About the Ole Miss opening

I’m sure you’ve seen at least some of the speculation surrounding who will ultimately be hired to replace Freeze for the long run — my heart is torn between Junior and SOD, if you must know — but there are two contradictory factors in play with regard to the search.

On the plus side, Freeze walks away without a buyout, so the school has a lot of money to throw around.  Ole Miss will likely need every penny of it, too, if they hope to find a quality hire.

There’s a big problem, though.  Last year’s recruiting class imploded and that’s almost certainly going to be the story for the program’s 2018 class.  Add to that the threat of extended sanctions imposed by the NCAA, and you’d think whoever may be coming in is going to want the security of a long-term deal to ride out the storm in the here and now.  Unfortunately,

Four years might get you a retread like Les Miles, who’s in his mid-60s and probably isn’t looking to coach for another decade, but it won’t get you a younger hot shot around whom you could rebuild the program after sanctions are lifted, even if you were willing to toss $5 million a year on the table.  Ole Miss seems to be in a tough spot, although you can see why it doesn’t hurt to let the interim coach take the hit on this year.

Not sure if I would want to hire Kiffin if I was the AD, but I could definitely see the argument as to why you would. Personally, I would love to see him at Ole Miss…..can see him driving Saban nuts now. The league needs this.

Mike Leach in the SEC? Love this idea

HA!!…that would be awesome, the Bobby Knight of CF. It would make Saban squirm even more. Somebody needs to replace Spurrier (young), thinks Leach would be more than adequate…..would be entertaining.

The program will be in shambles and need a few years just to get back to the Ole Miss pre-Freeze. A 4 year deal with Les Miles seems like a home run. He can come in and clean things up and is a good recruiter. After 4 he can retire.

Seems reasonable to me. As far as what the school might want. But is that what Les wants? I know money talks but I can’t see wanting to step into that dumpster fire underneath an obviously clueless administration.

Yeah, it depends on what Les wants to do with his time, but $20 million guaranteed would at the least get him to return the call.

Outside of Lester it’s Charlie Weis or something similar.

Ole Miss almost has to wait out the sanctions. With Sankey running the COI, there’s a decent chance the COI puts all of its bombs in Freeze’s basket, leaving Ole Miss with a token punishment. Yes, Snakey will have to recuse himself for this specific case, but he has the connections to exert a strong influence on the committee’s direction in this.

If the committee nukes the program, then Ole Miss has to find a babysitter for a couple of years. If they nuke Freeze, then they can be more aggressive.

I don’t know how Ole Miss escapes this while putting the blame on Freeze. After all, he’s the one they stood behind this entire time saying he’s done very little wrong while blaming former coach Houston Nutt. Now, Ole Miss’ only defense now is to say Freeze was upstanding on a professional level while immoral on personal level. Good luck getting anyone to buy that BS.

Agreed, but the NCAA’s case is directed primarily at Freeze as well. The NCAA Committee could reject Ole Miss’s defense of Freeze and show-cause him to eternity – and apply only marginal punishments to Ole Miss itself.

It’s easily within the realm of possibility.

Funny you should say that Senator. When this poop initially hit the fan I thought of SOD myself.

Something tells me the Solons in Jackson will figure out a way for the HC at Ole Miss to have a contract longer than 4 years.

I’m wondering if Bjork will still be around to hire a new coach. I haven’t read much on where he stands now with the Ole Piss crowd.

Man, if they’re tossing 5M/Year on a 4 year contract, pretty much anyone outside the establish top tier would likely be crawling over a mile of broken glass, naked, to take that job, sanctions be damned.

Even a Mike Bobo, making what, 1M a year(?) would get 5x his current salary for 4 years, guaranteed. His family is literally set for life on that one contract. And the expectations are pretty slim. If he beats the odds, then they throw more money at him. If not, he takes a year off and gets another job somewhere else.

The problem is the next job is likely QB coach or OC in the NFL. Failed head coaches rarely get the 2nd chance these days, ask the Stoops still at OU. Shula gets flamed by the Bammers but 10-2 under sanctions isn’t a bad job.

Bobo likely waits it out for a more stable job.

If I were the Ole Miss AD, I would call Boom and ask to interview Bryan McClendon. He’s early-thirties young, knows the SEC, is an excellent recruiter, and might very well see the potential upside in such a situation. And if I felt a sincere interest on his part, I would get Archie and Eli involved in the process (assuming they were good with the choice).

No Weis, no Miles, and darn sure no Kiffin.

I would hire a FCS coaches before Weis or Kiffin. Miles has been relatively clean from what I remember which might go over well with the NCAA. They could certainly do worse than Miles.

Jim Grobe is back in retirement….

Probably the best non-snarky post on the subject.

I might get flack for saying this, but I’d add Jeremy Pruitt to my list. Top recruiter and a heck of a coach. Added benefit of poaching saban’s top assistant.

Pruitt to Ole Miss would be hilarious on so many levels. Please let this happen. Just the thought makes me smile.

I wrote something similar to this Friday and I still believe it. The fact that UM did not look closely enough at Freeze’s records of use of a school issued cell phone when investigating the NCAA allegations to catch an escort service tells me that UM lacked institutional control

I’d look at Cutcliffe. Also Fish Fry….With the recruiting problems their about to have,Fish Fry could scarf up the players that would be good for his system. Players that the rest of the SEC ignore. We’ve seen it work at Ga.Southern against UGA and Bama..and on an SEC level it could be scary.
