Mark as I recall and left citing instability in the program as the reasons they were going elsewhere. Now I’m not sure we ever had a realistic shot at Watson but imagine those 3 guys playing in Athens (assuming the 2013 class didn’t implode) and what have you got? One helluva team. Recruiting is the life of the program, we can all admit that. And the negativity that is generated by our Atlanta media has an effect on the recruiting… y’all can hurl your little insults all you want but if you don’t understand that then that’s on you.

But this is where it all comes full circle. The AJC and Chip have a job to do, so does AD GMcG, and so does Kirby. So we can’t get mad when they all do their jobs. Kirby just has to win, and if he does that it’ll make everyone else’s easier.

I haven’t straddled a fence yet. I have simply stated three times now that Chip Towers’ “what’d I do” comments are just horse-shit. If you’re going to be the dick at least own it.

Hope so. I don’t see why everyone expects the Georgia offense to do better, it’s virtually last year’s offensive personnel (minus 3 o linemen) and the same coaches. Muschamp struggled with offense at Florida, looks like Georgia just bought itself a similar situation. I would have loved to have hired an offensive specialist like Tom Herman, was he even interviewed, if not, why not, have you heard anything from insiders about how the hire was made? Looking at the Muschamp experiment at Florida, I was shocked to see the Georgia admin team pretty much go the same way.

                  Hal:

I looked at this years draft and thought, wow, no talent, until I researched it a little, and found out that Georgia ranked third in players drafted in the NFL. So the teams have been oozing with top tier talent.
                  https://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/stats/number-of-nfl-players-by-college/2016/

Also, 4 guys returned for their Senior season which would have easily been drafted and of course, McKenzie did get picked up.

And I thought media bias was effecting recruiting too but look at the last 4 or 5 classes have all been ranked in the top 10 in recruiting and last years was one of the best in a long time, so blogs and media, ESPN, and AJC, keep it up, is helping set recruiting records. Recruits look to whocan get them to the NFL, and UGA does that better than pretty much anybody.

I do agree with you that the AD and the AJC are doing a good job. I don’t fully agree with you that Kirby Smart is doing a good job, 8-5 is not an upgrade.

Let’s address that if we can. Yes UGA has plenty NFL players, but there’s a dearth currently. We aren’t talking about over the last ten years. We’re talking about why Mark got fired and why did Kirby go 8-5 with a LOADED roster that Mark left behind. It’s a fallacy, Mark didn’t leave a loaded roster behind. One player drafted last year. Anomaly you say? Meh, or is it? Five drafted last year. Five in 2015. “Well that’s pretty good, see how talented UGA is,” you ask…

                  So… eleven draftees in 3 years… from UGA…
                  LSU had 17.
                  Florida had 23.
                  Auburn had 13.
                  Miss State had 10.
                  Clemson had 22.
                  FSU had 17.
                  Bama had 25.

You don’t even want to start comparing the rounds here… We’re closer right now to Mississippi State than we are to Alabama.

That’s always been the narrative and for parts of his tenure under Richt it may have been true. But right now, and for the last couple years, no doubt since the 2013 implosion, UGA is not even top tier in terms of talent. We are barely hanging on in the middle of the pack. Where does middle of the pack talent get you? About 8-5. Kirby coached last year with his hands tied behind his back. And quite honestly he might have just coached his ass off. I’m still not on board with Cheney but that’s for another post.

As to the narrative and the media versus your top ten recruiting classes, your statement makes my entire point. You think top ten recruiting classes are good, and maybe they are. But they aren’t great, they aren’t elite.

In 2014, UGA had the #8 class in the country. Great right? Well… that was good enough for 6th place in the SEC. Whoa what? Yea… check it out: http://247sports.com/Season/2014-Football/CompositeTeamRankings
Well how about 2015? UGA was 6th in the country! In the country… but 4th in the SEC… damnit man. In 2016 we were 6th again… and yet again 4th in the conference. So what about that vaunted 2013 class that completely imploded and left few members even on the roster? It was 12th in the country and 6 SEC teams recruited better and that’s before we lost half the roster.

So see how a narrative can be spun so easily and so guys will just regurgitate it over and over? UGA has all this talent, just look at it. Well, since 2013 we’ve never finished higher than 4th in the conference in recruiting behind the usual Bama’s, LSUs, Florida and Auburn get in there above us once or twice, so did Ole Miss and Texas A&M.

We’ve got to consistently finish 2nd or better in the league in order to take the step that we all want to see taken. Kirby did that in 2017. We were maybe one player behind Bama, coaches can close that gap, hell injuries will just about level that playing field. But we have to be consistently in that rare air like Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State have been in order to make the playoffs like they have been.

Are they writing this stuff to get clicks? yes. But its because Chip and them know we all want to read articles about McG’s mediocrity, because that’s what we already believe. And they’ll continue to focus on his problems, big or small, because our opinion was set.

I long complained about McG for years before they ever started writing about it. Most of us feel it’s about time wider media started covering it.

Because the dollars haven’t stopped rolling in. The folks that can afford to fund the endzone expansions and to pay for endowed lobbies of IPFs are still writing checks. Why? I don’t know. Maybe the Athletics development office just does a good job at up selling the donor experience? Maybe all-access passes to practice and gameday suites is sweeter than performance on the field or court? UGA Athletics is in the business of selling an experience to its donors (not season ticket holders, mind you) and so far as McGarity’s employer(s) is/are concerned, business is good. It just so happens that many of those same donors are also fueling the current capital campaign for the University. If BM wants the AJC to focus on the positives its likely because any negativity dampens the excitement around those big checks. People spend when they’re optimistic and the AJC is harshing that generous mellow.

And bear in mind that optimism fluctuates. Just because the big checks are happy now doesn’t mean they’ll stay that way, nor does it mean that they’re right to be optimistic. We’re down here smelling the ass of declining performance. Let that bad smell build up enough for the well-healed to take notice and…. Point being: On-field performance is very much so McGarity’s job because it directly affects the longterm stability of the optimism that keeps the gravy train flowing. That it has taken longer than we’d think for the cahsflow to stop either says something about the sales job or the investors but it sure doesn’t excuse the on-field product.

In the off-season after the Liberty Bowl debacle, I posted on here that I would settle for a 1 win season if it was a big Florida beatdown.

    I’m there again.

I don’t know if we can beat Florida or not, but if Smart loses the next 2 times, Smart and the AD will be out, so relax, it either gets done or UGA pays the big bucks to get a proven winner and program builder in here next time.

The media is the enemy of the people. Fake news, believe me.

Greg is probably the most successful AD ever, trust me.

As far as the football program, he should just let it collapse. He doesn’t own it. It was a mess before he got here.

It’s all Damon Evans fault. What a disaster. And btw she wasn’t even a 6 on a good day.

As far as the rumors that greg told Florida that bauta would start so that Florida would win the game, that is so totally untrue, unless it is true it which case that would be fine. Who wouldn’t make that call?

    Confeve.

Just win something and this won’t be an issue. But no, nobody gives a rats ass about being an average of 15th place.

Going 7-5, McG has to sling a lot of bullshit spin around to make people feel good about 7-5. So Towers will dig in to the spin and remove the sheen of 7-5 disaster vbeing spun like we just won the BCS and beat Bama. We lost to VANDERBILT, on HOMECOMING. let that sink in.

Neither Richt or Goff had a team loaded with top 5 caliber talent like Smart did, Sony, Chubb, Joystick, and Co. That was as unreal as Saban losing to Nichols State, given the massive gap in talent, should never have even been a close game.

          • Only making the comment that last year wasn’t the first time we lost to Vanderbilt on Homecoming.

On the talent question, sure, there were some good pieces at skilled positions, but our offensive LOS was not good. Saban lost to Louisiana-Monroe. If we had lost to Nicholls, it would have been 10x worse.

Must not have read the fact I thought the 4th and 1 call was one of the worst play calls I’ve ever seen, the complete defensive breakdown on Vandy’s 3rd down screen pass or the failure to cover the opening kickoff. It was a terrible loss … embarrassing as a matter of fact.

It should be a bigger deal when a school loaded with national top 5 talent like Georgia loses to a school like Vanderbilt, at home, on homecoming. Have to do a lot of things wrong as a coach for that to happen. Shouls cause more than “it’s happened before, not unique. Other coaches did it too”

True, and they all got fired.

I guess it would be harder to analyze than being a bunch of tightwads but it appears to me there isn’t a competive spirit anywhere to be found in the UGA athletic administration. I believe that’s why they’re so good at saving money, they don’t give a crap about winning so why spend it. Losing doesn’t hurt them either. McGarity reeks of this nonchalant attitude. 15th in Directiors Cup when in reality only about 20 schools could win the damn thing. Big deal.

McG is the AD, he is reponsible for athletic revenues and oversees over a dozen sports, he isn’t the damn football coach, so stop trying to blame him for the on the field stuff. The first step is realizing where the problem is: it’s the coaching. Ask Saban or Sweeney.

“The irony of it all is McGarity was brought here seven years ago from Florida – where he served in a No. 2 role for 18 years – for the express purpose of seeing that Georgia closed the gap on the Gators. Instead it has only widened.”

What were we the best in the nation at this year? What were we really, really good at this year? If you want to sell me achievements in non-revenue sports, sell them to me, AD. What I see are programs that used to be among the best in the nation slipping. We’re still nasty at men’s golf. The softball team is good enough to make SEC play interesting and make it into a regional. What else?

And to answer the poster above, I’ll take Clemson’s #52 finish in the Director’s Cup with a football national title any day. Hell, I’ll take a #52 finish with an SEC Championship.

Question: Can you tell me who won the DIrector’s Cup this year without Googling it? Sub-question: can you find me anyone on that campus that bough a t-shirt to celebrate the accomplishment?
