Pro Football Focus takes a look at Nick Chubb’s 2016 season and discovers it wasn’t that bad.
- After having his 2015 season end prematurely due to three torn ligaments in his left knee, Chubb returned to play 433 snaps in 2016 and recorded an overall grade of 81.8, which is No. 5 among returning SEC running backs. Chubb’s average of 3.6 yards after contact per rushing attempt was also tops among all SEC backs with 200 plus carries.
- One thing that Chubb has been able to do throughout his collegiate career is make defenders miss. As a true freshman, Chubb had an elusive rating of 108.5 after forcing 69 missed tackles on 237 touches. Even this past year after returning from his knee surgery, Chubb forced 40 missed tackles but didn’t force them as efficiently as he’d done prior to the injury. [Emphasis added.]
Jeez. Just imagine what a fully healthy Chubb might be capable of this season. Then imagine it with a competent offensive line.
Get The Picture 
Not 100% healthy, lost a step, fear of injury, frustration, whatever the issue/s were, the guy did not pass the eye test in 2016. He was so unproductive at times that our coaches agreed to use the smallest player on our roster in a critical 4th and 1 spot last year. Call it what you want, but towards the second half of last season Chubb was not even the best RB on our squad. You can not tell me that a healthy Chubb would not have received that handoff in 2015. Will Chubb return to the back that we all remember from 2015? That’s yet to be determined, but we are all rooting like hell for the kid.

Apparently that wasn’t enough to discourage them from leaving Chubb on the field, presumably because they thought he would serve as a decoy.
Perhaps the problem wasn’t with Chubb’s health so much as a coaching staff that outsmarted itself.

The play call is debatable, and has been hashed out numerous times here, there, and everywhere. Given Chubb’s production that given day, or lack thereof to be more accurate, I do not, nor did I at the time, have an issue with giving the ball to another back. Yes, iMac may not have been the best option, but he was a better option than Chubb on that day. All of that being said, Chubb was not even close to being the back that we have seen in the past, or that we had hoped for.

Yes that is what killed that play. Chubb even glances him slows him another second IMAC converts and maybe gains more. The BL is that we should have NEVER been in that situation in the first place. Piss poor play calling all game.

And Sony Michel had 13 carries for a whopping 28 yards. Brian Herrien had 2 carries for 1 yard.
The problem wasn’t Chubb, even though he might not have been the Chubb of old, but it was the Georgia offensive line getting stoned at the LOS and pushed back by the Vandy defense. Todd Gurley and Herschel Walker would have had trouble getting 50 yards running behind that o-line that day.

Disagree. He wasn’t horrid and it had nothing to do with a lack of confidence in Chubb. It was the coaches overthinking the situation thinking that the quickness of IMAC would get the first. What killed the play was a key block being missed. You are off base with your comment on Chubb and well flat wrong.

Give Nick a break ! Not one of you Dawg lover’s would have been through with PT now that Nick went through in 8 months. If you all had been lucky enough to have made the team of a D1 school as a walk on and went through what Nick went through you would never step on the field again from your own fears.

It’s just Skeptic Dawg being a prick. He’s the worst. I think you’ll find most folks on here love Nick Chubb and want nothing but the best for him. Hell, I think he’s my favorite human being, much less Bulldog. And I think you’ll also find that the coaches had a brain fart against Vandy. Plain and simple. None of this bullshit about “Chubb not being good enough that day…blah blah blah…”. Ridiculous he is….

Nate, I am not sure why you think that I am being a prick with this one. Not once did I question Chubb’s heart, effort or character. Not even close. The kid had 16 carries vs Vandy and reeled off a paltry 40 yards. That’s good for 2.5 yards a carry. Say what you will, but the kid had a bad day due to any number of reasons, but still a bad day. Not sure that calling the sky blue equates to being a prick. Additionally, you must have missed the last sentence where I stated that, “…we are all rooting like hell for the kid”.

I remember Nick’s breakout game his freshman year against Mizzou. I believe he had about 140 yards on 30+ carries. But the startling stat from that game was on 2/3s of those carries he was hit at, or behind the LOS. Very impressive, freshman or not.
And NCDawg, I don’t know anyone on this blog who doesn’t admire and respect what Nick Chubb represents as a Dawg running back, or a human being. Seems unanimous that everyone has respect for he has done since hitting campus and how he worked to overcome his injury in 2015.

Had I been Nick Chubb’s advisor I would have told him like I would have told Todd Gurley, to not play. No reasonable person could expect a 20 year old to sacrifice his future for a college football team. I have become physically ill when seeing these kids injured in such a terrible manner. I even felt that way when the kid at USCe went down the last time. I only hope that the UGA has gotten it’s act together and insured both he and Sony for the maximum amount and not try to screw them like they did the kid a few years back who they conveniently forgot to take out a policy on. I have always been a rabid Dawg fan but as I get older it is just does not mean as much to me any more. It is still just a game played by 18-22 year olds and win or lose the sun will come up. I just pray for all of them to have a injury free year.

Nick Chubb, yet another in the long line of UGA players who’s awesome talent is being squandered by poor coaching. Barring injury, if this stud doesn’t get at least 1,500 yards running this year our coaches should be tarred & feathered!
